“There Was a Very Real Fear That We Would Not Make It Out”: Rep. Pramila Jayapal on Her Escape From the Capitol Riot
    https://static.theintercept.com/amp/deconstructed-jayapal-capitol-escape.html?__twitter_impression=true
When a mob attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6 in an attempt to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, found herself like many other lawmakers forced to flee the chamber and take cover. While Congress was locked down, several Republicans refused to wear masks. At least three Democratic lawmakers, Jayapal among them, later tested positive for Covid-19. Ryan Grim talks to the congresswoman about her ordeal and her hopeful recovery.

Tampa Bay singer used voice for screaming during Capitol riot
    https://www.tampabay.com/life-culture/2021/01/14/tampa-bay-singer-finds-her-voice-screaming-during-capitol-riot/
Audrey Ann Southard spent years helping kids find their creative voices and strengthening her own. The Spring Hill vocal coach and piano teacher sang like an angel when she posted videos of herself crooning Norah Jones’ Don’t Know Why or belting out Memory from Cats, and when she went to Sicily in 2012 for an international music competition, she won. That led to a showcase on a stage inside New York’s Carnegie Hall. More recently, Southard used her powerful soprano to scream at police officers that they should “tell f--king Pelosi we’re coming for her! F--king traitorous c--ts, we’re coming! We’re coming for all of you!” She was part of the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. And when one protester tells the crowd that the police might let them by if they agree to be peaceful and quiet, Southard, holding the wooden pole attached to an American flag flat against an officer’s torso, yells: “Bulls--t! They’re going to feel us!” “We’re pushing through. Boys, ready to go again?” she shouts back to the crowd, before yelling at an officer, “last breath or last bullet, what’s it going to be?”

The Problems of Racist Policing Compound When Using Credit Scores to Determine Insurance Rates
    https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2021/01/14/54674839/the-rule-that-permits-insurance-companies-to-judge-you-according-to-your-credit-rating-is-as-bad-as-racist-policing
this argument, of course, is just so much nonsense. As is the claim that race-neutrality is achieved when one is blind to race. What is for certain in all of this is that poverty in a capitalist context is made very (and artificially) expensive, and that the insurance policy/scam presently authorized by Washington State not only benefits from this general market law but also reinforces it.

A new watchdog report reveals just how obsessed Trump officials were with family separation
    https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/01/family-separation-new-report-trump-sessions-miller/
A years-long investigation by the Department of Justice’s Office of Inspector General found that then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his senior staff rushed forward a family separation that the government was completely unprepared to implement. The combination of intentional cruelty and unintentional incompetence detailed in the report combines to create a horrifying picture of the policy that defines the Trump administration. The OIG’s conclusion that DOJ was not ready to put in place its so-called “zero tolerance” policy has long been obvious. What makes the new report so damning is its hyper-detailed accounting of how things went wrong every step of the way. Parents spent as long as two months before talking to their kids after being separated because the government failed to create a system for keeping them in contact. Jails became dangerously overcrowded as they filled with separated parents sleeping in triple bunks. Sex offenders were released because US Marshals were overwhelmed by the policy. All the while, the Justice Department’s top leaders kept pressing for more separations.

Donald Trump Is The Loneliest Man In America (2019)
    https://www.huffpost.com/entry/president-trump-is-increasingly-isolated_n_5df3e703e4b047e8889d0c03
Of all the rinse-and-repeat stories of palace intrigue to come out of the Donald Trump administration, none is more stalwart than the president raging in an empty White House as he drives away all his former friends. “At a White House in crisis, Trump looks increasingly isolated”: so said Reuters in May 2017. August 2017 brought news that “President Trump Is More Isolated Than Ever.” A month after that, Trump was “The Loneliest President.” January 2018 came and a “Raging, isolated Trump retreats deeper into his bubble.” The cycle continues right up to present, as Democratic hopeful Joe Biden runs an ad saying the nation’s allies are “deeply worried” about Trump: “They say he’s becoming increasingly isolated.” A successful portrait of the president’s increasing isolation typically includes an overfondness for the word “increasingly”; a vague but grave warning that Trump — always erratic, to be sure! — is getting “worse”; and a mind-bending reliance on sources “close to Trump” to describe how he has no one close to him.
