In the Pipeline: Russian Vaccine Behavior
    https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2021/04/28/russian-vaccine-behavior
In the last post, I mentioned the Twitter response to the Brazilian rejection of the Gamaleya vaccine. I believe that the official blue-check-marked “Sputnik V” Twitter account is run by the Russian Direct Investment Fund, the sovereign-wealth part of the Russian state that is in charge of rolling out the vaccine to different countries. In that case, the Russian Sovereign Wealth Fund needs to clean up its act. I say that because of their aggressive political marketing. Here’s a tweet from earlier today, all about how countries that are “independent enough” to not only use “Western” vaccines but also the Russian and Chinese ones are doing better in the pandemic. But beyond this, they have also posted tweets about the safety record of their vaccine and others in Hungary, specifically claiming that the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has “32x the death rate” and “6x the infection rate” of their own vaccine. That follows up on a tweet claiming that data across several international health sources shows that there is a higher death rate after administration of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine as well. These claims are bullshit. Posting them is a disgrace.

Signal's Cellebrite Hack Is Already Causing Grief for the Law
    https://gizmodo.com/signals-cellebrite-hack-is-already-causing-grief-for-th-1846773797
A Maryland defense attorney has decided to challenge the conviction of one of his clients after it was recently discovered that the phone cracking product used in the case, produced by digital forensics firm Cellebrite, has severe cybersecurity flaws that could make it vulnerable to hacking. Ramon Rozas, who has practiced law for 25 years, told Gizmodo that he was compelled to pursue a new trial after reading a widely shared blog post written by Moxie Marlinspike, the CEO of encrypted chat app Signal. It was just about a week ago that Marlinspike brutally dunked on Cellebrite—writing, in a searing takedown, that the company’s products lacked basic “industry-standard exploit mitigation defenses,” and that security holes in its software could easily be exploited to manipulate data during cell phone extraction.

Bodycam video will not be released for now in Andrew Brown Jr. fatal shooting; family allowed to see more footage, judge rules
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2021/04/28/judge-consider-release-andrew-brown-shooting-bodycam-video-footage/4868725001/
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Body camera footage of sheriff's deputies fatally shooting a Black man won't immediately be released after a judge ruled Wednesday to allow at least a month for state authorities to complete an investigation into the shooting. Andrew Brown Jr.'s family will be allowed to view additional footage of his death, Judge Jeffery Foster ruled. He also would reconsider whether to release the videos in 30 to 45 days, after the State Bureau of Investigation completes its inquiry and a charging decision can be made. Brown was shot five times, including once in the back of his head, by deputies serving warrants at his home in Elizabeth City last week, an independent autopsy commissioned by his family and released Tuesday showed. His death caused a week of peaceful protests amid demands for accountability and transparency.

In Praise of Bitcoin | Epsilon Theory
    https://www.epsilontheory.com/in-praise-of-bitcoin/#.YImZLPrNroI.twitter
I’m old enough to remember when people bought and sold gold coins in private transactions. I guess we’d call that peer-to-peer today. I’m old enough to remember when well-meaning people would have earnest conversations about gold as a reserve currency, just like well-meaning people today have those earnest conversations about Bitcoin. I’m old enough to remember how quickly those conversations died out after State Street launched GLD in 2004 and took in a billion dollars in a few days. Turns out people didn’t really want the grumpy grandpa identity of owning physical gold in some Mad Max world as much as they wanted gold! TM in their financial portfolios as an abstracted insurance policy against central bank error. It’s exactly the same with Bitcoin! TM today.

The Writer of That Made-Up Kamala Harris Book Story Has Resigned From the New York Post
    https://theslot.jezebel.com/the-writer-of-that-made-up-kamala-harris-book-story-has-1846779096
Here’s a little update on the false story published by the New York Post that claimed the Biden administration was giving out copies of Vice President Kamala Harris’s book to migrant children held in federal shelters: the author of that story, Laura Italiano, has resigned, and claims she was “ordered to write” what she described as an “incorrect story.”

How fnnch’s Honey Bears Became the Most Despised Street Art in San Francisco
    https://www.kqed.org/arts/13896327/fnnch-honey-bears-street-art-san-francisco
In the past 12 months, San Francisco has become so oversaturated with fnnch’s honey bears that what was once an occasional sugar rush now feels like a nausea-inducing force-feeding. And I’m not alone: the backlash, brewing since last summer, finally reached its zenith this month. There’s a new (private) Instagram account, @fuckfnnch, that celebrates “pics or videos of dissed or ripped bears.” There’s a Change.org petition titled “Remove fnnch mural from SF LGBT Center.” And, notably, there are the local artists who’ve been confronting fnnch on walls, in person and online. One of the most visible and vocal is Ricky Rat, whose stories on Instagram often feature montages of honey bear destruction, parodies and badmouthing. “I don’t care where you’re from, but if you’re not doing something directly positive that reflects the real community, then I won’t support it,” Ricky told the Bold Italic last August. “[fnnch] didn’t invent gentrification, but he most publicly represents what it’s about.”

Minutes before Trump left office, millions of the Pentagon’s dormant IP addresses sprang to life
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/04/24/pentagon-internet-address-mystery/
Just moments before then president Trump left office, a Florida company claimed responsibility for 56 million IP addresses owned by the Pentagon. Three months later, it was managing nearly 175 million. While the world was distracted with President Donald Trump leaving office on Jan. 20, an obscure Florida company discreetly announced to the world’s computer networks a startling development: It now was managing a huge unused swath of the Internet that, for several decades, had been owned by the U.S. military. What happened next was stranger still. The company, Global Resource Systems LLC, kept adding to its zone of control. Soon it had claimed 56 million IP addresses owned by the Pentagon. Three months later, the total was nearly 175 million. That’s almost 6 percent of a coveted traditional section of Internet real estate — called IPv4 — where such large chunks are worth billions of dollars on the open market. The entities controlling the largest swaths of the Internet generally are telecommunications giants whose names are familiar: AT&T, China Telecom, Verizon. But now at the top of the list was Global Resource Systems — a company founded only in September that has no publicly reported federal contracts and no obvious public-facing website.

Pioneer League Trying Home Run Derby Instead of Extra Innings
    https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/04/mlb-experiment-knock-out-home-run-derby-extra-innings.html
The Pioneer Baseball League, one of several independent leagues designated this past offseason as an official “Partner League” of Major League Baseball, announced this morning that it will install a series of rule changes for the upcoming 2021 season. The PBL will test out the usage of designated pinch-hitters and pinch-runners, and on a larger scale, the use of a sudden-death “Knock Out” format to resolve games that end in nine-inning ties (i.e., a home run derby format supplanting the traditional extra-inning format).

This family built a massive dinosaur out of take-out containers during their hotel quarantine
    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bagasaurus-catalano-family-hotel-quarantine-1.5994056
The Catalano family has been making the most of their hotel quarantine — by building what they call a "bagasaurus." Carly Catalano, originally from Williams Lake, B.C., her partner Sam and their three-year-old daughter Florence are in the midst of moving to Perth, Australia. Part of the move to a new country requires them to quarantine in a hotel for 14 days, to ensure they don't bring COVID-19 into the country.  Florence's parents knew that 14 days with a toddler were going to be trying, so they came up with a plan. They wanted to build something. When they asked young Florence what she wanted them to make, she suggested a dinosaur.
