On the evening of Sunday, December 14 a patron of the Sea Cave Arcade and Bar in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans allegedly began covering a vintage arcade cabinet with stickers from a supermarket price gun. When arcade owner Judah Lea asked him to leave, the customer responded by asking if he was “interested in dying.” That was the beginning of a really fucked-up night at the Sea Cave. As reported by Nola.com, the customer, who goes by the name “The Wolf,” was a relatively new member of the Sea Cave who had already developed a reputation for being rude and making other patrons uncomfortable. After the initial confrontation, Lea refunded The Wolf’s membership fee and kicked him out. Out in the parking lot, The Wolf brandished a butterfly knife—the official knife of someone trying to look cool—and mentioned owning an assault rifle before leaving at around 7:30 p.m. A half-hour later he returned and allegedly locked the arcade’s front doors with a bicycle lock, trapping customers and employees inside. Then he started smashing windows, sending glass flying everywhere.

Before the pandemic stripped the world of millions of people, there were about 140 million orphaned children globally. Now, an additional 1.5 million kids have lost their parents, grandparents or other caregivers to COVID-19, a new study estimates. Of those children, nearly 114,000 are from the U.S., according to the paper published Tuesday in The Lancet. The U.S. ranks fourth with the most kids orphaned by COVID-19 deaths, behind Mexico, Brazil and India.

The court ruling marks the first major test of the new Marsy’s Law protections for crime victims — even when the victims are police officers. A state appeals court in Tallahassee this week ruled for the first time that the names of two police officers involved in two separate deadly shootings should not have their names released to the public. That’s because under Marsy’s Law, which voters passed as a ballot amendment in 2018, the officers are considered victims of crime — since they both say they were threatened with deadly force before the shootings.

In addition to being at a higher risk of cancer, residents near the port have some of the highest rates of asthma and related emergency-room visits in the state, making them particularly vulnerable when the air turns worse; for Golden, this means experiencing symptoms of persistent allergies and, on the worst days, nosebleeds. But during the pandemic, the public-health impacts of living adjacent to the port have become even more alarming. Golden points to a study by UCLA that broke down the neighborhood death rate for COVID-19, known to be exacerbated by exposure to particulate pollution. “In most communities in and around the port, it was 60 percent higher than the rest of Los Angeles County,” he says. “So who’s bearing the burden?”

Piker was banned after signing off from a December 13 stream where he discussed the word “cracker” following the banning of two of his moderators who used the word. “I’ve been called a cracker more times than every single one of you fucking pasty little cracker bitches in my chat, OK,” Piker said during the livestream. “Stop crying about this fucking term, OK? Recognize that the person who is calling you a fucking cracker is literally powerless…they’re doing it someone whose been historically oppressed blowing off steam.”

Last year, Julia King, a 20-year-old art student and influencer from Texas, noticed that a particular kind of sweater vest was taking over the internet. Celebrities like Bella Hadid had been photographed wearing shrunken argyle-patterned styles, channeling classic ’90s movies like Clueless during a wave of millennium-era nostalgia. They alerted her that an obscure, now-defunct Chinese shopping site called Preguy was using her photo to sell its own cheap reproduction of the thrifted vest. “Seeing the pictures of me up on some random fast-fashion website I’d never heard of before made me really upset,” King said.  Replicas of the vest soon began popping up on countless other clothing sites and e-commerce marketplaces, including Amazon, AliExpress, Walmart, and Shein. But at least four workers told NBC News that supervisors warned employees they would be fired if they left their shifts early. For hours, as word of the coming storm spread, up to 15 workers beseeched managers to allow them to take shelter at their own homes, only to have their requests rebuffed, the workers said. Fearing their safety, some in fact left during their shifts regardless of the repercussions.
