Biden administration exits talks over compensation for families separated at border
    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/biden-administration-exits-talks-over-compensation-families-separated-border-n1286163
NBC News previously reported that the administration had been in talks to offer separated migrant parents and children hundreds of thousands. The Biden administration walked away from negotiations to financially compensate families separated at the border by the Trump administration, three lawyers for the families told NBC News on Thursday. “There’s no explanation for not settling these cases other than the Biden administration is unwilling to use literally any political capital to help the young children deliberately abused by our government,” said Lee Gelernt, deputy director for the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project. Gelernt said that the Biden administration “will now be in court not just defending the United States but also the individual federal officials responsible for family separation.” These families had been separated at the border by the Trump administration.

Newly released records show it was ‘standard practice’ for BYU police to help with Honor Code surveillance
    https://www.sltrib.com/news/2021/12/16/newly-released-records/
A BYU police lieutenant's surveillance of students was part of a defacto system, newly released records show, with university employees in several departments asking for and welcoming his reports. Katie Wilson went to Provo police six years ago to report that a man had sexually assaulted her. She was a student at Brigham Young University, but she didn’t talk to the school’s police force because it had happened off campus. So when she recently learned that her case appeared in newly released emails from a BYU police lieutenant to other school officials, she gasped. Suddenly, Wilson said, her conversations with an associate dean made more sense. The emails don’t show what information the police lieutenant may have shared after he used a restricted database to access Wilson’s case file in Provo. But the associate dean, Sarah Westerberg, “knew a lot of details about my sexual assault that I hadn’t shared with them,” Wilson said. And Westerberg used that information, Wilson said, to confront her about whether she had broken the religious school’s rules.

Obituaries in Fayetteville, NC | Fayetteville Observer
    https://www.fayobserver.com/obituaries/m0028451
Renay Mandel Corren El Paso, TX—A plus-sized Jewish lady redneck died in El Paso on Saturday. Of itself hardly news, or good news if you're the type that subscribes to the notion that anybody not named you dying in El Paso, Texas is good news. In which case have I got news for you: the bawdy, fertile, redheaded matriarch of a sprawling Jewish-Mexican-Redneck American family has kicked it. This was not good news to Renay Mandel Corren's many surviving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom she even knew and, in her own way, loved. There will be much mourning in the many glamorous locales she went bankrupt in: McKeesport, PA, Renay's birthplace and where she first fell in love with ham, and atheism; Fayetteville and Kill Devil Hills, NC, where Renay's dreams, credit rating and marriage are all buried; and of course Miami, FL, where Renay's parents, uncles, aunts, and eternal hopes of all Miami Dolphins fans everywhere, are all buried pretty deep. Renay was preceded in death by Don Shula.

A deep dive into an NSO zero-click iMessage exploit: Remote Code Execution
    https://googleprojectzero.blogspot.com/2021/12/a-deep-dive-into-nso-zero-click.html
Earlier this year, Citizen Lab managed to capture an NSO iMessage-based zero-click exploit being used to target a Saudi activist. In this two-part blog post series we will describe for the first time how an in-the-wild zero-click iMessage exploit works. Based on our research and findings, we assess this to be one of the most technically sophisticated exploits we've ever seen, further demonstrating that the capabilities NSO provides rival those previously thought to be accessible to only a handful of nation states... JBIG2 doesn't have scripting capabilities, but when combined with a vulnerability, it does have the ability to emulate circuits of arbitrary logic gates operating on arbitrary memory. So why not just use that to build your own computer architecture and script that!? That's exactly what this exploit does. Using over 70,000 segment commands defining logical bit operations, they define a small computer architecture with features such as registers and a full 64-bit adder and comparator which they use to search memory and perform arithmetic operations. It's not as fast as Javascript, but it's fundamentally computationally equivalent.

"Doomsday" glacier's last-remaining ice shelf could collapse within 5 years, and scientists warn it could rapidly raise sea levels
    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/thwaites-glacier-doomsday-antarctica-collapse-within-5-years/
Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier, commonly referred to as the "doomsday glacier," is so massive that it has the power to raise sea levels by several feet if it melts. Now, scientists are warning that its only remaining ice shelf — a brace that helps prevent the glacier's total collapse — may only last a few more years. The glacier is about 74,000-square-miles — roughly the size of Florida — and is one of the largest and fastest-melting glaciers in Antarctica, researchers told reporters at a press conference on Monday. The Thwaites Eastern Ice Shelf, the area of concern, makes up one-third of the glacier.  That shelf, researcher Erin Pettit told reporters, is currently "acting like a dam" for the rest of the glacier. But warm water has seeped under the glacier, causing it to melt, and the ice shelf is appearing to "lose its grip" on an underwater seamount that keeps it stable.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton tried to overturn the election. Now he’s going after Roe.
    https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/12/texas-attorney-general-ken-paxton-tried-to-overturn-the-election-now-hes-going-after-roe/?utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=naytev&utm_medium=social
It was hardly the keynote slot—before Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle, before Eric and Lara Trump, before Rudy Giuliani calling for “trial by combat,” before John Eastman, dressed for some reason like Indiana Jones, and long before President Donald Trump, who would speak for more than an hour and incite an insurrection against Congress. But Ken Paxton didn’t mind being an afterthought when he took the stage at the “Save America” rally in Washington on the morning of January 6. The Republican attorney general of Texas was happy just to be there at all. The 58-year-old Paxton wore a thick tartan scarf with a long black coat and no gloves, and his gray hair, stubbornly parted for decades, drifted haphazardly across his forehead in the stiff January wind. When he was 12, Paxton nearly lost his right eye in a freak accident during a game of hide-and-seek. It left permanent damage—it’s a different color from his left one, and the lid above it is half-closed. The effect is that whether he is posing for a mugshot or addressing a large group of people preparing to hang Mike Pence, Paxton’s face appears fixed in a mischievous half-smirk. But as he stood on the podium that morning, Paxton had good reason to smile. One month earlier, beset by a damning series of allegations from his own staffers of personal and professional wrongdoing, Paxton’s career seemed to be free-falling. Then he found a parachute. Rejecting centuries of constitutional law and democratic traditions, Paxton filed a lawsuit arguing that Pennsylvania and three other states won by Joe Biden had harmed Texas by expanding mail- and early-voting access during the pandemic. He asked the Supreme Court to strip those states of their Biden electors and instruct their legislatures to replace them with new ones, effectively making Trump the victor of the 2020 election. Paxton’s gambit was one level removed, legally speaking, from one of those ransom notes they send in movies with all the letters cut out from magazine headlines. His brief miscalculated the number of electoral votes at play and, citing the calculations of one random man in Berkeley, falsely asserted that “the statistical improbability of Mr. Biden winning the popular vote in these four States collectively is 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000.” But that did not stop many of the gop’s most prominent figures from endorsing it. A majority of the House Republican conference signed their names to an amicus brief. So did 17 other Republican state attorneys general. Trump truly believed it could work, and Sen. Ted Cruz promised to argue the case before the Supreme Court.

‘We had no one to run it’: At one Oakland school, a 5-year quest to reopen the library
    https://oaklandside.org/2021/12/15/oakland-unified-school-libraries-carl-b-munck-elementary/
Five years ago, Denise Burroughs made it her goal as school principal to refurbish and reopen the library at Carl. B. Munck Elementary. Longtime volunteers there had retired from their posts, leaving the library closed or, at best, occasionally used when a substitute teacher or other volunteer had spare time. Now, Burroughs can finally say she accomplished her aim. The library opened its doors in September and welcomed students to a freshly updated collection of books and new furniture, including a cozy curved sofa, inviting students to develop their love of reading. Burroughs also hired a library technician who curates the collection and works with teachers to support their lesson plans with appropriate books.  It’s the first time in Burrough’s 16 years as principal at Carl B. Munck that the school has had such a position.
