Gender-critical outlet Lesbian and Gay News shuts down due to lack of support and advertising
    https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2022/03/28/lesbian-gay-news-shut-down-david-bridle/
Gender-critical news outlet Lesbian and Gay News has been shut down with its management team seemingly blaming the LGB Alliance and trans people for its downfall. The so-called Lesbian and Gay News was set up in February 2021 by Boyz magazine owner David Bridle after he was widely condemned for his support of LGB Alliance, widely considered to be an anti-trans pressure group. The website’s “about” page says it was set up to “reflect the lives, politics and culture of same-sex attraction and to report major debates around sex and gender”. In its one year in operation, Lesbian and Gay News focused almost entirely on trans rights. In a post published on Sunday (27 March), the website’s management team confirmed that it is no longer in operation. The team said it is proud of its “important and signifiant contribution to the GC [gender critical] movement at a critical point”, but went on to say “cancel-culture activism” from “gender ideology hate groups and activists” had stopped it from getting advertising revenue.

St. Louis beer heiress joins race for U.S. Senate
    https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/st-louis-beer-heiress-joining-race-for-u-s-senate/article_7094dfc5-978e-5fb1-bddb-9ae514516c79.html
St. Louis beer heiress Trudy Busch Valentine joined the heated race for Missouri’s U.S. Senate seat Monday. The move triggered former state Sen. Scott Sifton, who had represented south St. Louis County in the Legislature’s upper chamber until 2020, to exit the race and throw his support to the wealthy Clayton resident. Valentine is expected to make a formal announcement Tuesday about her plans to seek the office as a Democrat. Valentine is the daughter of the late Anheuser-Busch beer baron August “Gussie” Busch Jr., who died in 1989. Her mother, Gertrude “Trudy” Busch, was Busch’s third wife. She has been a major fundraiser for Democratic candidates. In 2016, she held a fundraiser at Grant’s Farm, the historic homestead of the Busch family, for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The 2016 event was organized by Joyce Aboussie, a longtime Democratic operative. In addition to Sifton, guests included former U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, former Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster, and former St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay. In addition to contributing more than $37,000 to campaign accounts supporting Clinton, federal campaign records show Valentine has written checks to U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Illinois Democrat. With filing to close Tuesday, there are at least 10 Democrats running for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Roy Blunt, including Jefferson City native Lucas Kunce.

How Elden Ring's Silliest Memes Get Lost in Translation - IGN
    https://www.ign.com/articles/elden-ring-messages-memes-translation-fort-night
Bretwulfo kept stumbling across a message that will be familiar to anyone who’s played Elden Ring: “Try finger, but hole.” At this point, many players would probably roll their eyes at finding yet another use of the game’s messaging system to graffiti crude humour across FromSoft’s incredible fantasy world. The problem was that Bretwulfo is Brazilian, and plays the game in Portuguese – that oft-seen message simply does not translate the same way. “I was always plunging into holes thinking there was going to be something in it,” Bretwulfo says. “I only got what it was supposed to mean after someone placed it on the ass of a corpse.” For players who don’t speak English as their first language, Elden Ring’s many meme-messages can be far more of a troll than they were ever intended to be – and English-speaking players may well be getting just as confused by some international equivalents.

SS Central America: Haunting photos recovered the 'ship of gold' wreck on ocean floor
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-60866212
They went down with an estimated 21 tonnes of gold coins and nuggets from prospectors who had struck it rich on the west coast, but some passengers were also carrying something of more personal value - photographs. Salvaged from the ship's wreckage in 2014 were daguerreotypes, the first successful commercial form of photography - a one-off picture held on a metal plate - and ambrotypes, a type of glass plate photography.

Ukraine is Using Drone Video to Win the Information War
    https://faineg.substack.com/p/ukraine-is-using-drone-video-to-win
Ukraine is an exceedingly tech-savvy country. As @mekkaokereke pointed out on Twitter, in reference to that ill-conceived and insecure refugee housing website a couple Harvard kids put together recently with far too much fanfare: In 2013 and 2014, the DIY drone hobby scene that I was part of in the San Francisco Bay Area was expanding globally at a rapid clip. By the time Putin invaded, Ukraine was already home to people who knew damn well how to turn an assemblage of electronic bits ordered from eBay into a functional drone. It was also home to a well-known aeronautics industry. And yet, at the time, the Ukrainian army didn’t have any modern UAVs at all. They caught up quickly, as many excellent news stories from that time period between now and then reported. Hobbyists joined forces with the military to figure out how to build better drones. Ukrainians also made use of cheap commercial platforms that they could simply purchase and then modify as they saw fit, especially those made by China’s DJI company. Crucially, they figured out how to better convey drone-collected data to the Ukrainian General Staff so that they could make decisions with it (an utterly essential step that far too many drone-using organizations ignore).

An ice shelf the size of New York City has collapsed in East Antarctica, an area long thought to be stable and not hit much by climate change, concerned scientists said Friday. The collapse, captured by satellite images, marked the first time in human history that the frigid region had an ice shelf collapse.
