Facebook paid GOP firm to malign TikTok
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/03/30/facebook-tiktok-targeted-victory/
Targeted Victory pushed local operatives across the country to boost messages calling TikTok a threat to American children. “Dream would be to get stories with headlines like ‘From dances to danger,'" one campaign director said. Campaign operatives were also encouraged to use TikTok’s prominence as a way to deflect from Meta’s own privacy and antitrust concerns. “Bonus point if we can fit this into a broader message that the current bills/proposals aren’t where [state attorneys general] or members of Congress should be focused,” a Targeted Victory staffer wrote. One trend Targeted Victory sought to enhance through its work was the “devious licks'' challenge, which showed students vandalizing school property. Through the “Bad TikTok Clips” document, the firm pushed stories about the “devious licks” challenge in local media across Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C. That trend led Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) to write a letter in September calling on TikTok executives to testify in front of a Senate subcommittee, saying the app had been “repeatedly misused and abused to promote behavior and actions that encourage harmful and destructive acts.” But according to an investigation by Anna Foley at the podcast network Gimlet, rumors of the “devious licks” challenge initially spread on Facebook, not TikTok. In October, Targeted Victory worked to spread rumors of the “Slap a Teacher TikTok challenge” in local news, touting a local news report on the alleged challenge in Hawaii. In reality, no such challenge existed on TikTok. Again, the rumor started on Facebook, according to a series of Facebook posts first documented by Insider.

Andrew Giuliani Calls His 4-Month-Old Daughter a 'Woman'
    https://jezebel.com/andrew-giuliani-calls-his-4-month-old-daughter-a-woman-1848722770
Andrew Giuliani—failed professional golfer and Republican candidate for New York governor—managed to make both transphobic and deeply disgusting comments about his four-month-old daughter while on the campaign trail in Long Island. At a far-right group’s rally on Sunday, Giuliani said he’s checked his daughter’s genitals, thereby guaranteeing the baby’s assigned sex at birth would never change. “So I have changed the diapers. I have looked under the hood. She’s a woman,” he told the crowd, according to the Daily Beast. “I’m gonna be the last guy in a long time that looks under the hood right there. But guess what? She was born a woman and she’s gonna stay a woman, it’s that simple.”

FTC Sues to Stop “Deceptive” TurboTax “Free” Ad Campaign
    https://www.propublica.org/article/ftc-sues-to-stop-deceptive-turbotax-free-ad-campaign
With millions of Americans scrambling to file their taxes in the next few weeks, the Federal Trade Commission asked a federal court late Monday to intervene to stop Intuit from claiming in ads that Americans can file for “free” using the company’s TurboTax software. The FTC began investigating TurboTax in 2019 in response to ProPublica stories describing how users had been lured into using the software with promises of free filing, only to discover later they had to pay fees to finish the process. The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, where Intuit is based, accuses the company of engaging in deceptive marketing for years. It points, for example, to recent TV ads in which almost every word spoken is “free,” quoting from one featuring an auctioneer who says: “And free, and free, and free, and free, and free. Now a bidder and free! Now give me another bidder and free, and a free here and a free free free a free free free.”

The Story Of Aubrion Rogers, The Woman Who Died From Endometriosis Complications
    https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2022/03/10904991/endometriosis-death-aubrion-rogers
"I have been in pain daily for months. Today I went to urgent care and asked for an ultrasound. Found out that I have three fibroids, one cyst, one enlarged ovary and one large mass that is 11cm. At what point will my situation be considered an emergency?" That’s what endometriosis campaigner Aubrion Rogers wrote on Instagram last year after her endometriosis had gone dismissed and untreated by the doctors she had approached and asked for help. Rogers, 30, finally convinced doctors in January that her condition was serious and they agreed to operate. She had been suffering with endometriosis at least since her diagnosis in 2020 – and given what we know about extreme diagnosis delays for the condition, probably much longer. On 22nd January 2022 Rogers died in surgery from complications that arose when doctors were trying to remove her endometriosis. According to a Facebook post written by her husband, she was rushed into surgery after her right ovary burst. During surgery, doctors attempted to remove the ovary as well as her right fallopian tube, her appendix, endometriomas and endometriosis. She suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away while attempting to recover from the procedure.

Crypto Gaming's Biggest Success Story Scammed Out Of $600 Million
    https://kotaku.com/crypto-axie-infinity-scam-exploit-blockchain-ethereum-n-1848721147
Pokémon-style NFT battler Axie Infinity was one of the biggest “success” stories in the world of crypto gaming. Now it’s responsible for one of the biggest thefts in the history of the technology. The gaming-focused blockchain Ronin Network announced earlier today that an Axie Infinity exploit allowed a hacker to “drain” roughly $600 million worth of crypto currency from the network. “There has been a security breach on the Ronin Network,” the company announced on its Substack. “Earlier today, we discovered that on March 23rd, Sky Mavis’s Ronin validator nodes and Axie DAO validator nodes were compromised resulting in 173,600 Ethereum and 25.5M USDC drained from the Ronin bridge in two transactions.” The person responsible allegedly used hacked private keys to order the fraudulent withdrawals. How, you ask? According to Ronin, “the attacker found a backdoor through our gas-free RPC node, which they abused to get the signature for the Axie DAO validator.”
