Silicon Valley Bank: An ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ bank run for the digital age
    https://www.fastcompany.com/90864395/silicon-valley-bank-an-its-a-wonderful-life-bank-run-for-the-digital-age
The seizure of Silicon Valley Bank by regulators Friday morning shows how brittle financial institutions can be in the digital age. The downfall of the Valley institution, which has been called “the backbone of the startup economy,” was caused by a good old-fashioned bank run, but one that ran at internet speed. The run began on Thursday, after a powerful Silicon Valley VC—Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund—had begun advising its portfolio companies to withdraw their money from SVB, sources told Fast Company. Other VCs soon caught wind of the advisory and began advising their own portfolio companies to withdraw funds from SVB, the people said. As the withdrawals accelerated, the bank began taking steps to stem the tide and preserve its solvency—just like George Bailey did in the 1946 classic It’s a Wonderful Life.

Trump Blurts Out ‘Peace’ Plan to Hand Russia Chunks of Ukraine
    https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/03/trump-blurts-out-peace-plan-hand-russia-chunks-of-ukraine.html
As Justin Baragona, the Daily Beast media reporter who reported on this interview, points out, Hannity played portions of his Trump interview on his Fox News show that night, but stops the remarks where Trump says he “could have negotiated” to omit the extremely newsworthy detail where Trump says exactly what the “negotiation” would have entailed.

The right-wing commentator’s columns, which were unedited and bankrolled by a single donor, will be shuttered Friday after a 12-year run. Sources say it was ultimately a diatribe on circumcision that was a bridge too far.

'I snapped' | Hero day care owner says she shot her ex-cop husband accused of child molestation in a moment of rage
    https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/local/dc/shanteari-weems-daycare-owner-shot-husband-child-abuse-allegations-says-she-snapped-jail-interview/65-40188efe-5cd5-4e47-bf2b-afdb9d541c92
In an exclusive interview from jail, Shanteari Weems says she shot her husband in the neck and thigh after a parent she trusted said he abused her kid... Six-and-a-half months later, a D.C. judge told Shanteari Weems she had no right to take the law into her own hands. Her supporters were stunned when Superior Court Judge Michael O'Keefe slapped her with a four-year sentence, twice what prosecutors recommended in a plea deal on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a pistol without a license. Prosecutors have charged James Weems, a retired police officer, with 33 counts of rape and child sex crimes. He’s awaiting trial, and his lawyer, Thomas Plavanic, is declining to comment to reporters. During sentencing, Judge O'Keefe said Shanteari Weems' attack on her husband was premeditated, not spontaneous. Asst. U.S. Attorney La Vater Massie-Banks said police had told her days earlier that they were investigating her husband, and they’d shut down the day care, Lil Kidz Kastle, while they looked into the allegations of child sexual abuse. But Shanteari Weems says police were very vague about the allegations and who was under investigation.

Some Ancient 'Human' Tools May Be the Work of Monkeys
    https://gizmodo.com/macaques-make-stone-flakes-that-look-like-human-tools-1850212505
The long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) rely on limestone tools to crack oil palm nuts; they use hammerstones and anvils, very much like those used by humankind. As they crack hard nuts, bits of the stones break off, resulting in an assemblage of stone flakes.

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/03/customers-fume-as-hp-blocks-third-party-ink-from-more-of-its-printers/
HP customers are showing frustration online as the vendor continues to use firmware updates to discourage or, as users report, outright block the use of non-HP-brand ink cartridges in HP printers. HP has already faced class-action lawsuits and bad publicity from "dynamic security," but that hasn't stopped the company from expanding the practice.

Mental-health crisis from Covid pandemic was minimal - study
    https://www.bbc.com/news/health-64890952
People's general mental health and anxiety symptoms hardly deteriorated at all during the pandemic, research suggests. Most people are resilient and made the best of a difficult situation, it says... The review did not focus on lower-income countries, or children, young people and those with existing problems, the groups most likely affected, experts say, and risks hiding important effects among disadvantaged groups.

One of the main concerns is that this same group of researchers published claims of a similar superconductor breakthrough at room temperature, back in 2020. This claim was later retracted by Nature due to issues with reproducibility and questions over the data.
