Silicon Valley Bank was also deeply entangled in the personal finances of high net worth tech executives. It offered low-interest loans to investors and start-up founders who banked with it, so they were able to secure such loans — which traditional banks declined — for multimillion dollar homes, said three people who banked with Silicon Valley Bank.
Austin Petersmith, an investor and vice president of growth at Vendr, a software subscription company, tweeted his thanks last week to Silicon Valley Bank for giving him a mortgage for his home.
“Without SVB, my family literally wouldn’t be sitting in this home today,” he wrote, adding that 15 banks and lenders had rejected him for a mortgage while Silicon Valley Bank “approved us in less than a week.” He did not respond to a request for comment.
One start-up founder, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not comfortable revealing his personal finances, said Silicon Valley Bank gave him a $4 million loan for his San Francisco home with an interest rate of 2.2 percent, while other banks were offering rates of 3 percent and higher.
Silicon Valley Bank referred requests for comment to the F.D.I.C., which declined to comment.

Alabama is determined to keep Charles McCrory in prison even though the evidence against him has fallen apart.
Although a famed bite-mark analyst insisted at trial that the mark conclusively linked McCrory to the murder, that same expert has since recanted, saying he would never deliver such testimony today. In the years since McCrory was convicted, bite-mark analysis has been roundly discredited as junk science. Nevertheless, the judge who presided over the evidentiary hearing was unmoved. He ruled against McCrory, keeping him locked up. McCrory is the last known defendant still imprisoned for a conviction almost entirely based on the faulty forensic practice.

Athabasca Fort Chipewyan First Nation’s (ACFN) Chief Allen Adam says all work at the Kearle tarsands mine must stop until a full investigation is held into the ongoing tailings pond leaks.
“I am very dismayed over the failure of Imperial [Oil] and the Alberta regulator to inform us of the ongoing and uncontained leaks from the tailings facilities at the Kearle lake project,” said Adam at a news conference Thursday.
“The news that these leaks have been ongoing for nine months has caused great anxiety amongst our people.”
The nation has a population of 1,200 registered members and about 290 members living on-reserve.
Adam is also criticizing the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and Imperial Oil for their slow response. Adam said his nation was not aware of the problem under a tailings pond over flow.
Imperial Oil’s Kearle oilsands facility has been leaking wastewater from toxic tailings ponds for almost a year.
The AER’s monitoring has shown that dangerous levels of chemicals including arsenic, hydrocarbons, and sulphides have been leaking into the nearby groundwater at Kearle oilsand mine.

The sculptor likes to call his studio part of his art practice. Working there could often be scary.
Sachs has said the studio culture he created is “his greatest work of art.” But based on interviews with more than a dozen former employees, many of whom knew they were signing up for an unusual work environment, their experiences in the studio could be characterized as destabilizing and scary. Sachs declined to be interviewed for this story, and in a statement to New York, a spokesperson describes the place as a “rigorous and exacting artist’s studio” that “has fostered high standards and a fast-paced work environment to support a robust output.” Not everyone, they concede, is a fit for this culture. But “Tom Sachs Studio believes all employees should feel safe and secure in the workplace and is committed to upholding these values.” Here’s how one of Sachs’s former studio managers describes working for him: “It’s almost as if he goes out of his way to sow discomfort and pawns it off as if he’s a genius. It’s like a ruse. So many people out there know that he’s cruel, but the art world is tiny and no one gives a shit.”

Funeral services were held Sunday for a driver shot by police earlier this month after he refused to exit his vehicle, espoused sovereign citizen rhetoric and seemingly reached for a weapon during a traffic stop.
Driver Chase Allan can be seen arguing with Farmington, Utah, police over the false license plate fixed to the back of the vehicle. In recently released dash cam footage, Allan claimed he doesn’t need a drivers license or vehicle registration.
