Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee — tech exec's alleged killer also worked in tech
    https://missionlocal.org/2023/04/bob-lee-killing-arrest-made-san-francisco/
Mission Local is informed that the San Francisco Police Department early this morning made an arrest in the April 4 killing of tech executive Bob Lee, following an operation undertaken outside the city’s borders. The alleged killer also works in tech and is a man Lee purportedly knew. We are told that police today were dispatched to Emeryville with a warrant to arrest a man named Nima Momeni. The name and Emeryville address SFPD officers traveled to correspond with this man, the owner of a company called Expand IT. Multiple police sources have described the predawn knifing last week, which left the 43-year-old Lee dead in a deserted section of downtown San Francisco, as neither a robbery attempt nor a random attack. Nevertheless, some of Lee’s fellow tech luminaries and a chorus of other influential voices portrayed this killing as part and parcel of a city awash in violent crime and on a descent into further chaos. While Lee is one of a dozen homicide victims in San Francisco this year, his is the only killing that has garnered national coverage — or, in most cases, even cursory local coverage.

After calls to resign, Feinstein seeks Judiciary replacement
    https://apnews.com/article/dianne-feinstein-senate-resignation-khanna-california-e50d4f459445b0773fbc5f0d58cd022f
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Recuperating U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California asked Wednesday to be temporarily replaced on the Judiciary Committee, shortly after two House Democrats called on her to resign after her extended absence from Washington. In a statement, the long-serving Democratic senator said her recovery from a case of shingles she disclosed in early March had been delayed because of complications. She provided no date for her return to the Senate and said she had asked Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to ask the Senate to allow another Democratic senator to serve in her committee seat until she was able to return. “I intend to return as soon as possible once my medical team advises that it’s safe for me to travel,” Feinstein said. “In the meantime, I remain committed to the job and will continue to work from home in San Francisco.” Feinstein’s decision to seek a committee stand-in during her recovery comes amid increasing anxiety within her party that her lengthy absence has damaged Democratic efforts to confirm President Joe Biden’s nominees for federal courts in a narrowly divided chamber.

GOP Lawmaker Defends Supporting 12-Year-Olds’ Right To Legally Marry
    https://news.yahoo.com/gop-lawmaker-defends-supporting-12-234116361.html
A Missouri state senator apparently wants to block gender-affirming care for transgender youth but is OK with 12-year-olds getting married. Republican lawmaker Mike Moon is going viral for comments he made Tuesday while arguing for a bill he introduced to ban gender-affirming care for the state’s transgender teens. When pressed by state Rep. Peter Meredith (D) about a different bill Moon voted against in the past, which would make it illegal for adults to marry children, the GOP lawmaker doubled down on his support for underage marriage. “Do you know any kids who have been married at age 12? I do. And guess what? They’re still married,” Moon responded, according to the Springfield News-Leader.

The man who walked around the world: Tom Turcich on his seven-year search for the meaning of life
    https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/apr/11/the-man-who-walked-around-the-world-tom-turcich-seven-year-search-meaning-of-life
He started to make plans. He didn’t want to just see a bit of the world: if possible, he was going to see all of it. “Because the world is complex and vast, and because my general temperament is pretty timid and more towards the shy side, I wanted to be forced into adventure. The point of adventure is it’s uncomfortable and you have to grow in it.

Leaker of U.S. secret documents worked on military base, friend says
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/04/12/discord-leaked-documents/
In interviews with a member of the Discord group where intelligence documents were shared, The Washington Post learned details of the alleged leaker, “OG.” OG told the group he toiled for hours writing up the classified documents to share with his companions in the Discord server he controlled. The gathering spot had been a pandemic refuge, particularly for teen gamers locked in their houses and cut off from their real-world friends. The members swapped memes, offensive jokes and idle chitchat. They watched movies together, joked around and prayed. But OG also lectured them about world affairs and secretive government operations. He wanted to “keep us in the loop,” the member said, and seemed to think that his insider knowledge would offer the others protection from the troubled world around them. Late last year, a peeved OG fired off a message to all the members of the server. He had spent nearly an hour every day writing up “these long and drawn-out posts in which he’d often add annotations and explanations for stuff that we normal citizens would not understand,” the member said. His would-be pupils were more interested in YouTube videos about battle gear. “He got upset, and he said on multiple occasions, if you guys aren’t going to interact with them, I’m going to stop sending them.” That’s when OG changed tactics. Rather than spend his time copying documents by keyboard, he took photographs of the genuine articles and dropped them in the server. These were more vivid and arresting documents than the plain text renderings. Some featured detailed charts of battlefield conditions in Ukraine and highly classified satellite images of the aftermath of Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian electrical facilities. Others sketched the potential trajectory of North Korean ballistic nuclear missiles that could reach the United States. Another featured photographs of the Chinese spy balloon that floated across the country in February, snapped from eye-level, probably by a U-2 spy plane, along with a diagram of the balloon and the surveillance technology attached to it.

I was addicted to fentanyl. Here's what we should be doing about it.
    https://www.sfgate.com/politics-op-eds/article/how-to-stop-fentanyl-addiction-17884743.php
At times, the conversation about policy surrounding addiction loses its essential humane tenor. In lieu of statistics and abstract policy, it’s important to remember that we deal in human currency. The life I lived in active addiction was not pretty; it wasn’t a dignified existence. Nonetheless, and by the skin of my teeth, I made it out the other side. I am writing this op-ed to defend harm reduction policy. As someone whose life was undoubtedly saved by these policies, I feel I am especially apt to address the critiques this approach has faced of late. In December, the Tenderloin Center, an unofficial safe injection site in San Francisco, closed its doors, and overdoses have increased in the months since. For critics who claim there’s no direct correlation, one can at the very least note that January 2023 — the first full month since the closure of the Tenderloin Center — saw the most overdose deaths of any month since January 2020, which is when data first became available. The National Institutes of Health concluded in a study that “[safe consumption sites] are associated with lower overdose mortality,” and “67% fewer ambulance calls for treating overdoses.” Though I write this with the intention of providing a humane perspective into this issue, it can’t be understated that statistical evidence supports the benefits of these policies: A 2014 review of supervised injection services demonstrated that these sites fulfill their objectives — in that they reduce overdoses and increase access to life-saving health services — and they do so all without increasing drug use or drug trafficking.

Arizona House Rep. Liz Harris expelled for violating ethics rules
    https://www.azfamily.com/2023/04/12/arizona-house-rep-liz-harris-expelled-violating-ethics-rules/
All five ethics committee members made it clear in the report that what happened under Harris’ watch was unacceptable. Just before noontime, the House voted 46-13 in favor of expulsion. The House Ethics Committee released a report on Wednesday saying Harris broke ethics rules when she invited a conspiracy theorist to make outlandish claims at a February joint committee hearing. Representative Harris’ guest Jacqueline Breger alleged that high-profile politicians, including Governor Katie Hobbs and House Speaker Ben Toma, took bribes from a Mexican drug cartel. All five ethics committee members made it clear in the report that what happened under Harris’ watch was unacceptable. “I could have guessed it would go this way,” Representative Stephanie Stahl Hamilton (D-District 21) said. “But you just never know.” When Stahl Hamilton filed an ethics complaint against Rep. Harris on March 6, she did so because she thought Harris’ actions posed a threat to Arizona’s democracy. “Guests who came in and immediately impugned leadership,” she said. “Sitting judges, our governor, our secretary of state, the speaker of the House, and the entire Church of the Latter Day Saints. Those are not allegations you take lightly.”

Two road raging dads shot each other's children, only one is charged
    https://www.firstcoastnews.com/article/news/local/road-raging-dads-shot-each-others-children-only-one-is-charged/77-1271f190-823f-4181-af0f-efe2a4b13281
The man who fired first in an October road rage incident in which two children were shot will not be criminally charged. The man who returned fire, however, has been charged with seven counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault and shooting or throwing deadly missiles. According to prosecutors, 44-year-old Frank Allison's first shot was a justifiable use of force, because 36-year-old William Hale was the primary aggressor. They say Hale tried to run Allison off the road on U.S. 1 near Callahan and threw a water bottle at his car. Allison responded by firing a single shot at Hale’s vehicle, striking Hale's 5-year-old daughter in the upper calf. Hale returned fire, emptying his Glock 43 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun into Allison’s vehicle, hitting Allison’s 14-year-old daughter in the back. She suffered a collapsed lung.

Florida Republican Compares Trans People to “X-Men," Calling Them “Mutants” and “Demons”
    https://www.them.us/story/webster-barnaby-trans-people-x-men-mutants-demons
A Florida Republican compared transgender people to X-Men mutants while debating yet another bill that threatens trans rights. During an April 11 hearing on the Safety in Private Spaces Act, a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for minors and criminalize trans people using public bathrooms that align with their gender, State Rep. Webster Barnaby went on a bizarre rant. “I’m looking at society today, and it’s like I’m watching an X-Men movie,” he said. “It’s like we have mutants living among us on planet Earth.”
