A federal appeals judge in Washington, D.C. is under investigation by her own court for allegedly failing to carry out her duties and refusing to respond to other judges' concerns, court officials at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said on Friday.
An order signed by Federal Circuit Chief Judge Kimberly Moore said a three-judge committee had determined that Judge Pauline Newman, who is 95, may "suffer a disability that interferes with her ability to perform the responsibilities of her office."
Newman is also under investigation for misconduct for refusing to cooperate with the probe or submit to a medical evaluation, Moore said in the order, dated Thursday.

Cryptocurrency Twitter prematurely rejoiced at the possibility that the statements of an FTX lawyer at its bankruptcy hearing meant that the company had recovered nearly all of its funds and was close to restarting. Neither is true.
FTX shared at the hearing that it has recovered a total of $7.3 billion in cash and liquid crypto assets. This includes $2 billion in cash, and $4.3 billion in ‘liquid’ cryptocurrencies. To be clear, ‘liquid’ in this context means tokens with a market capitalization of $15 million with $1 million in daily volume over a month. Currently a market cap of $15 million would place a coin at approximately the 700th rank on CoinMarketCap, suggesting liquidating some of these assets may be difficult.

Nancy Pelosi has, amazingly, chosen to recapitulate the defenses of Ginsburg’s non-retirement on Feinstein’s behalf. “I don’t know what political agendas are at work that are going after Senator Feinstein in that way. I’ve never seen them go after a man who was sick in the Senate in that way,” Pelosi told reporters yesterday.
...
Pelosi isn’t arguing that it’s better for women *on net* to allow Feinstein to stay in office. That argument would be nearly impossible given the stakes of the judiciary on abortion rights, let alone on all the other issues handled by the courts. Her case rests on elevating the individual prerogative of a senator above the millions of people she serves. It is to forget that senators are public servants at all to conceive of the role as a place of honor in American life and believe that stripping it away constitutes some form of punishment.

The explanation furnished by members of the chat group has been startlingly mundane. The leaker, they insist, was not a whistleblower but a young man who wanted to show off to his young friends with the documents never intended to leave the chat group.
“He’s a smart person. He knew what he was doing when he posted these documents, of course. These weren’t accidental leaks of any kind,” one member told the Washington Post.

Murphy the Eagle is expanding his family once again.
Last month, the World Bird Sanctuary noticed Murphy protecting a rock inside a large depression in the ground. He was seen sitting on the rock as if it were an egg, but now, he is putting those nurturing instincts to use.
In a Facebook post, the World Bird Sanctuary said Murphy was introduced to an eaglet that they are working to nurse back to health. The eaglet was released from "baby jail" this week, and Murphy had a chance to start the bonding process.

A new proposal would add a fixed monthly charge that would be based on the household income levels of the respective customers.
The tradeoff: The three utilities are proposing a reduction of 33% in electricity rates, which means it’s possible that segment of the bill could be less expensive.
Put another way, customers would be able to reduce a portion of their bill if they can control their electricity usage.
“This proposal aims to help lower bills for those who need it most and improves billing transparency and predictability for all customers,” said Marlene Santos, PG&E’s chief customer officer.
The primary effect could be to help reduce monthly bills for low-income customers, according to PG&E.
But the shift could mean jumps in monthly bills for some customers.
