With college sports at critical juncture, private equity groups pushing for their piece
    https://sports.yahoo.com/with-college-sports-at-critical-juncture-private-equity-groups-pushing-for-their-piece-120021493.html
College administrators are bracing for the new reality of sharing revenue directly with athletes as part of the terms of the House settlement agreement. For a year now, Drew Weatherford has worked in the shadows across college athletics. He’s held clandestine meetings with representatives from upwards of 50 Football Bowl Subdivision programs — dozens of athletic directors, a few university presidents, even some school board members and chief financial officers. There were phone calls from his office, Zoom chats in hotel lobbies and in-person gatherings at coffee shops. Most of them unfold in similar fashion. Gregarious and charming with a sweeping white smile, Weatherford, the former FSU quarterback-turned-private capital investor, presents a slide deck detailing a project that he and co-partner Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital Partners launched last year. Their goal is quite simple: Infuse instant cash into major college athletic departments. “No school has said, ‘No, that is not something we would consider,’” Weatherford said.

In the 1950s and 60s, his songs stunned and delighted listeners with their irreverence, wit and nihilism. Then he gave it all up to teach mathematics. Lehrer is still alive at 96 – so I went in search of answers

White Power Outage: Inside a Hilliard teen’s fascist terror plot
    https://www.matternews.org/community/white-power-outage-inside-a-hilliard-teens-fascist-terror-plot
They’d need weapons. Preferably ghost guns – untraceable, assembled at home without serial numbers. And some explosive material, fireballs to distract from the main event. Ideally, about 40 people would spread across the country, attacking electrical substations with assault rifles, damaging the transformers and crippling the power grid. With the lights out, chaos would reign, leading to deaths and an economic depression. The end goal of this particular attack, though, was even more sinister. The group’s three co-conspirators – Jonathan Frost of Texas, Jackson Sawall of Wisconsin and Christopher Brenner Cook, a Central Ohio native who attended Hilliard Darby High School – met online and bonded over neo-Nazi ideology. They dreamed of an Aryan homeland, and they didn’t believe the white America they envisioned could be realized without destroying the entire system. Revolution was the only answer, and an attack on the power grid seemed like the perfect way to create unrest, division and, ideally, a race war. The group’s manual stated that its members would not stop “until every enemy of Fascism has a rope around their neck.”

Scarlett Johansson told OpenAI not to use her voice — andshe’snot happy they might have anyway
    https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/20/24161253/scarlett-johansson-openai-altman-legal-action
Scarlett Johansson says that OpenAI asked her to be the voice behind ChatGPT — but that when she declined, the company went ahead and created a voice that sounded just like her. In a statement shared to NPR, Johansson says that she has now been “forced to hire legal counsel” and has sent two letters to OpenAI inquiring how the soundalike ChatGPT voice, known as Sky, was made. “Last September, I received an offer from Sam Altman, who wanted to hire me to voice the current ChatGPT 4.0 system,” Johansson writes. She says that Altman contacted her agent as recently as two days before the company first demoed the ChatGPT voice asking for her to reconsider.

What George Miller Has Learned in Forty-five Years of Making “Mad Max” Movies
    https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-new-yorker-interview/what-george-miller-has-learned-in-forty-five-years-of-making-mad-max-movies
George Miller’s film career began with barely averted violence. In 1971, when he was a twenty-six-year-old medical student in Sydney, Australia, he took a job at a construction site while he waited to start an internship at a hospital. One day, he was standing next to another worker when a brick fell from fourteen floors above them and hit the ground between them with a crack. “This was in the days before helmets,” Miller told me recently. “I got an existential jolt.” He and his younger brother Chris had won a student film competition at the University of New South Wales. The first prize was a filmmaking workshop in Melbourne, but George had never thought to attend it; filmmaking didn’t seem like a serious career option. It was the falling brick that changed his mind. “I thought, Damn it, I shouldn’t be on this site,” he said. The next day, he got on his motorcycle and rode the nine hundred kilometres to Melbourne.

Google Search adds a “web” filter, because it is no longer focused on web results
    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/google-search-adds-web-filter-as-it-pivots-to-ai-focused-search-results/
Google says you can't turn off AI overviews in the main search engine. I'm still seeing the "Labs" icon in the top right, with some checkboxes for AI features, but those checkboxes are no longer respected—some queries will bring up an AI overview no matter what. What you can do is go find a new "Web" filter, which can live alongside the usual filters like "Videos," "Images," "Maps," and "Shopping." That's right, a "Web" filter for what used to be a web search engine. Google says the Web filter can appear in the main tab bar depending on the query (when would a web filter not be appropriate?), but I've only ever seen it buried deep in the "More" section.
