Homeland Security has not yet come clean to the public about the full extent of its intelligence operations in Portland. “When the president makes the kind of statements he does on the news, you know that you have tacit approval,” the former intelligence officer said. “You just need a wink from your supervisor.”

'Baldur's Gate 2' Didn't Just Change RPGs, It Changed Games Themselves - VICE
    https://www.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/qj4qwd/baldurs-gate-2-didnt-just-change-rpgs-it-changed-games-themselves?__twitter_impression=true
While we’ve gone a long time without an additional game (soon to be rectified), the legacy has obviously been kept alive. While has had a long and powerful presence in the game space, and obviously had a huge influence on the recent success of , but pound-for-pound it’s hard to even for everything that has impacted. It’s in the DNA of games now, and where there are not explicit references, there are implicit borrowings. It remains a titan of a game twenty years later.

The radical mysticism of identitarian reductionism
    https://carlbeijer.substack.com/p/the-radical-mysticism-of-identitarian
The roles that class and identity play in determining history and human behavior have long been in controversy on the liberal-left, but particularly since 2016 this discourse has taken on a fairly rigid framing. On one hand, we encounter the sordid figure of the “class reductionist”: a hardline dogmatic radical who insists that everything must be explained with reference to the material economy. (The more accurate phrase, given how it is used, would be “material reductionist,” but the phrase “class reductionist” has evidently stuck.) On the other hand, meanwhile, we have the humble “intersectionalist”: the sophisticated, nuanced speaker who sees in our politics the influence of the material economy, but also of other forces of oppression, like racism and sexism. It isn’t difficult to understand why this frame became so entrenched. During her run for president, Hillary Clinton’s effort to position herself as an intersectionalist who admitted a role for the material economy and identity in our politics — while insisting that Sanders only acknowledged the former — let her pose as intellectually holistic and pragmatic, while vilifying Sanders as blinkered and simple-minded. And this framing has been useful ever since for the liberals who dominate our discourse and who want to delegitimize socialists in precisely the same way.

DeSantis proposes law to quash ‘disorderly assemblies’ in wake of Floyd, other protests

The law would include minimum six-month jail terms for anyone found guilty of throwing an object at law enforcement officers. It would also define as felonies blocking roadways, taking down monuments, or harassing people in public, among other things. ["Among other things" includes making the RICO act apply to BLM donations, apparently.]

Arrests made amid ongoing tensions as Mi'kmaw lobster fishery begins | CBC News
    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/arrests-made-ongoing-tensions-mi-kmaw-lobster-fishery-begins-1.5729752
Two people have been arrested and tensions continued to run high in Nova Scotia on Friday as many gathered to support, and oppose, a First Nation's new moderate livelihood fishery outside the regular lobster season. In Saulnierville, N.S., Friday morning, a group of boats belonging to non-Indigenous fishers could be seen circling the mouth of the harbour in front of the docked Mi'kmaw vessels. The Sipekne'katik First Nation held a ceremony Thursday in Saulnierville to bless the fleet and distribute licences and tags. Five licences were issued, each allowing the setting of 50 traps.

And it seemed like the most appropriate love letter to give you would be an extremely indirect one that screams, "DO NOT FEEL SCARED—I AM JUST INTERACTING WITH YOU!!")

White Supremacists Are a Threat to Elections, Says the DHS
    https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/white-supremacists-election/
Last week, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) whistleblower told the press that agency officials had ordered him to downplay the threat of white supremacist terrorism. But a recent DHS intelligence assessment about physical threats to the 2020 election season identifies “white supremacist extremists” as the foremost threat to the democratic process this year. The intelligence assessment, first referenced by Yahoo News and published in full by The Nation, was produced by the DHS’ Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) division. In an interview with The Nation, a former senior DHS I&A intelligence officer corroborated the whistleblower’s claims, describing the challenges he had faced to monitoring white supremacists under the Trump administration. “As soon as Trump came in, counterterrorism ended,” the former intelligence officer said, pointing to the Trump administration’s decision to dissolve DHS’s domestic terrorism division. Since then, DHS I&A’s focus has turned to trivial immigration matters like individuals overstaying their travel visas, he explained.

While the rest of America obsessed Saturday over the course Sen. Chuck Grassley and his colleagues might chart in replacing Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court, the Iowa lawmaker fixed his attention on a downed pigeon. “If u lost ur pet pidgin /it’s dead in front yard my Iowa farm,” Grassley, an inventive speller at age 87, chirped on Twitter. “JUST DISCOVERED.”

Kentucky State Rep. Robert Goforth indicted by Laurel grand jury
    https://www.thetimestribune.com/news/local_news/breaking-news-state-rep-robert-goforth-indicted-by-laurel-grand-jury/article_08abfb7f-2113-59fc-a2d9-1f0f980b7fe7.html
On Friday, a Laurel County grand jury returned an indictment against the 89th District’s State Rep. Robert S. Goforth on strangulation and assault charges stemming from an incident in late April. Goforth of East Bernstadt was indicted on one count of first-degree strangulation and one count of assault in the fourth degree. He was originally charged with the two aforementioned charges and third-degree terroristic threatening. Laurel Sheriff’s Sgt. John Inman arrested the state representative on April 21 at approximately 3:10 a.m. after a woman went to London’s 911 Dispatch Center and asked to speak with a deputy regarding a domestic assault. The deputies noted the woman had visible marks on her forehead, neck and arms. The female stated she was able to leave the residence after promising Goforth she would unlock her phone — the subject that initiated the altercation, according to the arrest citation. The citation states the female said Goforth struck her in the forehead and she had a bruise and knot on her forehead. The female was also found to have bruising on her leg and reported that Goforth had stated he was going to kill her.

Pentagon unveils new religious liberty policies after pressure from conservative lawmakers
    https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2020/09/18/pentagon-unveils-new-religious-liberty-policies-after-pressure-from-conservative-lawmakers/
While critics of the revised regulation say it will encourage military superiors to push their religious beliefs on subordinates and fellow service members, proponents of the rule have hailed it as a victory for religious liberty. “Service members don’t lose their religious freedom by virtue of being in the military,” Mike Berry, general counsel for First Liberty Institute, told Military Times. The revised regulation, DoD Instruction 1300.17, Religious Liberty in the Military Services, was unveiled earlier this month. It establishes Department of Defense policy “in furtherance of the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment” and states that DoD components will “accommodate individual expressions of sincerely held beliefs” ― provided there are no adverse impacts on military readiness and unit cohesion. Such beliefs can include religious beliefs or moral principles, the guidance says. Likewise, the policy claims that an expression of these “sincerely held beliefs” will not be used as the “basis of any adverse personnel action, discrimination, or denial of promotion, schooling, training, or assignment.” It also calls on the military services to spearhead education and training efforts on religious liberty policies for commanders, judge advocate generals, chaplains, recruiters and others.
