    Corporate Death Penalty
    https://historicly.substack.com/p/corporate-death-penalty
Death penalty advocates argue that some crimes are so heinous that justice can only be achieved through execution. And, in a certain way, they have a point. Since corporations are people, at least according to former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, then like people, they too should be put them to death when deserved.

A neural correlate of sensory consciousness in a corvid bird
    https://science.sciencemag.org/content/369/6511/1626
Alternatively, consciousness emerged independently on the basis of convergent evolution on different branches of the vertebrate “tree of life.” According to this hypothesis, consciousness was absent in the common stem-amniotic ancestor, but—comparable to homeothermy—evolved later and independently during the rise of, at least, birds and mammals.

YouTuber Boogie2988 Fires Gun at Frank Hassle
    https://gamerant.com/boogie-2988-frank-hassle/
A heated confrontation between YouTubers Steven "Boogie2988" Williams and Frank Hassle seemingly came to a head after Hassle showed up at Williams' house, resulting in Williams firing a "warning shot" at Hassle, according to images, audio, and footage of the incident now being circulated online. The incident follows a harassment campaign perpetrated by Hassle against Williams, culminating with Hassle arriving at his Williams' home. Recordings from the incident show Hassle arriving at Williams' doorstep, during which the two exchange a heated argument. Williams, who is holding a gun throughout the confrontation, warns Hassle to leave the property before firing a warning shot at Hassle. Hassle can be heard laughing during the incident, asking "Are you going to shoot me in your doorway?" The confrontation continues after Williams fires the warning shot, with Williams continually asking Hassle to leave. Eventually, Hassle leaves the property and the police are called. Since the incident, Dramalert YouTuber Keemstar has become heavily involved, releasing a video featuring footage of the incident and a "debate" between Williams and Hassle, as well as audio and footage from both sides of the confrontation. The resulting fallout of the meeting has been a mixture of vitriol, memes, and confused reactions from internet spectators. Williams is best known for his character Francis, who is portrayed as a Mountain Dew addict with anger issues, which has fueled a number of befuddled reactions from all corners of the internet. Williams suffers from mental health and anxiety disorders, topics he has been open about on his channel in the past. One of the most recent updates regarding the incident came from Williams himself, stating that the incident is now a criminal investigation. Williams claims to have since handed footage over to the police, and stated that it's now up to the police to decide what happens next. Hassle's Twitter timeline has been full of memes and images of the incident, including an image of him flipping off Williams, who is standing in his doorway with a gun. Beyond that, Hassle has offered few solid updates about the incident. The incident now falls into the hands of the police, with the investigation of the matter likely determining what happens next. Social media guidelines already seem to prohibit portions of the footage being uploaded, but both parties recorded what happened, including footage from Williams' video doorbell. That, coupled with history of the pairs' exchanges on Twitter and other platforms, will likely be key to the investigations.

Airlines Face Desolate Future as Attempts to Reopen Crumble
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-09-23/coronavirus-pandemic-airlines-face-empty-future-as-crisis-continues
Airlines have felt the pain of the coronavirus pandemic more than other companies. Almost overnight the bulk of their business ceased. But in mid-2020 there was at least hope that Covid-19 might not be as virulent as first thought; that warmer months would bring some respite; that travel corridors—agreements allowing passengers to fly between two countries without quarantine—might get people back in the air. Now, almost eight months into the pandemic, with cities reentering lockdown and a vaccine likely months away, it’s apparent there will be no quick comeback. International air traffic in July was 92% below 2019 levels, and there was little sign of improvement in August, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). More than 400,000 airline jobs have been cut since February, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. “This is lasting longer and is deeper than most people thought,” says Scott Kirby, chief executive officer of United Airlines Holdings Inc. “And our view is demand is not coming back. People are not going to get back and travel like they did before until there’s a vaccine that’s been widely distributed.”

Los Angeles Comic Con says event will go on at LA Convention Center with coronavirus safety measures
    https://www.dailynews.com/los-angeles-comic-con-says-event-will-go-on-at-la-convention-center-with-coronavirus-safety-measures
Los Angeles Comic-Con is moving forward with a plan for an in-person event in December, making it one of the first Southern California festivals or conventions to attempt to do so since the coronavirus pandemic shut things down in March, organizers announced Sunday. The convention had previously announced new dates — Dec. 11-13 in place of its usual late October ones — but given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it was unclear whether it would actually happen or, like San Diego Comic-Con, Coachella, and many, many other large events, it would skip this year entirely. Now, L.A. Comic-Con leaders say they have plans in place for a safe event at the Los Angeles Convention Center; tickets will go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Poland LGBT: Diplomats from 50 countries call for end to discrimination
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-54317902
Ambassadors from around the world have called for the rights of gay and transgender people to be respected in Poland, where many towns have declared themselves free of "LGBT ideology". An open letter released on Sunday urges the Polish government to "end discrimination" of sexual minorities. It was signed by envoys from 50 countries, including Poland's EU partners, the US, Israel and India. Hostility to LGBT rights has become a flashpoint in Poland in recent years. Conservative politicians, including the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS), have frequently taken aim at the LGBT community. Andrzej Duda, who was re-elected as president in June on a nationalist agenda, has said the LGBT movement is "more destructive" than communism.

Texas sheriff indicted after probe into Black man's death
    https://apnews.com/article/austin-police-archive-texas-54b3c74d0be6b0f99c193f6f6020be67
A grand jury on Monday indicted a Texas sheriff on charges accusing him of destroying or concealing video in an investigation into the death in custody of a Black man, Javier Ambler, that was filmed by a police reality TV series “Live PD.” Williamson County records show Sheriff Robert Chody is facing the third-degree felony charge that is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He was booked into his jail Monday on a $10,000 bond. In June, Williamson County prosecutors announced an investigation “involving possible tampering with evidence” following the 40-year-old Ambler’s death in March 2019. Ambler died after Williamson County sheriff’s deputies repeatedly used stun guns on him, despite his pleas that he was sick and couldn’t breathe.

'FarmVille' Changed Online Gaming Forever, Now It's Going Offline
    https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/z3ea89/farmville-changed-online-gaming-forever-now-its-going-offline
All things move toward their end, even once-mega-successful video games. And so it is that FarmVille, the breakout Facebook game that consumed people’s attention during the Obama administration, will soon be gone. Developer Zynga announced the game’s dissolution on Monday morning in a press release.  What does it give as the reason? Dropping sales? Lack of interest more than a decade since its release? No, 'twas Adobe killed the beast. FarmVille was a Flash game, and Flash is dead thanks to Adobe.

The Students Left Behind by Remote Learning
    https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/10/05/the-students-left-behind-by-remote-learning
Shemar, a twelve-year-old from East Baltimore, is good at math, and Karen Ngosso, his fourth-grade math teacher, at Abbottston Elementary School, is one reason why. “I would try to pump him up and tell him, ‘You’re a good student,’ ” she said. But she knew that he didn’t get enough sleep, and he was often absent. His home situation, like those of many of her students, was unstable: his mother suffered from drug addiction, and they moved frequently. Ngosso kept an eye on Shemar even after he started fifth grade, which is when I met him, in late 2018, at First & Franklin Presbyterian Church, a few blocks from the transitional housing where he and his mother were living. I volunteered to tutor Shemar, and once a week I picked him up from school and we’d do homework at a coffee shop.

Virus cases rise in US heartland, home to anti-mask feelings
    https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-iowa-new-york-city-new-york-michael-brown-050ddaa249c97c222d4fd2f1460dbd94
It began with devastation in the New York City area, followed by a summertime crisis in the Sun Belt. Now the coronavirus outbreak is heating up fast in smaller cities in the heartland, often in conservative corners of America where anti-mask sentiment runs high. Elsewhere around the country, Florida’s Republican governor lifted all restrictions on restaurants and other businesses Friday and all but set aside local mask ordinances in the political battleground state, in a move attacked by Democrats as hasty. Meanwhile, confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S. hit another milestone — 7 million — according to the count kept by Johns Hopkins University, though the real number of infections is believed to be much higher. The spike across the Midwest as well as parts of the West has set off alarms at hospitals, schools and colleges. Wisconsin is averaging more than 2,000 new cases a day over the last week, compared with 675 three weeks earlier. Hospitalizations in the state are at their highest level since the outbreak took hold in the U.S. in March.
