In the case of William of Norwich—a young boy found dead in a wood in England, in the year 1144—his premature demise was transformed, ex post facto, into a ritual supposedly performed by Jews explicitly to mock the Passion of the Christ. In this lurid account of ritual desecration, the Jews scourged the boy, anointed him with thorns, lanced him in the side as Christ had been lanced, and staunched the flow of blood with boiling water. All this was meant to consecrate the celebration of Passover. William’s hagiographer, the monk Thomas of Monmouth, laid out this unsubstantiated account in excruciating detail, leading to the canonization of the dead boy. Like mushrooms after rain, accounts of miracles arose around his tomb. But even in that same account, authored in 1173, the monk was not content to limit the image of depravity to the Jews of a single city in eastern England. Instead, drawing on a secondhand source—a monk named Theobald who supposedly converted from Judaism after hearing of the miracles of St. William of Norwich—Monmouth depicted a grimmer, larger scheme. “He verily told us that in the ancient writings of his fathers it was written that the Jews, without the shedding of human blood, could neither obtain their freedom, nor could they ever return to their fatherland,” Monmouth wrote. “Hence it was laid down by them in ancient times that every year they must sacrifice a Christian in some part of the world to the Most High God in scorn and contempt of Christ, that so they might avenge their sufferings on Him.”

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red is reportedly implementing a mandatory crunch period ahead of the game’s November release date, according to a Bloomberg report. Employees will be required to work six day work weeks — “your typical amount of work and one day of the weekend” according to an email allegedly leaked from the Polish company. Previously, CD Projekt Red promised that its employees wouldn’t have to “crunch” — that is, work grueling hours over a span of time to complete a game. However, in January, CD Project Red CEO Adam Kicinski admitted during an investor’s call that “some degree” of crunch would be necessary in completing the game. Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed multiple times, moves that onlookers hoped would reduce crunch. The game is now slated for Nov. 19. According to the Bloomberg report, CD Projekt studio lead Adam Badowski sent an email to notify employees about the required crunch period.

The Supreme Court has found that the bread in Subway's heated sandwiches has too much sugar in it to meet the legal definition of being bread. The court ruled that with a high sugar content, the sandwich could not be deemed a staple food which attracts a zero VAT rate. It rejected arguments by a Subway franchisee that it was not liable for VAT on some of its takeaway products, including teas, coffees and heated filled sandwiches. The appeal by Bookfinders Ltd, based in Tuam, Co Galway, included consideration of whether the bread sold in Subway sandwiches fell outside the statutory definition of bread intended under the Value-Added Tax Act 1972 to attract a zero VAT rate.
