Blockchain, the amazing solution for almost nothing
    https://thecorrespondent.com/655/blockchain-the-amazing-solution-for-almost-nothing/86714927310-8f431cae
And then there’s the environmental problem. The environmental problem? Aren’t we talking about digital coins? Yes, which makes it even stranger. Solving all those complex puzzles requires a huge amount of energy. So much energy that the two biggest blockchains in the world – bitcoin and Ethereum – are now using up the same amount of electricity as the whole of Austria. Carrying out a payment with Visa requires about 0.002 kilowatt-hours; the same payment with bitcoin uses up 906 kilowatt-hours, more than half a million times as much, and enough to power a two-person household for about three months.

Why Can’t I Fix My Own Phone, Toaster, or Tractor?
    https://themarkup.org/ask-the-markup/2020/10/20/0-electronics-right-to-repair-ventilators-iphone
As critically ill COVID-19 patients started showing up in droves at emergency rooms around the world, ventilators became a crucial technology keeping patients alive. When hospitals’ own resources became overwhelmed, the Strategic National Stockpile dusted off and distributed thousands of the life-support machines throughout the country.   But not all were in working condition.  J. Scot Mackeil, a biomedical technician with more than 40 years of experience, worked on a team tasked with inspecting machines sent to Massachusetts’s Emergency Management Agency. In mid-April, while performing spot checks on hundreds of ventilators packed in freight pods, Mackeil discovered one with a damaged power connector.  But when he asked the manufacturer to send him a replacement part, he was surprised to receive the manufacturer’s response: “ ‘Absolutely no.’ ”

Impossible Animals: Bernard Heuvelmans and the Making of Cryptozoology
    https://wearethemutants.com/2020/10/06/impossible-animals-bernard-heuvelmans-and-the-making-of-cryptozoology/
During Christmas 1879, the last known wild tarpan (Equus gmelini) was run off a cliff somewhere in Ukraine. Native to the forests of Poland, this undomesticated horse species had survived in Europe’s ancient woodlands since at least the time of Herodotus. Apart from a few individuals scattered among various zoos, its death left Przewalski’s horse the sole wild species.

Magary: Stop watching college football already
    https://www.sfgate.com/collegesports/amp/Magary-Stop-watching-college-football-15658093.php?__twitter_impression=true
I know the pandemic has blown everything to s—t here SPECIFICALLY because leaders and corporate interests have abdicated any responsibility and deemed virus prevention the domain of sole individuals, same as they have with global warming and a million other crises. It’s on us. It’s always on us. It’s never on them. That’s backwards of course, but since it’s the current dynamic, I reserve the right to tell you that if you actively support college football right now, you’re an asshole.
