A proposed bill in the Missouri Senate would pay bounty hunters to catch illegal immigrants in our state. Opponents of the bill said it threatens the rights, safety, and dignity of undocumented immigrants.
Senator-Elect David Gregory sponsored Senate Bill 72. Gregory’s bill wanted to pay Missourians $1,000 to find and detain illegal immigrants in the state.

In a case that seeks to invalidate over 60,000 ballots cast in North Carolina’s Supreme Court election, a federal judge ruled that the state’s Republican-dominated high court should decide, instead of him.
On Monday, U.S. District Judge Richard Myers, an appointee of President-elect Donald Trump, sent GOP candidate Jefferson Griffin’s lawsuit challenging his apparent loss in the November election back to the state Supreme Court.
“Should a federal tribunal resolve such a dispute?” Myers wrote. “This court, with due regard for state sovereignty and the independence of states to decide matters of substantial public concern, thinks not.”
Griffin trails Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs by 734 votes following two recounts of the results. But he and the state Republican Party have challenged tens of thousands of votes, arguing that they were cast by ineligible voters.
Myers’ decision is a win for Griffin, who has asked the state Supreme Court to block the state from certifying the election results while it takes up his challenge.

The B.C. Supreme Court has ordered WestJet to hand over all its files on harassment of flight attendants, in a class-action lawsuit alleging widespread misconduct by pilots.
The ruling by Justice Jacqueline Hughes says WestJet has been slow and "potentially adversarial" regarding the documents and it's unclear why complaint files haven't been produced in a timely manner.
The underlying claim in the long-running lawsuit, filed in 2016, alleges WestJet breached flight attendants' contracts by breaking a "promise" to provide a harassment-free workplace.
The ruling posted Friday but dated Dec. 11 says the airline tried to limit document production to complaints against male pilots by female flight attendants who haven't opted out of the lawsuit.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is suing Walmart and financial technology platform Branch Messenger, alleging they forced delivery drivers on the Spark platform to use specific deposit accounts to get paid and misled the workers about how they could access their earnings, according to a Dec. 23, 2024, press release. The CFPB claims this led to workers paying more than $10 million in fees to transfer their earnings to an account of their choice. In an emailed statement, Walmart said the CFPB “rushed” its investigation into the retailer and that it will fight the lawsuit in court.

“The ideologies of this group were concerning,” an expert was quoted as saying, “and they genuinely believed that they had the power to construct their own legal system, threaten others, and [that they] were above the law.” In the U.S., that’s a winning electoral platform, but the four people in this story have the bad luck to live in the United Kingdom.
Belief is one thing, no matter how odd, but these four acted on their beliefs illegally and with weirdness aforethought. Specifically, they barged into the Essex Coroner’s Service last April carrying handcuffs and announcing they were there to arrest the senior coroner. He wasn’t there at the time, so they settled for threatening a different one. According to her, the four accused her of “interfering with the dead.” Which, in a sense, is what coroners do at least some of the time. It’s just not illegal for them.
