This is inchoate fascism, fascism in its experimental, speculative phase, in which is forming a coalition of minoritarian popular forces with elements in the executive and the repressive wing of the state. It would be devastatingly stupid, complacent beyond belief, to expect US democracy to remain sufficiently stable in the coming years to deny this incipient fascism more opportunities to congeal, and grow. Don't tell me that the US bourgeoisie will never support fascism because liberal democracy is working well enough. Don't tell me that fascism won't gain a foothold in a society where the Left has been weak for decades, and much of the labour movement barely has a pulse. These points are beside the point. Fascism never grows in the first instance because the capitalist class rallies behind it. It grows because it draws around its nucleus those whom Clara Zetkin described as "the politically homeless, the socially uprooted, the destitute and disillusioned". And incipient fascism has shown, from India to the Philippines, that it does not need a strong communism to react against: Ernst Nolte's hypothesis was incorrect. There is an urgent need for an anti-fascist movement in the United States.

A YouGov Direct poll of 1,397 registered voters who had heard about the event finds that most (62%) voters perceive today's actions as a threat to democracy. Overall, one in five voters (21%) say they support the goings-on at the Capitol. Those who believe that voter fraud took place and affected the election outcome are especially likely to feel that today’s events were justified, at 56%.

There will not be a peaceful transition of power between the 45th and 46th American presidents. The president told his supporters he would never accept the results of the election he lost, he urged them to go to the Capitol to support him, and they complied. Trump’s loyalists stormed in on the official counting of the electoral votes, forcing the legislators to break it off, hide under their desks, and then flee the building. The invaders looted souvenirs; police shot a woman dead.

Rudy Giuliani, a lawyer and top adviser to President Donald Trump, is calling Republican lawmakers urging them to delay the electoral vote count by at least one day to allow the president and his team to present more evidence of alleged election fraud. Giuliani was making calls this evening, as late as an hour before Congress reconvened, in a desperate attempt to block the final count of Electoral College votes. At approximately 7 p.m., Giuliani called newly sworn-in Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a staunch Trump ally, imploring him to stall the process. “I want to discuss with you how they're trying to rush this hearing and how we need you, our Republican friends, to try to just slow it down so we can get these legislatures to get more information to you,” Giuliani said in a voicemail. “And I know they're reconvening at 8 tonight, but it ... the only strategy we can follow is to object to numerous states and raise issues so that we get ourselves into tomorrow—ideally until the end of tomorrow. I know McConnell is doing everything he can to rush it, which is kind of a kick in the head because it's one thing to oppose us, it's another thing not to give us a fair opportunity to contest it.”

The woman, identified by her husband as Ashli Babbitt, is said to have tweeted that “the storm is here” ahead of the violent breach of the Capitol Building. Authorities have yet to confirm her identity after she was pronounced dead at a local hospital Wednesday, and attempts to reach her family were not immediately successful. A spokesman with the Metropolitan Police Department told The Daily Beast they were still investigating the woman’s death and that “additional details will be forthcoming.” The Wall Street Journal reported late Wednesday that a woman was shot by Capitol Police after breaching barricades to storm the building. Babbitt supported the violent pro-Trump QAnon conspiracy theory, according to her Twitter account. She quoted “Q,” the anonymous figure behind QAnon, which falsely claims Democrats and other opponents of President Trump are Satanic pedophiles, in an Aug. 21 tweet, writing: “It is going to be biblical - Q.” On Sept. 7, Babbitt posted a picture of herself at a Trump boat parade with the hashtag “WWG1WGA,” a reference to the QAnon slogan, “Where we go one, we go all.”

With control of both chambers and the White House, Democrats could mandate changes among the Capitol Police force.
