Mr. Sanders said in the interview that he wanted an initial, emergency stimulus package to be “big.” He thinks it must include an additional $1,400 in direct payments for adults and children, on top of the $600 that Congress just passed, along with money for states and cities to fund coronavirus vaccine distribution, testing and contact tracing. He also wants to create an emergency universal health care program, so that anyone can get medical treatment during the pandemic, whether they currently have insurance or not.

Michigan banned the open carry of guns inside its Capitol building on Monday, following mob violence last week at the US Capitol and last year’s storming of the Michigan statehouse. The Michigan ban came as reports detailed FBI warnings about possible violence at state capitols and in Washington in the run-up to the 20 January inauguration of Joe Biden. An FBI report on 29 December, quoted by Yahoo News, warned that “some [Trump] followers indicated willingness to commit violence in support of their ideology, created contingency plans in the event violence occurred at the events, and identified law enforcement security measures and possible countermeasures”.

Border officials have been confiscating sandwiches and other foodstuffs from drivers arriving in the Netherlands from the UK after Brexit, TV footage has revealed. A Dutch TV clip showed a driver had his ham sandwiches taken away by border officials as he arrived – with one border guard joking: “Welcome to the Brexit, sir.” The officials could be heard explaining the new, post-Brexit rules for drivers, which forbid people from bringing food which originates in the UK into EU countries. “Since Brexit you are longer allowed certain foods to Europe,” one border official at the Hook of Holland sea port told Netherlands’ NPO television. One driver coming off the ferry from Britain with ham sandwiches wrapped in tinfoil was heard pleading with the border guard: “Can you take the meat and leave me the bread?” The official replied: “No, everything will be confiscated – welcome to the Brexit, sir. I’m sorry.”

At a Turning Point USA event in December, Representative Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina encouraged attendees to “call your congressman and feel free — you can lightly threaten them.” “Say: ‘If you don’t support election integrity, I’m coming after you. Madison Cawthorn’s coming after you. Everybody’s coming after you,’” Mr. Cawthorn said.

ederal authorities have arrested the son of a Brooklyn Supreme Court judge who stormed the U.S. Capitol last week, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation. Aaron Mostofsky, 34, son of Judge Shlomo Mostofsky, was arrested Tuesday morning at his brother’s home in Brooklyn, the source said. He was charged with theft of government property, knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, impeding government business and unlawful entry and disorderly conduct, according to a criminal complaint.

Video posted to Instagram shows Democratic Rep. Lou Correa of California being screamed at by apparent pro-Trump supporters in the Dulles International Airport last Thursday, the latest lawmaker accosted by the President's supporters at an airport. The video is edited, full of profanity and was taken by one of the individuals who yelled at Correa, who posted it on Friday. In it, Correa is seen being surrounded and confronted by people in the Washington, DC-area airport located in Virginia. Correa said he was looking forward to a long flight and to go to sleep after the House stayed up late to ratify the Electoral College results following the riot at the Capitol the previous day. He said he turned the corner to go to his gate and a number of President Donald Trump supporters were there from the day before. He said about 20 individuals confronted him once they realized he was a member of Congress. "They picked me out, and boy, they came at me," Correa told CNN. "It was going to be turning violent," said Correa. "It wasn't a fear. It was just a matter of waiting for the first punch to happen." At one point, the video shows a tense standoff between Correa and a man that approaches him and gets in his face. "Nobody here voted for you," someone is heard yelling at Correa. "We don't want you." Later, Correa responds, "That's okay, I don't work for you." When asked what went through his mind, the California Democrat said, "stand my ground, not let them run me over and get ready for a major fight."

An east Alabama man who investigators say violated his bond in Lee County, Alabama by traveling to Washington to participate in the violent riot at the U.S. Capitol is in federal custody after agents located him at an Auburn home. 23-year-old William Watson of Auburn is believed to be the bearded man in the tan sweatshirt in an image released by Metropolitan Police Department. Watson is wanted in a joint effort by the U.S. Secret Service and FBI as investigators continue locating and arresting individuals in a mob of President Donald Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol as lawmakers worked to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. Five people were killed, including a Capitol police officer. Watson was taken into custody without incident around 1:45 Monday afternoon at a home along Samantha Court in Auburn, Alabama. Federal authorities and Auburn police were present when Watson was led from the house in handcuffs after a Lee County Judge revoked his bond on prior drug charges. Watson is now in Federal custody. News 3 confirmed Watson was arrested by Auburn back on July 2 on drug charges, including Trafficking in Marijuana and LSD and Drug Possession, and released on a $103,000 bond. Watson’s bond was revoked Monday morning after a Lee County Judge approved the Lee County District Attorney’s Office Motion.

The extremist group has used its social media channels to spread propaganda and disinformation while gloating about the unprecedented attack on the nation’s capital. The vast majority of its posts took place on Parler, the alternative social media platform favored by the far-right, and Telegram, the encrypted messaging app and cloud chat service. While Parler was forced offline after Amazon removed it from its cloud hosting service, Telegram remains functional and has seen an influx of users over the past few days. The official Proud Boys USA Telegram channel attempted to defend the insurrectionists, claiming that it spent months “peacefully protesting & trying to get a resolution on an election in which they didn’t trust the results.” The group then attempted to shift the attention onto Black Lives Matter and anti-fascist activists who the group alleged had spent months “using intimidation to get the changes they wanted.” “It looks like the right has also learned this lesson,” read a statement on the Proud Boys channel. “Hope you are satisfied.” Another prominent Proud Boys Telegram channel is “Proud Boys: Uncensored,” which is reportedly being operated by the leader of the New Hampshire chapter of the Proud Boys, Todd M. Clark. The fascism-promoting channel has continued to incite violence in the wake of the attack on the Capitol, claiming that “the difference between a patriot and a rebel depends on who wins the war.” The channel also encouraged its followers to target politicians. It posted a clip of Sen. Lindsey Graham being harassed by an angry mob of Trump supporters at the airport with the caption, “They’re no longer safe in public … Never let these system agents known a moment of peace.” Shortly thereafter, the “Proud Boys: Uncensored” channel polled its followers on whether or not they wanted “total war.” More than 10,500 people voted in the poll, 75 percent of whom voted “yes.”

Sicknick, who served 12 years with the Capitol Police, died last Thursday from injuries he sustained “while physically engaging with protesters,” the force said in a statement. Law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that Sicknick was struck on the head with a fire extinguisher while defending the Capitol.

The US military will have a larger footprint in the nation's capital by this weekend than the total number of troops in Afghanistan and Iraq combined.  There will be at least 10,000 National Guard troops in Washington, DC, by Saturday to bump up security ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's January 20 inauguration. Comparatively, as of January 15 there will be roughly 2,500 US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq respectively (about 5,000 total). There are currently 6,200 National Guard troops in Washington, and National Guard Bureau chief Gen. Daniel Hokanson said he has authorization to deploy as many as 15,000 troops to DC for inauguration. There are major concerns about security for inauguration following the pro-Trump Capitol siege on January 6, which led to five deaths and sent shockwaves through the nation. The fact there will be more troops in DC than the two countries that have in many ways been the primary battlegrounds of the US government's global war on terror is a stark reminder that homegrown extremism poses a greater threat to the US than foreign terrorism.

Schumer was about two minutes into his statement when a screaming woman burst into view to yell abuse and declare that she was “sexually excited” by last week’s riots, “that’s how much I loathe you.”

The top federal prosecutor for Washington, D.C., on Tuesday promised to investigate threats and assaults on journalists who were covering the deadly riot at the Capitol last week. Michael Sherwin, the acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia who's leading the investigation and prosecutions following the riot, said his office is aware of reports of violence and harassment against reporters during the incident. "Such violence will not be tolerated," Sherwin said in a statement. "We are resolutely committed to upholding the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment, including speech, peaceful assembly, and press, and we will investigate, prosecute, and hold accountable anyone who attempts to obstruct or curtail these freedoms through violence or intimidation."  The prosecutor invited the public to send tips to his office regarding the targeting of journalists. Sherwin's office has charged about 55 people with a range of crimes since the violent mob stormed the Capitol last Wednesday. He has said that more cases could follow as the investigation unfolds, including against those who may have incited the violence.

Imagine this. As law enforcement tries to secure the Capitol following a pro-Trump insurrection by rioters bent on stopping the peaceful transition of power -- some of whom appeared driven by a desire to murder the vice president and members of Congress -- President Donald Trump publicly blames antifa activists after seeing that baseless claim floated on his television. It would have been a disaster for the notion of a shared reality, powering a conspiracy theory to horrific heights.  We were perilously close to that poisonous scenario coming to pass. Twitter’s decision to lock the president out of his account on the night of the January 6 riot is all that appears to have prevented it. The social media platform’s move to suspend Trump, which it later made permanent, was late and imperfect, but it is nonetheless already paying dividends for the information ecosystem. Trump reportedly told House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) during a Monday phone call that “antifa people” were responsible for the storming of the Capitol, according to an Axios report. There’s no evidence whatsoever for this conspiracy theory -- many of the rioters were waving Trump flags and some were well-known far-right extremists -- but it nonetheless spread through the right-wing fever swamps after the attack.  Notably, several Fox News programs -- including every show that aired between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on the night of the attack -- floated the false idea that the violence had been started by leftist infiltrators.

Deutsche Bank will not do business in the future with U.S. President Donald Trump or his companies in the wake of his supporters' assault on the U.S. Capitol, the New York Times reported. Deutsche Bank is Trump's biggest lender, with about $340 million in loans outstanding to the Trump Organization, the president's umbrella group that is currently overseen by his two sons, according to Trump's disclosures with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics dated July 31 last year, plus banking sources. The move, reported by the NYT and citing a person familiar with the bank's thinking, comes as Signature Bank - where Trump's ethics disclosures show he has checking and money-market accounts - called for him to step down. "The resignation of the president ... is in the best interests of our nation and the American people," Signature Bank said on its website. A spokesman for Deutsche Bank declined to comment on Tuesday on the NYT report.

Former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, his health director and other ex-officials have been told they’re being charged after a new investigation of the Flint water scandal, which devastated the majority Black city with lead-contaminated water and was blamed for a deadly outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in 2014-15, The Associated Press has learned. Two people with knowledge of the planned prosecution told the AP on Tuesday that the attorney general’s office has informed defense lawyers about indictments in Flint and told them to expect initial court appearances soon. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The AP could not determine the nature of the charges against Snyder, former health department director Nick Lyon and others who were in the Snyder administration. Courtney Covington Watkins, a spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office, said only that investigators were “working diligently” and “will share more as soon as we’re in a position to do so.” Snyder’s attorney didn’t return calls seeking comment.

A leading Israeli human rights group has begun describing both Israel and its control of the Palestinian territories as a single “apartheid” regime, using an explosive term that the country’s leaders and their supporters vehemently reject. In a report released Tuesday, B’Tselem says that while Palestinians live under different forms of Israeli control in the occupied West Bank, blockaded Gaza, annexed east Jerusalem and within Israel itself, they have fewer rights than Jews in the entire area between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. “One of the key points in our analysis is that this is a single geopolitical area ruled by one government,” said B’Tselem director Hagai El-Ad. “This is not democracy plus occupation. This is apartheid between the river and the sea.”
