    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/epoch-times-canada-post-suspensions-1.5892549

China will 'no longer recognise' UK-issued BNO passports for Hongkongers
    https://hongkongfp.com/2021/01/29/breaking-china-will-no-longer-recognise-uk-issued-bno-passports-for-hongkongers/
China on Friday said it will “no longer recognise” the British National (Overseas) passport for Hong Kongers, as Britain prepares to offer millions of former colonial subjects a way to escape Beijing’s crackdown on dissent. From Sunday, those with a BN(O) passport and their dependents will be able to apply online for a visa allowing them to live and work in the United Kingdom. After five years they can then apply for citizenship. The new immigration scheme is a response to Beijing’s decision to impose a sweeping national security law on the city last year to snuff out huge and often violent democracy protests. Britain accused China of tearing up its promise ahead of Hong Kong’s 1997 handover that the financial hub would maintain key liberties and autonomy for 50 years. It argues it has a moral duty to protect its former subjects.

We Have to Save Books from the Book People
    https://jezebel.com/we-have-to-save-books-from-the-book-people-1846094573
Some online discourses resurface as if on schedule, like an itch that can never be scratched to satisfaction. I’d like to prescribe a salve for one of Twitter’s most obnoxious perennial obsessions: fulminating about the books we were assigned in high school. I’ve been going online to complain about stuff since the first Clinton administration and I’ve been teaching English for seven years, so please trust me when I say that we have to stop doing this. We look like idiots.

Google Deletes 100,000 Negative Reviews of Robinhood App From Angry Users
    https://gizmodo.com/google-deletes-100-000-negative-reviews-of-robinhood-ap-1846156699
Google removed at least 100,000 negative reviews of the stock trading app Robinhood from the Google Play app store after angry users sent a flood of critical reviews that caused the app’s rating to plummet on Thursday. The app’s rating went from roughly four stars out of five on Wednesday to just one star on Thursday. Robinhood users were understandably upset after the company halted purchases of GameStop’s stock and other stocks promoted by Reddit’s WallStreetBets community.

Has science solved one of history’s greatest adventure mysteries?
    https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2021/01/has-science-solved-history-greatest-adventure-mystery-dyatlov/
A 62-year-old adventure mystery that has prompted conspiracy theories around Soviet military experiments, Yetis, and even extraterrestrial contact may have its best, most sensible explanation yet—one found in a series of avalanche simulations based in part on car crash experiments and animation used in the movie Frozen. In an article published today in the journal Communications Earth and Environment, researchers present data pointing to the likelihood that a bizarrely small, delayed avalanche may have been responsible for the gruesome injuries and deaths of nine experienced hikers who never returned from a planned 200-mile adventure in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the winter of 1959.

A college football coach’s season at war with the coronavirus — and his own school
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/01/19/tony-franklin-middle-tennessee-football-coronavirus/
He has groomed NFL stars and designed record-breaking offenses. But Tony Franklin has never been able to shut up and coach. This time, he says, he is done for good. On his last day as a football coach, Tony Franklin led Middle Tennessee toward the end zone one last time. Players and coaches followed. Some took a knee. They listened. Franklin has spent four decades on one sideline or another, calling plays, shaping offenses and minds. At California, he designed a run-pass option attack for Jared Goff. At Louisiana Tech, his up-tempo spread led the nation in scoring. At Kentucky … well, that’s complicated, and it ended with Franklin getting death threats and going broke. But he had been honest, and right, about one of his profession’s wrongs.

Increasingly this is also the case in middle-income countries too, including Thailand and Brazil. In Iran, a birthrate of 1.7 children per woman has alarmed the government; it recently announced that state clinics would no longer hand out contraceptives or offer vasectomies.

Pelosi wants security money to face 'enemy' within House
    https://apnews.com/article/pelosi-congress-threats-e58280d2ca125f45f280cbd514078543
Lawmakers face threats of violence from an “enemy” within Congress, and more money is needed to protect them, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday, a startling acknowledgment of escalating internal tensions over safety since this month’s Capitol attack by supporters of former President Donald Trump. The California Democrat’s remarks came as the acting chief of the Capitol Police said separately that “vast improvements” are needed to protect the Capitol and adjacent office buildings, including permanent fencing. Such barricades have ringed the complex since the deadly Jan. 6 riot, but many lawmakers have long resisted giving the nation’s symbol of democracy the look of a besieged compound, and leaders were noncommittal about the idea.

Marjorie Taylor Greene penned conspiracy theory that a laser beam from space started deadly 2018 California wildfire
    https://www.mediamatters.org/facebook/marjorie-taylor-greene-penned-conspiracy-theory-laser-beam-space-started-deadly-2018
Rep. Greene is a proponent of the Camp Fire laser beam conspiracy theory. She wrote a November 17, 2018, Facebook post -- which is no longer available online -- in which she said that she was speculating “because there are too many coincidences to ignore” regarding the fire, including that then-California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) wanted to build the high-speed rail project and “oddly there are all these people who have said they saw what looked like lasers or blue beams of light causing the fires.” She also speculated that a vice chairman at “Rothschild Inc, international investment banking firm” was somehow involved, and suggested the fire was caused by a beam from “space solar generators.”  Greene added: “If they are beaming the suns energy back to Earth, I’m sure they wouldn’t ever miss a transmitter receiving station right??!! I mean mistakes are never made when anything new is invented. What would that look like anyway? A laser beam or light beam coming down to Earth I guess. Could that cause a fire? Hmmm, I don’t know. I hope not! That wouldn’t look so good for PG&E, Rothschild Inc, Solaren or Jerry Brown who sure does seem fond of PG&E.”

Surveillance And Local Police: How Technology Is Evolving Faster Than Regulation (Fresh Air interview)
    https://www.npr.org/2021/01/27/961103187/surveillance-and-local-police-how-technology-is-evolving-faster-than-regulation
Your local police department may know more about you than you think. Journalist Jon Fasman says local police are frequently able to access very powerful surveillance tools — including publicly accessible CCTV cameras, automatic license plate readers and cell phone tracking devices — with little oversight. Fasman embedded with a different police departments across the country to see how officers integrate technology into their day-to-day job. Newark, N.J., for instance, uses a program called Citizen Virtual Patrol, which allows at-home viewers to stream video from cameras placed around the city. "It gives people an eye on the entire city," Fasman says. "I live about 50 miles north of Newark and I can log in at my desk and see the feed from any one of the 126 cameras that the new public safety department has placed around the city." Police departments say such technologies help reduce crime. But in his new book, We See It All: Liberty and Justice in an Age of Perpetual Surveillance, Fasman explores the privacy issues related to these tactics — especially as regulation varies state-by-state.
