Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a new public health proclamation on Friday rolling back all COVID restrictions on Iowa businesses. Effective at 12:01 A.M. on Sunday, the proclamation removes mask requirements, gathering limits, and restrictions on businesses.

A small Georgia city was still in shock Friday, days after state health workers raided the busiest medical clinic in the county and seized its Covid-19 vaccine supply because staffers had given doses to teachers. Some 470 shots of the Pfizer vaccine were confiscated from the Medical Center of Elberton, a private clinic that had been the largest provider of vaccinations in Elbert County, leaving behind just enough medicine to guarantee second doses to people who have already been inoculated. "Everything that we had tried to do up until now to vaccinate our county was just laid to waste," Dr. Jonathan Poon, who works at the clinic, told NBC News.

The cancellation comes a day after voting software company Smartmatic filed a $2.7 billion defamation suit against Fox News and three of its hosts — Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro. For most of 2020’s primary elections and general election, voters had to closely track changes in polling places and voting options, as state and local election officials responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. This ended up having a positive impact. Many Americans used vote-by-mail and early in-person alternatives for the first time, to stay safe and cast their ballots in what was the most secure election ever. The more convenient voting options also led to historic turnout, the highest in over a century. But some Republican politicians across the country see this expanded voter engagement as a problem to be fixed. Since the November elections, more than 100 bills restricting access to the ballot in 28 states have been introduced in state legislatures, according to a study from the Brennan Center for Justice. This is three times as many bills than were introduced in the same period in 2020, ahead of the presidential election. But of course, that was before months of election disinformation, viral videos, and “Stop the Steal” conspiracy theories spread by former President Trump and his allies, both during early-voting periods and after his loss.

The Virginia House of Delegates on Friday passed legislation abolishing the death penalty, which would make the Old Dominion the first state in the South to scrap capital punishment. Residents in the area directed police officers to a house across the street from the Goys' home, but as they approached the front door, a gunshot rang out, the officials said. Inside the house, police found 47-year-old James Spaide deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

A judge on Wednesday ordered corrections authorities to provide organic food to an Arizona man accused of participating in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol while sporting face paint, no shirt and a furry hat with horns. I first wrote about SPACs last August; they are effectively an end-run around the initial public offering process. A rich financier sets up a shell company that it puts on the stock exchange. Investors can then buy shares in the SPAC, even though it has no business and no products. They are often called “blank-check companies.” Within two years, the SPAC must use the money it’s raised to purchase a private company. The merger makes that private company go public, without having to do an IPO. If it sounds like an easy way for an iffy company to avoid all the public disclosures associated with an IPO and just get into the public markets quickly, well, that’s exactly what it is. SPACs used to be frowned upon, because what shady private company would have to shield themselves from disclosure to go public? And why would any investor sign up with a company that could tout its future profits, never show their work, and suffer diminished risk of future lawsuits about fraudulent hyping? But some of the biggest names in finance decided to embrace SPACs, as a means to gobble up startups. And now it’s gotten completely out of control, with SPACs trading higher even before they buy a private company. In other words, people are enthusiastically buying and selling non-entities, with no assets, no products, and no sales.
