A "Predatory" Stop-Sign Camera Is Terrorizing My Neighborhood | Defector
    https://defector.com/a-predatory-stop-sign-camera-is-terrorizing-my-neighborhood/
Gopalakrishna FOIA’d for information on the equipment being used by the city for its stop-sign camera setup and just how many tickets had been issued at that one intersection. He learned that the stop-sign cam’s sensor in Petworth, a Smartmicro UMrr-11 Type 44 Radar Antenna, had been recalibrated on June 5, 2020. A ticket boom commenced soon after. Data from MPD shows that in June 2020, the camera in question snapped 82 violators. Then there were 2,850 tickets in July 2020 (compared to 231 tickets in July 2019). Then the camera started flashing like paparazzi in Cannes: From August through November, a total of 17,216 tickets were issued. That’s $1,721,600 from one camera at one intersection in just four months.

Trump drives past jubilant supporters at impromptu rally in Florida
    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-florida-rally-today-latest-b1802625.html
After days of keeping an uncommonly low profile, former president Trump reportedly re-emerged to slowly drive past a rally of die-hard supporters in West Palm Beach, Florida on Monday. Video of the rally, which coincided with the President’s Day holiday, showed a raucous, largely unmasked crowd of supporters waving flags and Trump banners erupting in chants of “USA! USA!” as the former president’s motorcade drove by. A woman can be heard saying, “Everybody knows you won!” Others chanted, “We love Trump!”

Dangerous winter storm kills at least 11, leaves millions without power, mainly in Texas
    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/texas-power-outage-snow-winter-storm/
At least eight deaths have been linked to a dangerous winter storm system that’s breaking records across the country. Some four million homes and business in Texas were without power as of 5:15 Tuesday morning local time as the electric system struggled to meet demand, according to poweroutage.us. Among the dead were a woman and girl who were in an attached garage in Houston where a car was being run because the lack of power meant there was no heat in the home, reports the CBS affiliate there, KHOU-TV. Authorities said they suffered carbon monoxide poisoning.

Anti-Vaxxers Wage Cruel War on Pregnant Women Who Get COVID Shot
    https://www.thedailybeast.com/anti-vaxxers-wage-cruel-war-on-pregnant-women-who-get-covid-shot?ref=home
They are even tormenting women who had miscarriages—spreading misinformation, conspiracy theories, and hatred. Last week, Michelle Rockwell logged on to Facebook to see her face splashed across a post from someone she’d never met. Two months earlier, Rockwell had lost her baby in a tragic miscarriage, and the post—a collage of text and pictures from her popular Instagram—insinuated that the COVID-19 vaccine was the culprit. “Dec. 21 she got it,” it read. “Jan. 24th, she lost her baby. Another one.” The post was entirely inaccurate. (In her own Instagram post on the subject, Rockwell called it “bullshit.”) Rockwell, a family medicine doctor, had indeed received the vaccine on Dec. 21, but had miscarried almost a month before that. But that didn’t stop the post from spreading rapidly across social media, via pastel-tinted mommy pages and anti-vaxxer Instagram accounts like “cv19vaccinereactions.”

NYPD union head refuses to apologize for calling lawmaker ‘first class whore’
    https://nypost.com/2021/02/15/nypd-union-head-refuses-to-apologize-for-insults/
The head of the NYPD’s sergeants union — who is facing up to a two-month discipline over social media posts that include calling the Big Apple’s former health commissioner a “bitch” and a lawmaker a “first class whore” — has defended his actions and says he refuses to apologize for them. In a Monday letter to union members, which was obtained by The Post, Sergeants Benevolent Association president Ed Mullins declared, “I WILL NEVER BE SILENCED.” The Post previously reported that the Civilian Complaint Review Board police watchdog on Friday recommended a trio of charges — two for offensive language and one for abuse of authority — against Mullins for the social media posts. One of the CCRB’s recommended counts of offensive language against Mullins was in connection to a now-deleted tweet in which Mullins called then-congressional candidate and City Councilman Ritchie Torres a “first class whore” in September.

Pentagon report reveals inroads white supremacists have made in military - Roll Call
    https://rollcall.com/2021/02/16/pentagon-report-reveals-inroads-white-supremacists-have-made-in-military/
A Pentagon report paints a stark picture of white supremacist inroads in the U.S. military and reveals several steps under review to kick such people out. The report, obtained by CQ Roll Call, paints a stark picture of white supremacist inroads in the U.S. military. And it reveals several steps the Pentagon is now reviewing to kick such people out and help keep them out — from accessing an FBI database of extremist tattoos to improving security clearance questions. The Pentagon report said U.S. military personnel and veterans are “highly prized” recruits for supremacist groups, and leaders of those groups try to join the military themselves and get those already in their groups to enlist. “Despite a low number of cases in absolute terms, individuals with extremist affiliations and military experience are a concern to U.S. national security because of their proven ability to execute high-impact events,” the report said.

Electricity retailer Griddy’s unusual plea to Texas customers: Leave now before you get a big bill
    https://www.dallasnews.com/business/energy/2021/02/16/electricity-retailer-griddys-unusual-plea-to-texas-customers-leave-now-before-you-get-a-big-bill/
Some retail power companies in Texas are making an unusual plea to their customers amid a deep freeze that has sent electricity prices skyrocketing: Please, leave us. Power supplier, Griddy, told all 29,000 of its customers that they should switch to another provider as spot electricity prices soared to as high as $9,000 a megawatt-hour. Griddy’s customers are fully exposed to the real-time swings in wholesale power markets, so those who don’t leave soon will face extraordinarily high electricity bills.

Spanish police arrest rapper holed up in university
    https://sg.news.yahoo.com/spanish-police-arrest-rapper-holed-070325437.html
Spanish police on Tuesday arrested a rapper who barricaded himself inside a university after he was controversially sentenced to nine months in jail over a string of tweets, television images showed. Pablo Hasel, 32, had been given until last Friday night to turn himself in to begin serving his sentence after being convicted for glorifying terrorism, slander and libel against the crown and state institutions. At issue was a series of tweets attacking the monarchy and accusing police of torturing and killing demonstrators and migrants, with his case sparking protests in Madrid and Barcelona. But Hasel, who is known for his radical leftist views and whose real name is Pablo Rivadulla, on Monday barricaded himself inside the University of Lleida, in the northeastern Catalonia region, with dozens of supporters to avoid arrest. Spanish television showed images of police escorting him out of the university on Tuesday. "They will never make us give in, despite the repression," Hasel said, his fist raised as he descended a staircase, wearing track pants and a sweatshirt and carrying a duffel bag.

The FBI warned about far-right attacks. Agents arrested a leftist ex-soldier.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/02/14/fbi-arrest-left-wing-violence/
Shortly after sunrise on Jan. 15, FBI agents descended with guns drawn on a squat, red-brick apartment complex here, broke open the door of one of the units and threw in a stun grenade, prompting the frightened property manager to call 911. Inside the apartment, furnished with little besides books and a sign declaring “THE REVOLUTION IS NOT A PARTY,” the agents found their target: a 33-year-old U.S. Army veteran and self-described “hardcore leftist” who had posted a flier on social media threatening to attack “armed racist mobs WITH EVERY CALIBER AVAILABLE.” The man, Daniel Baker, hardly fit the profile of those who had been expected to cause trouble in the run-up to President Biden’s inauguration. After a mob of Donald Trump supporters invaded the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 in hopes of preventing Biden from taking office, the FBI had warned that far-right extremists were plotting armed marches in Tallahassee and other state capitals, as well as in D.C. But Baker represents the flip side of that threat: As a far-right extremist movement wages an assault on American government and institutions, experts say an unpredictable battle is brewing, fueling potentially legitimate threats of violence from the opposite fringe of the political spectrum. “It is ratcheting up and then getting a response and a back-and-forth,” said Steven Chermak, a professor of criminal justice at Michigan State University. Political violence remains far more common a feature of far-right groups than of those on the far left, according to law enforcement officials and data compiled by those who study extremist violence. Federal authorities have repeatedly described homegrown, right-wing extremists as the most urgent terrorism threat facing the nation.
