What fueled humans' big brains? Controversial paper proposes new hypothesis
    https://www.livescience.com/human-brain-evolution-prey-size.html
Single hypotheses for human brain evolution haven't held up well in the past, however, said Richard Potts, a paleoanthropologist and head of the Smithsonian's Human Origins Program in Washington, D.C., location, who wasn't involved in the research. And there are debates about many of the arguments in the new hypothesis. For example, Potts told Live Science, it's not clear whether early humans hunted megaherbivores at all. There are human cut marks on large-mammal bones at some sites, but no one knows whether the humans killed the animals or scavenged them.

Shed A Tear For Apple, For Nobody Wants To Help It Make A Car
    https://jalopnik.com/shed-a-tear-for-apple-for-nobody-wants-to-help-it-make-1846463277
Poor, poor Apple. The world’s richest company (it slides up and down, but it’s always hovering near the top) wanted only to find an automaker to be its dancing partner for its autonomous, electric car project. It probably envisioned the likes of Hyundai and Nissan would fall over themselves for the mere opportunity to contribute all their latest technology and manufacturing expertise to a vehicle for which they’d receive no credit in the marketplace.

The Secret Russian Car Dealer in Texas That Americans Couldn't Shop At
    https://www.thedrive.com/news/39680/the-secret-russian-car-dealer-in-texas-that-americans-couldnt-shop-at
Russian vehicles have never been widely available in the United States. During the Cold War, this was because the U.S. was wary of allowing the flow of economic power to the Soviets, and after the Iron Curtain fell, Russia's car industry was so far behind Japan's maturing auto sector that it had no chance of competing. For a brief period, though, Russian vehicles were indeed sold on Texan soil through a nearly forgotten dealer with a peculiar sales policy: No American citizens.

Satellite Imagery Shows Northern California Kelp Forests Have Collapsed
    https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/satellite-imagery-shows-northern-california-kelp-forests-have-collapsed-180977214/
The coastal waters of Northern California are changing. A decade ago, hundreds of miles of the rugged seaside were flanked by thick, swaying underwater forests of amber-green bull kelp that were home to fish, abalone and a host of other species. Now, those forests have been nearly wiped out by a series of environmental events that have been falling like ill-fated dominos since 2013. A new study using satellite imagery and underwater surveys is the latest to confirm that these majestic marine ecosystems have all but disappeared, reports Tara Duggan for the San Francisco Chronicle. Satellite images dating back to 1985 show that bull kelp forests off Sonoma and Mendocino counties have declined by a devastating 95 percent since 2013, and, according to the Chronicle, researchers are concerned the kelp may not be able to bounce back anytime soon.

Ky. Bill Criminalizes Insulting Police, Enhances Penalties And Jail Time For 'Rioting' | 89.3 WFPL News Louisville
    https://wfpl.org/ky-bill-criminalizes-insulting-police-enhances-penalties-and-jail-time-for-protest-related-crimes/
Kentucky Sen. Danny Carroll says he watched Louisville protesters insult and taunt police last summer and decided officers needed the ability to arrest them for it. The former assistant police chief of Paducah says Senate Bill 211 isn’t designed to impede lawful protest, but to target protesters who “cross the line.” It would make it a crime to taunt police, but the measure, currently awaiting a vote in the Kentucky Senate, would do much more than that. It creates additional protest-related offenses including charges for providing supplies to rioters, and flashing a light at a police officer. It enhances penalties for protest-related activity requiring anyone charged with rioting to be held for a minimum of 48 hours. The measure would also extend legal immunity under the state’s stand-your-ground and castle doctrine laws to justify self-defense during a riot.

Why Channel 37 Doesn’t Exist (And What It Has to Do With Aliens)
    https://www.vice.com/en/article/dy8by7/why-channel-37-doesnt-exist-and-what-it-has-to-do-with-aliens
I’m endlessly fascinated by stories of the quirks that were built into the TV system where the well-laid plans of the system simply fell apart because it was asked to do too many things. Nearly five years ago, I wrote about one of them, the tale of how radio broadcasters were able to shoehorn an additional FM station into the radio because of the proximity of TV’s channel 6 to the rest of the radio feed. So when I was informed that there was another oddity kinda like this involving the TV lineups, I decided I had to take a dive in. It’s a tale that centers around channel 37, which was a giant block of static in most parts of the world during the 20th century. The reason for that was simple: it couldn’t fend off its scientific competition.
