Nursing homes are getting bought up by Wall Street and it’s leading to more deaths
    https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/22295461/nursing-home-deaths-private-equity-firms
A new study describes the human toll of private equity firms buying up nursing homes. When private equity firms acquire nursing homes, patients start to die more often, according to a new working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Private equity acquisitions of nursing homes is a pressing topic: Total private equity investment in nursing homes exploded, going from $5 billion in 2000 to more than $100 billion in 2018. Many nursing homes have long been run on a for-profit basis. But private equity firms, which generally take on debt to buy a company and then put that debt on the newly acquired company’s books, have purchased a mix of large chains and independent facilities — making it easier to isolate the specific effect of private equity acquisitions, rather than just a profit motive, on patient welfare.

Metakovan, the mystery Beeple art buyer, and his NFT/DeFi scheme
    https://amycastor.com/2021/03/14/metakovan-the-mystery-beeple-art-buyer-and-his-nft-defi-scheme/
Metakovan is also behind Singapore-based Metapurse, a crypto-based investment firm. Metapurse’s mission, according to its website, is to “democratize access and ownership to artwork.” The firm has been acquiring NFTs. It purchased Beeple’s “Everdays: 20 Collection” artworks for $2.2 million in December. Metapurse has taken Beeple’s multiple artworks, or NFTs, along with three virtual museums, and combined everything into a “massive bundle.” Would you like to invest in this wonderful package? You can. All you have to do is stock up on Metapurse’s new B20 token. The token distribution is something to pay attention to. Metakovan has 59% of all the B20 tokens. Why does he own the majority of tokens? As he explains it, that is to prevent any single person from owning more than half of B20 tokens—and snatching up all this wonderful artwork for themselves. The idea is to decentralize and democratize art, only Metakovan controls the token supply. What’s interesting is that Beeple, the creator of the artwork, is actually a business partner of Metakovan’s. He owns 2% of all the B20 tokens. I’m sure there is no conflict of interest here.

Clive Barker's director’s cut allows us more time with Nightbreed's creatures and ups their number, emphasizing that they’re only fearsome to those afraid of difference.

MAGA voters discovered a new home online. But it isn't what it seems.
    https://www.politico.com/news/2021/03/16/maga-safechat-falun-gong-epoch-476215
But the once-obscure social network, which touts its security protections and respect for free speech, is not just MAGA-friendly. It’s also a conduit that enables fringe groups attacking the Chinese Communist Party to speak directly to — and influence — Trump supporters, creating a "Star Wars" barlike atmosphere where AR-15 enthusiasts and a growing number of white nationalists can mingle with Chinese dissidents. According to a review of corporate records and online activity by POLITICO, SafeChat has close links to The Epoch Times, an English-language media outlet affiliated with Falun Gong, the Chinese spiritual movement known for its antagonism toward the Chinese Communist Party and described by critics as a “cult.” The Epoch Times saw its online readership grow fivefold, to 51 million monthly visitors to its website, during Trump’s time in the White House.

Ancient Plants Buried a Mile Under Greenland's Ice Are a Grim Warning From The Past
    https://www.sciencealert.com/preserved-plant-matter-has-been-discovered-buried-beneath-the-greenland-ice
This means the region melted entirely, and stayed melted long enough for cosmic rays to form those isotopes, and for vegetation to grow and take them up, with moss and maybe even trees thriving. Radiocarbon dating and luminescence dating - estimating the time since the sediment was last exposed to light - placed that melting to within the last million years.

Cricut Now Wants Users to Pay Extra for Unlimited Use of the Cutting Machines They Already Own
    https://gizmodo.com/cricut-now-wants-users-to-pay-extra-for-unlimited-use-o-1846477745
Over the weekend, people who own Cricut’s crafting machines—which are printer-like devices that can precisely slice up documents—learned of an upcoming update that will limit how often they can use the machines they’ve paid for. The company, whose cheapest machine is $180, will now start charging users a monthly subscription for unlimited printing, which prior to now had been free. Using the Cricut machines requires the use of the company’s proprietary Design Space software for desktop PCs and mobile devices. It allows designs to be imported from other software programs, like Adobe Illustrator, and arranged to maximize the use of a piece of paper. Some of the fancier paper stocks that work with the Cricut can be expensive. Design Space also allows custom artwork to be created from scratch using a giant library of downloadable fonts, graphics, and patterns—some of which are free, most of which are not. As we pointed out in our review of the Cricut Joy last year, not only can crafting with the machines get expensive if you rely on the company’s designs, but everything has to be processed through the Design Space software before cutting instructions are sent to the machines. Until this past weekend, the extra step was a minor inconvenience, but now the company has promised a future update to the software that sounds a little unfair to users who’ve already paid for the hardware.
