The worst nightmare of the oil and gas industry has come true: environmental groups are using satellites to observe and report greenhouse gas emissions from their well pads. The Environmental Defense Fund, Harvard University, Georgia Tech and the SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research used a European Space Agency detector to take 200,000 readings across the 61,000 square-mile Permian Basin. The average rate of methane emissions had recently doubled, according to data published in the journal Science Advances. Methane is a far more damaging greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Well operators release it while drilling and completing a well, but it also leaks from malfunctioning equipment. Some environmentalists want to ban new natural gas wells because the industry does not control methane leaks. EDF’s data paint drillers in a poor light. “These are the highest emissions ever measured from a major U.S. oil and gas basin. There’s so much methane escaping from Permian oil and gas operations that it nearly triples the 20-year climate impact of burning the gas they’re producing,” co-author Dr. Steven Hamburg, chief scientist at EDF, said while describing data collected between May 2018 and March 2019.

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration has disclosed a set of rules secretly issued by President Donald Trump in 2017 for counterterrorism “direct action” operations — like drone strikes and commando raids outside conventional war zones — which the White House has suspended as it weighs whether and how to tighten the guidelines. While the Biden administration censored some passages, the visible portions show that in the Trump era, commanders in the field were given latitude to make decisions about attacks so long as they fit within broad sets of “operating principles,” including that there should be “near certainty” that civilians “will not be injured or killed in the course of operations.” At the same time, however, the Trump-era rules were flexible about permitting exceptions to that and other standards, saying that “variations” could be made “where necessary” so long as certain bureaucratic procedures were followed in approving them.

New DNA testing that was completed four years after the State of Arkansas executed Ledell Lee for the 1993 murder of Debra Reese was released on Friday. In January 2020, the Innocence Project and ACLU requested new DNA testing in Lee's case. Attorneys said that no physical evidence connected Lee to the murder and there were "serious flaws in the evidence to convict Lee." The testing concluded that Lee's DNA was not on the wooden club or a bloody shirt found at the scene.

There’s an iceberg-like quality to media manipulation and disinformation campaigns. What you can see is dramatic - but it’s a small fraction of the whole. Many media manipulators and trolls use the chaos and murky nature of big platforms as cover to spread falsehoods. Erin Gallagher’s work helps me see the big picture. Gallagher is a Research Assistant with the Technology and Social Change Project at the Shorenstein Center. Her work specializes in visually mapping the way that information travels across social media, especially Twitter. When I first came across her research in 2017, she’d been examining hashtags from specific news events and trying to chart how trolls and far right influencers were pushing viral propaganda. The era of mass vaccinations is ending: Although these big sites were key to speeding up vaccinations after a rocky start in the winter, many are beginning to find themselves idle as the country’s daily vaccination rate falls from its mid-April peak. “We are running out of eager, enthusiastic people who will chase down the vaccine wherever we put it,” says Kelly Moore, the deputy director of the nonprofit Immunization Action Coalition. But with more than half of Americans still unvaccinated, the COVID-19 immunization campaign is far from over. It is now entering a new phase. Instead of in convention centers and arenas, shots will be distributed across a larger number of smaller sites: pharmacies, doctors’ offices, churches, mosques, factory parking lots, barbershops, bars, breweries, even individual homes. This more tailored phase of the vaccination campaign introduces a new set of challenges, but by making vaccination as easy as possible, public-health officials hope to reach those who are hesitant, busy, or simply indifferent. To inch closer to the goal of vaccinating the whole population, the vaccines will have to go to the people, rather than requiring the people to go to the vaccines.
