New Japanese TV Drama About Manga Fan Who Loves Shipping
    https://kotaku.com/new-japanese-tv-drama-about-manga-fan-who-loves-shippin-1846939460
Baki The Grappler is a manga (and anime, pictured) about dudes beating the crap out of each other in an underground material arts tournament. In 2019, sociologist Junko Kaneda wrote a book about viewing it through a Boys’ Love lens. It’s now being adapted into a live-action TV series in Japan. Boys’ Love (BL) manga depict homoerotic relationships, and the genre is best known as “yaoi” outside Japan. Baki isn’t BL per se, but with shipping, dreams become real. Thank goodness for that! The name of the original book, which translates as Diary of a Girl Who Spent 30 Hours a Day for 300 Days Thinking, ‘Baki The Grappler Is BL, Isn’t It?’ is also the live-action show’s title.

Leaked Emails Show Crime App Citizen Is Testing On-Demand Security Force
    https://www.vice.com/en/article/v7evbx/citizen-app-private-security-leaked-emails
Crime and neighborhood watch app Citizen has ambitions to deploy private security workers to the scene of disturbances at the request of app users, according to leaked internal Citizen documents and Citizen sources. The plans mark a dramatic expansion of Citizen's purview. It is currently an app where users report "incidents" in their neighborhoods and, based on those reports and police scanner transcriptions, the app sends "real-time safety alerts" to users about crime and other incidents happening near where a user is located. It is essentially a mapping app that allows users to both report and learn about crime (or what users of the app perceive to be crime) in their neighborhood. The introduction of in-person, private security forces drastically alters the service, and potential impact, that Citizen may offer in the future, and provides more context as to why a Citizen-branded vehicle has been spotted driving around Los Angeles. The news comes after Citizen offered a $30,000 bounty against a person it falsely accused of starting a wildfire.

California’s attorney general is fighting to keep the names of CHP officers who killed Erik Salgado secret
    https://oaklandside.org/2021/05/20/california-attorney-general-names-chp-officers-erik-salgado-secret/
Last August, the East Bay Times identified one of the officers who shot Salgado, Sgt. Richard Henderson. The newspaper noted that Henderson killed another young Latino man in Southern California in 2016 during a very similar traffic stop, and that the CHP sergeant is facing a civil rights lawsuit over the incident. In addition, The Oaklandside has learned that in 2017 Henderson’s girlfriend was shot and killed by five Long Beach police officers in front of his home, after he called the police on her. The Los Angeles District Attorney found no fault with the shooting by the Long Beach officers and Henderson’s actions leading up to the incident weren’t investigated by his employer, CHP, because he was off duty at the time. But Henderson’s involvement in three fatal police shootings in five years—twice as a shooter—raises questions about what else might be in his background, and whether the two other CHP officers who killed Salgado have similar controversial histories.
