A major explosion in South Los Angeles damaged buildings and injured at least nine people, including police officers, as a bomb squad was in the process of seizing more than 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks in the area. The blast damaged cars in a residential neighborhood and left debris on the streets, footage on social media showed. A truck that was apparently being used to collect the fireworks was also severely damaged, video showed. The Los Angeles Police Department said on Twitter that at the time of the explosion, its bomb squad officers had been handling thousands of pounds of fireworks in the area of 27th Street and San Pedro Street.

Reddit user u/DumGei wrote in a post on December 13, 2020 that he got DOOM to run on a Hard Drive article, and posted a link to this space you find yourself now. “It’s a surprisingly simple process to make an article and embed the javascript version of the game,” u/DumGei explained of his programming breakthrough. “I don’t know why no one thought to do this before. It’s really not even one of the crazier ones when you think about it.” The user went on to say that he enjoys reading Hard Drive pieces, “especially anything having to do with Waluigi’s massive hog.” This level of enjoyment inspired him to insert a playable version of DOOM into the base of this article, after somehow convincing the website’s editors to let him publish it, for him to revisit both his favorite website and video game at the same time.

Pesticide manufacturers that have long dodged regulation by the EPA now face billions in damages for causing cancer, brain damage, and Parkinson’s disease. Lianne Sheppard was sitting in her office on a Friday afternoon when a colleague approached her with an old study on the safety of chlorpyrifos. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Environmental Protection Agency had used the study to set a safety level for the exposure to the pesticide, which is widely used on fruits and vegetables. But when Sheppard, a professor and biostatistician at the University of Washington, looked at the original research that was the basis for the paper and the safety thresholds that were calculated from it, she realized that the underlying data didn’t support its conclusion. “I tried to reproduce their analysis, and I couldn’t,” Sheppard said of the study, which was commissioned by Dow Chemical, the maker of chlorpyrifos, in the late 1960s. The research was conducted by an Albany Medical College professor named Frederick Coulston, who exposed 16 incarcerated men to the pesticide, dividing them into four groups — a low-, medium-, and high-dose group as well as a control — and recording their nervous system responses. The resulting paper, which was written by Dow statisticians based on Coulston’s data, concluded that at the highest dose the pesticide depressed the activity of cholinesterase, an enzyme necessary for neuromuscular function. Sheppard was able to confirm that finding. But while Dow concluded that the middle- and low-range doses had no effect, Sheppard found effects in both groups. She also saw how Dow had used the paper to help the EPA set an incorrect “no-effects level,” or NOEL, which is critical for calculating a safety threshold.
