‘The Steele Dossier Was a Case Study in How Reporters Get Manipulated’
    https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/07/steele-dossier-was-case-study-in-journalistic-manipulation.html
To pick the worst press failure of the past half-decade would be a daunting assignment, but the coverage of the Steele dossier would have to be high on any list. The document, penned by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele, was commissioned in 2016 by the private research firm Fusion GPS, in turn working for the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton. The aim was to dig up dirt on Donald Trump, especially regarding any ties he might have to Russia. Steele delivered, alleging a long-standing conspiracy between Trump and the Kremlin and offering details that proved to be as unfounded as they were spectacular: a meeting in Prague between Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and Russian officials in 2016, a collaboration between Trump and Moscow to hack the emails of the Democratic National Committee, and, most infamously, a surveillance video of Trump cavorting with prostitutes at the Ritz-Carlton in Moscow (a.k.a. “the pee tape”). Although they were almost certainly specious, these claims spawned countless news stories — including at New York — and prompted government investigations into possible ties between Moscow and Trump.

A Devastating New Documentary About Anthony Bourdain
    https://www.newyorker.com/culture/annals-of-gastronomy/the-haunting-afterlife-of-anthony-bourdain
“Roadrunner,” by the Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, presents Bourdain as both the hero and villain of his own story.

Documentary 'Roadrunner' Is Less A Portrait Of Anthony Bourdain And More A Petty Tell-All
    https://www.wbur.org/artery/2021/07/15/roadrunner-anthony-bourdain-documentary-review
Produced by his former employers at CNN, “Roadrunner” is an odd and unseemly movie, preoccupied with his death from its opening moments — old b-roll of Bourdain on a Bergman-esque beach saying he doesn’t want a funeral — and larded over with doomy foreshadowing at every edit. The film curiously skips the first 43 years of its subject’s life, jumping in after the triumph of Bourdain’s screamingly funny memoir “Kitchen Confidential” and focusing almost exclusively on the travel shows he hosted for the husband-and-wife team of Christopher Collins and Lydia Tenaglia (both billed as “consulting producers” on this film), who never miss an on-camera opportunity to lavish themselves with credit for his success. Increasingly petty and distasteful as it wears on, “Roadrunner” becomes less a portrait of a troubled genius and more a snippy tell-all about a television crew getting fed up with their mercurial star. I initially worried I might be overly sensitive because of my enormous admiration for Bourdain’s work, so I watched the movie a second time and liked it even less.

Dutch crime reporter De Vries dies after Amsterdam shooting
    https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-europe-media-crime-shootings-4ebed8b64d0a78948cf844889f54e9fc
Peter R. de Vries, a renowned Dutch journalist who fearlessly reported on the violent underworld of the Netherlands and campaigned to breathe new life into cold cases, has died at age 64 after being shot in a brazen attack last week, his family said Thursday. “Peter fought to the end, but was unable to win the battle,” the family said in a statement sent to Dutch media. While the motive for De Vries’ shooting remains unknown, the July 6 attack on an Amsterdam street had the hallmarks of the gangland hits taking place with increasing regularity in the Dutch underworld the journalist covered. Two suspects have been detained. Dutch police said the suspected shooter is a 21-year-old Dutchman, and a 35-year-old Polish man living in the Netherlands is accused of driving the getaway car. They were arrested not long after De Vries was wounded.

4 out of 5 Dentists Are Fighting Over Paul Gosar
    https://www.vice.com/en/article/z3xwqx/american-dental-association-pressured-to-extract-itself-from-paul-gosar
America’s dentists have their man in Washington. His name is Paul Gosar. And these days, Gosar’s open fraternization with known white nationalists is giving the self-described “Tooth Party” a bit of a toothache. The American Dental Association has donated over $75,000 to the Republican congressman from Arizona, a former dentist, since he was elected to Congress in 2010, making them his top donor. Over the years, Gosar hasn’t shied away from controversy, from joining the anti-government Bundy standoff in Nevada in 2014, claiming that the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville in 2017 was orchestrated by liberal philanthropist George Soros, or referring to Muslim men as a “scourge on society” at an event in support of far-right activist Tommy Robinson. Until recently, the American Dental Association, its political fundraising arm ADPAC, and the 162,000 dentists they represent, have been willing to turn a blind eye to Gosar’s controversies on behalf of “Tooth Party” interests. But Gosar’s latest antics are creating fissures in the Tooth Party—for example, his insistence that the 2020 election was “stolen” from former President Donald Trump, his involvement in the conspiracy-driven “Stop the Steal” movement that led to the January 6 insurrection, and his budding bromance with white nationalist live-streamer Nick Fuentes. Some prominent dentists have called on the American Dental Association to cut Gosar off financially, while others have rushed to his defense.

Angry White Parents Are Once Again Winning the Battle for the American Classroom
    https://newrepublic.com/article/162976/critical-race-theory-fox-news-angry-white-parents
Classes are being canceled, and teachers are being fired, as “anti–critical race theory” fights are coming to a head in Republican states. But the viral school board videos are only part of the story. The aggrieved white parent is perhaps the most potent reactionary figure in this country, and the American classroom is a common scene of their aggrievement, waging battles against school desegregation and leading efforts fighting the teaching of evolution. It is, much like the Tea Party, a movement that is animated simultaneously by grassroots energy, anger, and resentment and fueled from the top, dynamics that feed off one another in a vicious loop. One might think one’s seeing the true face of these laws in school board videos gone viral—angry white parents demanding redress for their children—but that’s only a partial view. According to reporting by NBC News, both the American Legislative Exchange Council and the Heritage Foundation have been training up this new generation of right-wing activist parents, with the latter hosting at least one gathering of state lawmakers and activist parents to discuss model legislation. Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, whose family foundation has long poured money into efforts attacking public education and unions, has lately used the furor over critical race theory to promote her anti–public education agenda. “Americans should continue to declare independence from the monopoly of government-run, union-controlled schools,” DeVos wrote recently in an op-ed.
