Facebook sent flawed data to misinformation researchers
    https://www.nytimes.com/live/2020/2020-election-misinformation-distortions#facebook-sent-flawed-data-to-misinformation-researchers
Several researchers on the call complained that they had lost months of work because of the error, the people on the call said. One researcher said doctoral degrees were at risk because of the mistake, while another expressed concern that Facebook was either negligent or, worse, actively undermining the research. “From a human point of view, there were 47 people on that call today and every single one of those projects is at risk, and some are completely destroyed,” Megan Squire, one of the researchers, said in an interview after the call.

Rudy Giuliani associate Igor Fruman pleads guilty to soliciting foreign campaign contributions
    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/10/rudy-giuliani-associate-igor-fruman-set-to-plead-guilty-in-court.html
But in court Friday, he agreed to plead guilty only to a single count related to soliciting U.S. campaign contributions from a foreign national as part of what prosecutors said was a bid to get state-issued recreational marijuana business licenses for a cannabis venture that ultimately never got off the ground. Fruman said the money was solicited from a foreign businessman who was interested in investing in the cannabis company that Fruman and others were pursuing. The campaign donations were earmarked for government officials, both Republican and Democrat, in states moving to legalize marijuana.

Apple fires senior engineering program manager Ashley Gjøvik for allegedly leaking information
    https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/9/22666049/apple-fires-senior-engineering-program-manager-ashley-gjovik-for-allegedly-leaking-information
Gjøvik says she’s been preparing for this day for months. Apple has fired senior engineering program manager Ashley Gjøvik for allegedly violating the company’s rules against leaking confidential information. For months, Gjøvik has been tweeting openly about allegations of harassment, surveillance, and workplace safety. “When I began raising workplace safety concerns in March, and nearly immediately faced retaliation and intimidation, I started preparing myself for something exactly like this to happen,” she says. “I’m disappointed that a company I have loved since I was a little girl would treat their employees this way.” Gjøvik has raised concerns that her office is in an Apple building located on a superfund site, meaning it requires special oversight due to historical waste contamination. She also says that she faced harassment and bullying from her manager and members of her team. More recently, she’s begun raising privacy concerns related to Apple’s policies on how it can search and surveil employees’ work phones.

FBI seizes Oath Keeper lawyer’s phone in "seditious conspiracy" investigation
    https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/09/fbi-oath-keepers-lawyer-phone-seditious-conspiracy-january-6/
The FBI is investigating “seditious conspiracy” charges related to the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, according to a search warrant served Tuesday night on a lawyer for the far-right Oath Keepers’ militia group. Kellye SoRelle, the Oath Keepers’ general counsel, tweeted Wednesday that the FBI had seized her phone. The action would seem unusual, since SoRelle is a lawyer who says she has provided advice to defendants facing prosecution or investigation due to their actions on January 6. “[T]hey have all my clients and my comms,” she commented in a message to Mother Jones. “[It’s] unethical as shit on their part.” SoRelle is close to Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, who has not been charged with crimes related to the siege of Congress, but who remains a subject of investigation and was with Sorelle on January 6 in Washington. Prosecutors have charged 17 Oath Keeper members with conspiring to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s electoral victory; Rhodes is not named, but is identifiable as “PERSON ONE” in court documents detailing his extensive online and phone communications with Oath Keeper members ahead of and during the siege of Congress. FBI agents seized Rhodes’ phone in May as part of their investigation. Rhodes had stated previously that he believes he may “go to jail” over the events of January 6, but he denies wrongdoing and has accused prosecutors of trying to build a false case against him and fellow Oath Keepers. SoRelle suggested on Twitter that the seizure of her phone was a part of a baroque conspiracy connected to her interest in “deep state ties” to Mike Lindell, the “MyPillow guy” famous for promoting that false theory that Trump was robbed of a 2020 election victory by Chinese hackers and Democratic Party officials. There is no evidence agents were interested in SoRelle’s views on Lindell. Instead, according to the search warrant, an image of which SoRelle provided to Mother Jones, the phone seizure is about suspected crimes connected to January 6. The warrant says the search is related to potential violations of nine criminal statutes: Those include crimes with which many people who entered the Capitol have been charged, from destruction of government property to trespassing and obstruction of Congress. The agents are also seeking evidence of false statements and obstruction of justice, including destruction of evidence, the warrant says. Notably, the warrant also lists “seditious conspiracy” among the suspected crimes.

Why the world still loves 1970s detective show Columbo
    https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20210909-why-the-world-still-loves-1970s-detective-show-columbo
The show was syndicated across 44 countries, resulting in some unusual tributes: there is a statue of Columbo in Budapest; in Romania, Columbo was so popular that when the show ended, the government asked Falk to video an address to the nation to confirm that it wasn't the regime's strict import restrictions that were responsible for the lack of new episodes.

Ex-Marines in neo-Nazi terror cell planned to attack power grid as precursor to assassination campaign
    https://www.rawstory.com/power-grid/
A neo-Nazi terror cell enmeshed in the US Marine Corps made plans to attack the power grid last fall, hoping to set the stage to carry out assassinations in their quest to create a white ethno-state, according to a new indictment issued last month. Arrests in the government's takedown of the terror cell, whose members called themselves "BSN," began in October 2020, starting with founders Liam Montgomery Collins and Paul James Kryscuk, and gradually expanding to include three others through June 2021. Collins and Kryscuk were initially charged with surreptitiously manufacturing and transporting firearms for profit, but in November 2020, a superseding indictment charged them with manufacturing and shipping firearms, including suppressors, "with the intention that they be used unlawfully in the furtherance of civil disorder." As has previously been reported, members fantasized about shooting Black Lives Matter protesters in Boise, Idaho in the summer of 2020. The most recent indictment, handed down on Aug. 18, adds a new charge of conspiracy to sabotage an energy facility. The purpose, according to the government was "to attack the power grid both for the purpose of creating general chaos and to provide cover and ease of escape in those areas in which they planned to undertake assassinations and other desired operations to further their goal of creating a white ethno-state."

Gov. Greg Abbott slams Biden administration over vaccine mandate for employers
    https://www.texastribune.org/2021/09/09/vaccine-mandate-greg-abbott-joe-biden/
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott blasted President Joe Biden on Thursday after Biden ordered large employers to require their workers to get vaccinated against COVID-19 — or get tested frequently to prove they don’t have the virus. Abbott — who has resisted making vaccinations mandatory in any form in Texas, going as far as to bar local governments and school districts from enacting their own vaccine mandates — dubbed Biden’s move to compel businesses with more than 100 employees to make their workforce either get the shot or submit a negative COVID-19 test result each week a “power grab.” The sweeping order would cover an estimated 80 million American workers. “The federal government needs to stop trying to run private businesses,” Abbott spokesperson Renae Eze said in a statement. “Texans and Americans alike have learned and mastered the safe practices to protect themselves and their loved ones from COVID, and do not need the government to tell them how to do so.”

Exclusive-Proud Boys leader urged group not to ‘turn on each other’ in riot probe
    https://www.reuters.com/article/legal-us-usa-proudboy-justice-idUSKBN2G51W5
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As four of his fellow Proud Boy leaders sat in jail this summer, charged with conspiracy in the violent Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, the group’s chairman, Enrique Tarrio, sent out a private audio message to colleagues around the country. In the July audio, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters, Tarrio said that “we are trying to f---ing avoid” a situation in which the senior members facing charges would cooperate with prosecutors. The four, who are jailed without bond, have pleaded not guilty. Raising the possibility that one of the four leaders may have been cooperating with authorities, Tarrio told fellow Proud Boy leadership he didn’t believe that the man was doing so – and said he had spoken about the matter directly with that leader’s wife.

Biden Asks OSHA to Order Vaccine Mandates at Large Employers
    https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/09/09/world/covid-delta-variant-vaccine/osha-vaccine-biden-mandate
New federal safety regulations that call for businesses with more than 100 workers to require vaccinations against the coronavirus will affirm mandates already in place at many companies and give cover to employers which had yet to decide. The proposed rules, which President Biden announced on Thursday, will require workers to be inoculated or face weekly testing and will mandate that the businesses offer employees paid time off to get vaccinated. They are the government’s biggest push yet to draw employers into a campaign to vaccinate the country. Some 80 million workers will be affected. The requirements will be imposed by the Department of Labor and its Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which is drafting an emergency temporary standard to carry out the mandate, according to the White House.

    Elizabeth Holmes’s Last Pitch
    https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/09/elizabeth-holmess-last-pitch.html
Within the deposition, Holmes tried a metamorphosis. She had ditched the black turtleneck that had as soon as been her trademark (one which she had lifted from Steve Jobs) and wore extra federal-investigation-appropriate apparel — a collared, button-down shirt underneath a jacket. Extra ambitiously, Holmes, who had been the face of Theranos, claimed that she had not, in truth, been chargeable for total swathes of the corporate’s operations — its gross sales power, its monetary projections, its pitches to buyers, or its relationships with its largest prospects, which, at one time, included Walgreens and Safeway. When requested about a few of the firm’s projections for its Walgreens enterprise, Holmes stated, “I don’t know what was behind these numbers and this mannequin.” On one other day, Holmes was requested about how different lab corporations drew blood and answered, “I don’t know what different blood corporations use,” seemingly detached to the notion that she would possibly really know what her competitors was doing. At one level, following a collection of solutions from Holmes on this vein, a lawyer for the SEC requested, incredulously: “So what have been you chargeable for?”
