Metrolink and Amtrak service shuts down south of Laguna Niguel to Oceanside because of ground movement
    https://www.ocregister.com/2021/09/15/metrolink-and-amtrak-service-shuts-down-south-of-laguna-niguel-to-oceanside-because-of-ground-movement/
Emergency repairs are expected to halt service from Sept. 16 through Oct 3. Sand erosion and bluff instability has been a hot topic in recent years, with strong surf and high tides causing damage to coastlines as the sea batters the land. This week, a major swell brought massive waves, which combined with a 5.5-foot high tide to push the water toward shore. In that area, the track runs very close to the shoreline.

General Sherman tree undamaged by KNP blaze; Windy Fire burns into sequoia groves to the south
    https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Wildfire-reaches-foil-wrapped-trees-in-Giant-16469878.php
The world’s largest tree, the General Sherman in Sequoia National Park, was spared direct fire damage as the KNP Complex blaze swept into the park’s beloved Giant Forest over the weekend, while flames from the Windy Fire burned into other sequoia groves on Sierra Nevada slopes to the south and threatened Tulare County homes, officials said Sunday. Hand crews worked to clear the area around the General Sherman and set controlled fires to remove ground fuel and expand the protection area around the grove, Jack Owen, spokesperson for the KNP Complex Fire Information Office, said Sunday evening.

Senate parliamentarian deals blow to Dems' immigration push
    https://news.yahoo.com/senate-parliamentarian-sets-back-dems-001909237.html
Democrats won’t use their $3.5 trillion package bolstering social and climate programs for their plan to give millions of immigrants a chance to become citizens, after the Senate’s parliamentarian said no on late Sunday, a crushing blow to what was the party’s clearest pathway in years to attaining that long-sought goal. The decision by Elizabeth MacDonough, the Senate’s nonpartisan interpreter of its often enigmatic rules, is a damaging and disheartening setback for President Joe Biden, congressional Democrats and their allies in the pro-immigration and progressive communities.

Haitian migrants face tough choices in Del Rio amid crackdown at Texas-Mexico border
    https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/immigration/2021/09/19/haitian-migrants-tough-choices-crackdown-del-rio-texas-border/8411152002/
For Haitians in Del Rio and Ciudad Acuña, a sense of despair is settling in as U.S. and Mexico authorities cut off path to border and expedite removals. A mounted U.S. Border Patrol agent shouted commands in a tense encounter with Haitian migrants wading through the Rio Grande near Del Rio, Texas. As the Haitians tried to climb onto the U.S. side of the river Sunday afternoon, the agent shouted: "Let's go! Get out now! Back to Mexico!" The agent swung his whip menacingly, charging his horse toward the men in the river who were trying to return to an encampment under the international bridge in Del Rio after buying food and water in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. One migrant fell as he tried to dodge, others shielded their heads with their hands. After a few minutes the agents retreated, allowing the migrants to return to the camp, where over 10,000 are waiting for the chance to open an asylum claim in the United States.
