California 1st to require hourly wages in garment industry
    https://apnews.com/article/business-california-laws-legislature-gavin-newsom-4a5355a5643fc6571fc3291ace26cc48
California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday approved what he termed a “nation-leading” law requiring the garment industry to pay workers by the hour instead of for each piece of clothing they produce. Piece-rate compensation can be used to pay workers below the minimum wage, supporters said. The bill makes California the first state to eliminate piece work compensation, though there is an exception for worksites covered by collective bargaining agreements, and the first to create liability for companies that subcontract with the garment makers.

Grammy-nominated R&B and gospel singer Kelly Price, who made headlines Friday when reports surfaced that she was missing in the Atlanta area, broke her silence Sunday evening, saying she almost died from Covid-19. In an emotional interview with TMZ, the 48-year-old artist said she wasn't missing, but was recovering from the virus. "At some point, they lost me," she said. "I woke up some days later, a couple days later, and the first thing I remember is the team of doctors standing around me and asking me if I knew what year it was." When asked to clarify, Price said, "I died." It was unclear if she was vaccinated.

Danish Artist Takes Museum’s Money and Runs, Calls It Artwork
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-27/danish-artist-takes-museum-s-money-and-runs-calls-it-artwork
A Danish artist has pocketed 534,000 kroner ($84,000) in cash that he received from a museum to incorporate into an artwork and changed the name of the installation to “Take the Money And Run.” Jens Haaning had agreed with Kunsten museum, in northern Denmark, that he would borrow the money to replicate earlier work which displayed the annual incomes of an Austrian and a Dane. But when the museum in Aalborg opened the box that Haaning had shipped, the cash was missing from the two glass frames and the artwork’s title had been changed.

Tesla NDA Warns ‘Self Driving’ Beta Testers ‘People Want Tesla to Fail’
    https://www.vice.com/en/article/m7ezxq/how-teslas-self-driving-beta-testers-protect-the-company-from-critics
Motherboard has learned that every FSD Beta tester signs a non-disclosure agreement in order to be a member of the Early Access Program (EAP), a community of Tesla aficionados the company selects. This NDA, the language of which Motherboard confirmed with multiple beta testers, specifically prohibits EAP members from speaking to the media or giving test rides to the media. It also says: "Do remember that there are a lot of people that want Tesla to fail; Don't let them mischaracterize your feedback and media posts." It also encourages EAP members to "share on social media responsibly and selectively...consider sharing fewer videos, and only the ones that you think are interesting or worthy of being shared."

Facebook says it's pausing effort to build Instagram for kids
    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/27/facebook-pausing-effort-to-build-instagram-for-kids.html
Facebook, which faced sharp criticism from lawmakers and users for its plan to develop an Instagram for kids, announced Monday it's pausing work on the project. "While we believe building 'Instagram Kids' is the right thing to do, Instagram, and its parent company Facebook, will re-evaluate the project at a later date. In the interim Instagram will continue to focus on teen safety and expanding parental supervision features for teens," the company said in a statement. Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the app was meant for children ages 10 to 12. The pause comes after an explosive Wall Street Journal report showed Facebook repeatedly found its Instagram app is harmful to many teenagers. The Journal cited Facebook studies over the past three years that examined how Instagram affects its young user base, with teenage girls being most notably harmed. One internal Facebook presentation said that among teens who reported suicidal thoughts, 13% of British users and 6% of American users traced the issue to Instagram.

Goldman Sachs, Ozy Media and a $40 Million Conference Call Gone Wrong
    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/26/business/media/ozy-media-goldman-sachs.html
That’s what the Zoom videoconference on Feb. 2 that Ozy arranged between the Goldman Sachs asset management division and YouTube was supposed to be about. The scheduled participants included Alex Piper, the head of unscripted programming for YouTube Originals. He was running late and apologized to the Goldman Sachs team, saying he’d had trouble logging onto Zoom, and he suggested that the meeting be moved to a conference call, according to four people who were briefed on the meeting, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to reveal details of a private discussion. Once everyone had made the switch to an old-fashioned conference call, the guest told the bankers what they had been wanting to hear: that Ozy was a great success on YouTube, racking up significant views and ad dollars, and that Mr. Watson was as good a leader as he seemed to be. As he spoke, however, the man’s voice began to sound strange to the Goldman Sachs team, as though it might have been digitally altered, the four people said. After the meeting, someone on the Goldman Sachs side reached out to Mr. Piper, not through the Gmail address that Mr. Watson had provided before the meeting, but through Mr. Piper’s assistant at YouTube. That’s when things got weird.
