In ‘Rationality,’ Steven Pinker Sticks Up (Again) for Reason’s Role in Human Progress
    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/29/books/review-rationality-steven-pinker.html
Still, Pinker is troubled by what he sees as rationality’s image problem. “Rationality is uncool,” he laments. It isn’t seen as “dope, phat, chill, fly, sick or da bomb.” As evidence for its diminished status, he quotes celebrations of nonsense by the Talking Heads and Zorba the Greek. (Pinker is also vexed by the line “Let’s go crazy,” which he says was “adjured” by “the Artist Formerly Known as Prince.”)

How the Pentagon Leaned on Hollywood to Sell the War in Afghanistan
    https://www.mintpressnews.com/pentagon-leaned-hollywood-sell-war-afghanistan/278568/
HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA — The (official) 20-year U.S. occupation of Afghanistan has come to a close, with the military beating a hasty and ignominious retreat. The puppet Afghan government NATO installed lasted fewer than two weeks on its own, with President Ashraf Ghani fleeing for the UAE, allegedly with around $169 million in cash. If the occupation was so unpopular and weak, how was it able to last so long? The Afghanistan Papers — a trove of military documents leaked to The Washington Post — showed that high-ranking government officials knew that the war was unwinnable but were openly lying to the public about how it was going, all while NGOs and military contractors made billions. But documents obtained by journalist Tom Secker under the Freedom of Information Act and shared with MintPress also show that Hollywood also played a significant role, knowingly collaborating with the Pentagon to produce pro-war propaganda about Afghanistan, ultimately helping to artificially buoy public opinion on the unwinnable campaign. This typically included giving the Pentagon direct editorial control over scripts and even removing any anti-war content or scenes that would show the military in a negative light. In exchange, the military offered its human resources, its bases as locations for filming, and its wide range of hi-tech vehicles to be used in movies. This quid pro quo effectively turned much of Hollywood, and the entertainment industry more generally, into cheerleaders for imperialism.

Leaked Documents Show How Amazon's Astro Robot Tracks Everything You Do
    https://www.vice.com/en/article/93ypp8/leaked-documents-amazon-astro-surveillance-robot-tracking
Amazon's new robot called Astro is designed to track the behavior of everyone in your home to help it perform its surveillance and helper duties, according to leaked internal development documents and video recordings of Astro software development meetings obtained by Motherboard. The system's person recognition system is heavily flawed, according to two sources who worked on the project. The documents, which largely use Astro's internal codename "Vesta" for the device, give extensive insight into the robot's design, Amazon's philosophy, how the device tracks customer behavior as well as flow charts of how it determines who a "stranger" is and whether it should take any sort of "investigation activity" against them.

Can the Great Salt Lake be saved?
    https://www.sltrib.com/news/environment/2021/09/28/can-great-salt-lake-be/
The Great Salt Lake hit a record low this year, but it’s not the only salty lake that’s drying up. Utah Rep. Blake Moore, a Republican, teamed up with California’s Rep. Jared Huffman to introduce the “Saline Lake Ecosystems in the Great Basin States Program Act” last week. The bipartisan legislation directs the U.S. Geological Survey to “to assess, monitor and benefit the hydrology” of terminal water systems in the region, along with the habitat they provide for waterfowl and other wildlife. It would authorize $25 million over five years for the program, during a critical period where climate change is accelerating their decline. The Great Salt Lake is an ecological and economic engine, Moore noted in a news release. It generates $1.3 billion each year in Utah through the brine shrimp industry, mineral harvesting and tourism. More than 10 million birds use the lake annually to nest, feed and stage for regional migration. “But today, its water levels are at their lowest in recorded history, leading to a loss of habitat, decreased water flows, and air quality issues,” Moore said. “Unfortunately, saline lakes in Great Basin states are facing these same challenges.” Salty lakes have long been withering due to drought and human diversions, and the National Audubon Society has sounded the alarm over their loss for years. In 2017, the bird advocacy group issued a study that found more than half of the arid West’s saline systems have shrunk by 50% to 95% over the past 150 years.

    Bad Apple
    https://popular.info/p/bad-apple?no_cover=true
Apple does not want the public to think of the company only as a profit-obsessed manufacturer of iPhones, AirPods, and MacBooks. Rather, Apple would like to be viewed as a responsible corporate citizen that understands the urgency of action on climate change. In 2013, Apple hired former EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to head up its "environmental responsibility efforts." Jackson, now Apple's VP for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, released a statement asserting that "the urgent threat of climate change is a key priority" for the company. Jackson called on Congress and the Biden administration to take "urgent action" to pass "climate policies that quickly decarbonize our electric grid." Specifically, Jackson said Apple supports "the enactment of a Clean Energy Standard (CES) that would decarbonize the power sector by 2035." Given this stance, you might be surprised that Apple is part of a "massive lobbying blitz" to kill the reconciliation package and its Clean Energy Standard. Apple CEO Tim Cook sits on the board of the Business Roundtable, a group comprised of influential CEOs. Jessica Boulanger, a spokesperson for the group, told the Washington Post that the Business Roundtable was involved in "a significant, multifaceted campaign" to defeat the reconciliation package and will "continue to ramp up our efforts in the coming weeks." Last week, the Business Roundtable began running paid ads on Facebook opposing the reconciliation package. One ad called the legislation, which contains the Clean Energy Standard, "bad for Montana workers and the economy."

The Economy Is Back. Welcome to the Casino
    https://www.vice.com/en/article/pkbn4k/the-economy-is-back-welcome-to-the-casino
Now that the pandemic relief jobless benefits have expired for millions of Americans and the eviction moratorium was ended by the Supreme Court, we are finally beginning to return to a normal economy. That is to say, one featuring hunger, homelessness, and an increasingly large dose of gambling. At the beginning of the year, we saw mobs of retail traders temporarily bleed billions from Wall Street investors shorting GameStop by squeezing the stock and pushing its price to new, seemingly stable, heights. It was only a matter of time before the trend was replicated, with retail traders training their sights on more struggling stocks like AMC and Blackberry. The stock market's speculative frenzy, however, was neither the first nor last one of these “investment manias”, as New York Times reporter Erin Griffth called them in a piece earlier this year, which have consumed not just retail traders, but institutional finance and average folks alike across many diverse areas of the economy.
