Furries Realllllly Hate Lindsay Lohan's Furry NFT
    https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/lindsay-lohan-furry-nft-1235298/
But the real question is not why Lohan would auction off an NFT of her fursona. The real question is, what do furries think of it? “Flat D, perhaps even a D-,” says Colin Spacetwinks, a writer in the furry community. “It reminds me in a way of frequently insecure straight artists rendering furries: [diminish] and reduce furry traits so as to not ‘commit’ to what you’re doing. Ears covered, why? Feels like it’s avoiding animal traits on purpose.” Furry and aspiring game developer Tommo the Cabbit made a similar point, telling Rolling Stone, “It’s weird how there’s no ears shown since furry characters have ears shown on the top of the head.”

    Hucksters on Parade

How founders are depicted in their biographies depends on the relative success of the enterprise. The standard business tycoon profile has a trajectory, following the earliest stirrings of the founder through the on-the-precipice phase that exposes their pettiness, selfishness, and recklessness. This is where the books take a key turn. If the business implodes, the founders are scolded, denounced as liars and grifters, condemned for conning so many wealthy and important people. If the business thrives, however, the tone is respectful, with authors shaking their heads about the “wild ride” of a corporate savant, who’s only crazy in that way that visionaries are crazy. And yet all these founders are the same. Their biographers’ value judgments hinge entirely on whether they get to keep running their companies, not whether they’ve hurt everyone close to them and have ravaged society. By hewing to this narrative, the authors pen the equivalent of tributes to serial killers.

Being a cyborg is cool right now, thanks in large part to gee-whiz media coverage. But actually using a bionic arm can really suck.

An Interview with Chuck Palahniuk - Believer Magazine
    https://believermag.com/an-interview-with-chuck-palahniuk/
When Chuck Palahniuk didn’t show up for our initial Zoom interview, I assumed he was dead. Chuck is never late, let alone AWOL. Chuck is punctual. Chuck is clear. The subject lines to Chuck’s emails are declarative, to the point of him sounding like AI. The last three I received were, “Hello from Chuck Palahniuk,” […]

MIT Scientists Zero In on the Origins of Earth’s “Single Most Important Evolutionary Innovation”
    https://scitechdaily.com/mit-scientists-zero-in-on-the-origins-of-earths-single-most-important-evolutionary-innovation/
Fournier ran this model to estimate the age of the “crown” group of cyanobacteria, which encompasses all the species living today and known to exhibit oxygenic photosynthesis. They found that, during the Archean eon, the crown group originated around 2.9 billion years ago, while cyanobacteria as a whole branched off from other bacteria around 3.4 billion years ago. This strongly suggests that oxygenic photosynthesis was already happening 500 million years before the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), and that cyanobacteria were producing oxygen for quite a long time before it accumulated in the atmosphere.

The day before watching Suarez at city hall, I met with Keith Rabois at a coffee shop called Dr. Smood in Wynwood, a buzzy neighborhood north of downtown where much of Miami’s tech scene is coalescing. Rabois (pronounced rat-BOY), who wore a polo shirt and lightweight slacks, is a partner at Peter Thiel’s $6 billion venture outfit, Founders Fund.

Intercity Bus Service Gets No Respect from Government

Its ridership is twice the size of Amtrak, yet there is little in the way of public support to help bus travel get through COVID. As the once popular mode of transit continues to decline, some states are taking notice.

Alex Jones Just Lost 2 Sandy Hook Cases
    https://www.huffpost.com/entry/alex-jones-lost-two-sandy-hook-cases_n_61561020e4b008640eb1d56a
Infowars host Alex Jones has lost two of several lawsuits filed against him by relatives of Sandy Hook victims after he routinely failed to comply with requests to produce documents related to his involvement in spreading lies about the deadly shooting. Judge Maya Guerra Gamble on Monday issued her ruling for default judgments against Jones in two different cases, which means he and the conspiracy-theory-spewing outlet Infowars have been found liable for all damages and a jury will now be convened to determine how much he will owe the plaintiffs. The new rulings became public Thursday. In the filings, Gamble eviscerated Jones and reasoned that default judgments should be ordered because “an escalating series of judicial admonishments, monetary penalties, and non-dispositive sanctions have all been ineffective at deterring the abuse,” caused by Jones’ unwillingness to turn over documents related to the cases, the Texas judge ruled.

18-hour days and panic attacks: Former Ozy staffers allege an abusive environment
    https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/30/media/ozy-work-culture/index.html
Around midnight one Saturday late last year, Eva Rodriguez, 24, had trouble breathing. She lost her vision, started sweating and felt a sharp pain in her stomach. She worried she was having a heart attack. For two weeks leading up to that night, Rodriguez said recently, she had been working roughly 18 hours a day every day to create the branding for "The Carlos Watson Show," a talk show named for and hosted by the CEO of Ozy Media. As a creative director at Ozy, for which she'd worked since 2017, she was used to working long hours to accomplish difficult tasks with little lead time. But this was worse. The good news was that it was not a heart attack; ER doctors in Chula Vista, California told her later that Sunday morning it was a panic attack. But it had been bad enough that she needed to take a couple days off work. "I felt so helpless because I desperately needed to sleep and take time off, but Carlos had expressed how critical my role is to the show," Rodriguez told CNN Business. "And if I didn't do this, the show cannot go on."

Lil Nas X Will Be First Artist to Drop Official TikTok NFTs
    https://variety.com/2021/digital/news/lil-nas-x-official-tiktok-nfts-1235077960/
TikTok’s first officially minted in NFT collection, “TikTok Top Moments,” will roll out this fall — starting with digital collectibles from Lil Nas X next month. The collection will feature six TikTok videos as one-of-a-kind NFTs and a series of limited-edition NFTs inspired by cultural moments from the short-form video platform. NFTs (non-fungible tokens) provide a way to certify ownership of digital content using distributed blockchain technology — essentially, they’re like virtual versions of physical collectibles like artwork. Lil Nas X will be the first creator to launch one-of-one and limited-edition TikTok NFTs, with artist Rudy Willingham, which will go on sale Oct. 6.
