Raiders Coach’s Emails Included Homophobic and Misogynistic Comments
    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/11/sports/football/what-did-jon-gruden-say.html
When the vaunted N.F.L. coach Jon Gruden was confronted with a racist email he had sent in 2011 to insult the head of the players’ union, he said he went too far but didn’t have “a blade of racism” in him. But league officials as part of a separate workplace misconduct investigation that did not directly involve him have found that Gruden, now the coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, casually and frequently unleashed misogynistic and homophobic language over several years to denigrate people around the game and to mock some of the league’s momentous changes. He denounced the emergence of women as referees, the drafting of a gay player and the tolerance of players protesting during the playing of the national anthem, according to emails reviewed by The New York Times. Now, he is planning to leave the team, according to reports by the NFL Network and ESPN, which cut into its broadcast of “Monday Night Football” during the first half on Monday night to say that Gruden would no longer coach the Raiders. Gruden’s messages were sent to Bruce Allen, the former president of the Washington Football Team, and others, while he was working for ESPN as a color analyst during “Monday Night Football,” the sports network’s weekly prime-time telecast of N.F.L. games. In the emails, Gruden called the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, a “faggot” and a “clueless anti football pussy” and said that Goodell should not have pressured Jeff Fisher, then the coach of the Rams, to draft “queers,” a reference to Michael Sam, a gay player chosen by the team in 2014. In numerous emails during a seven-year period ending in early 2018, Gruden criticized Goodell and the league for trying to reduce concussions and said that Eric Reid, a player who had demonstrated during the playing of the national anthem, should be fired. In several instances, Gruden used a homophobic slur to refer to Goodell and offensive language to describe some N.F.L. owners, coaches and journalists who cover the league.

Driver in NY Crash That Killed 5 Hit 106 MPH Seconds Before Impact, Probe Finds
    https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/driver-in-ny-crash-that-killed-5-hit-106-mph-seconds-before-impact-probe-finds-ny-only/3313638
The driver that slammed head-on into an Uber vehicle as it sped around a Long Island corner over the summer, killing himself and four other people, hit a top speed of 106 mph just 3 1/2 seconds before impact, investigators said Friday. Justin Mendez, a 22-year-old from Brookhaven, was behind the wheel of that Nissan Maxima when it veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on with the Uber, a Toyota Prius, on Montauk Highway in Quogue Village late on July 24. He died at a hospital. Four passengers in his car, two brothers in their 20s, a 32-year-old man from Bay Shore and a 25-year-old man from Manhasset, died at the scene. A fifth passenger, a young Garden City woman, was severely injured. Data from the black boxes of the Maxima and Prius were recovered by New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit members as part of their investigation. The box from the Maxima showed Mendez was driving at 86 mph at the time of the collision but hit a top speed of 106 mph just seconds before.

Trashing the planet and hiding the money isn’t a perversion of capitalism. It is capitalism
    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/oct/06/offshoring-wealth-capitalism-pandora-papers
In what was to become the classic boom-bust-quit cycle of capitalism, the Portuguese shifted their capital to new frontiers, establishing sugar plantations first on São Tomé, then in Brazil, then in the Caribbean, in each case depleting resources before moving on. As Moore says, the seizure, exhaustion and partial abandonment of new geographical frontiers is central to the model of accumulation that we call capitalism. Ecological and productivity crises like Madeira’s are not perverse outcomes of the system. They are the system.

COVID-Infected Allen West Goes on Unhinged Anti-Vax Rant—From Hospital
    https://www.thedailybeast.com/allen-west-goes-on-anti-vaxx-tirade-amid-covid-diagnosis
Right-wing firebrand Allen West on Sunday followed up the previous day’s news that he contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized with an off-the-rails Twitter rant against vaccination. The former congressman, who is not vaccinated, wrote that he and his wife Angela received monoclonal antibody treatments at an emergency room in Dallas on Saturday. “The results were immediate,” he claimed before noting that his wife, who is vaccinated, was allowed to go home while he stayed at the hospital due to concerns over COVID-related pneumonia and low blood oxygen levels. The far-right figure, who has increasingly adopted QAnon-adjacent rhetoric and recently quit his post as Texas GOP chairman, praised the hospital for “not forcing any harmful protocols on me” and for “making me grits for breakfast!!!” And then, despite the burden placed on hospital staff by people like West who refuse to get vaccinated, he pivoted to attacking vaccines. “I can attest that, after this experience, I am even more dedicated to fighting against vaccine mandates,” he tweeted. “Instead of enriching the pockets of Big Pharma and corrupt bureaucrats and politicians, we should be advocating the monoclonal antibody infusion therapy.” (Monoclonal antibody treatments, of course, are largely manufactured by pharmaceutical giants like Regeneron and GlaxoSmithKline.) West’s anti-vaccine rant included fact-free claims about the shot and somehow also found a way to fearmonger about migrants: “Instead of jabbing Americans, and not illegal immigrants, with a dangerous shot which injects them with these spike proteins...guess what? I now have natural immunity and double the antibodies, and that’s science.”

The Shadow Penal System for Struggling Kids
    https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/10/18/the-shadow-penal-system-for-struggling-kids?utm_source=NYR_REG_GATE
Some students told me that they were sent to Teen Challenge because their parents worried that they were gay. One girl said she was sent to a Teen Challenge in Disney, Oklahoma, because her family disapproved of her dating a boy who wasn’t white. Others were sent for forms of rebellion or distress that arose from childhood traumas. At a Teen Challenge in Kansas City, students were given self-improvement “projects.” A student with depression was told to carry a backpack with rocks in it for several days, so that she could feel how burdened she was by the past. Another, accused of being addicted to sex, was made to wear a belt attached to a soft weight, shaped like a belly, so that she’d know what pregnancy felt like. Quade Pike, a former student at the Teen Challenge in Disney, told me that nearly a quarter of the students in his program had been adopted from foreign countries. “What I saw was a bunch of A.D.H.D. boys who didn’t receive love from their parents,” he said.
