The owners of the Democrats’ big data firm have a side gig: working to elect far-right Republicans
    https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/10/owners-of-democrats-data-firm-targetsmart-worked-to-elect-far-right-republicans/
In US politics, data has become king. Firms that collect, analyze, enhance, and sell voter data—the information candidates and campaigns crave so they can effectively target voters—have achieved top-dog status in the elections industry. And one of the most important data outfits on the Democratic side—and, consequently, one of the more influential players in politics today—is a for-profit company that few Democratic voters, grassroots activists, or cable news junkies have ever head of: TargetSmart. It provides crucial services to the Democratic National Committee, state Democratic parties, and a wide assortment of progressive outfits and makes millions of dollars a year. On its website, the firm has posted a significant declaration: It “has always focused on the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates, and progressive organizations” and “does not work with Republican candidates.” But a Mother Jones investigation found that the owners and founders of TargetSmart also own a company that earns millions by helping to elect Republicans, including far-right GOP state legislators who have tried to overturn the 2020 election results, who were involved in the January 6 march on the US Capitol that turned into a seditious riot, and who have been part of the Republican crusade to skew election laws against the Democrats. That is, the parent company of this vital Democratic data firm is profiting by aiding conservative and authoritarian political forces that seek to defeat the Democrats and progressives supported by TargetSmart.

UNC, Duke professors get paid from $19 million settlement in alleged hiring scheme
    https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/education/article255247771.html
Thousands of UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University professors are getting checks from Duke as part of a $19 million settlement after a class-action lawsuit alleged the schools colluded on hiring decisions. The lawsuit, filed by a UNC-CH professor, alleged that non-medical faculty were paid less because Duke and UNC had a “no-poach understanding” that violated state and federal anti-trust laws. The plaintiffs accused the schools of agreeing not to hire each other’s faculty in order to “suppress the pay of Duke and UNC faculty,” according to the initial complaint... Regular faculty members will receive an average of $2,341.19 in compensation, according to the site. Other faculty positions, like adjuncts or visitors, will receive an average of $152.54.

The 2001 remake of William Castle’s 1960 film 13 Ghosts is far from a masterpiece, but it embodies everything endearing about the era’s horror offerings.

A St. Pete renter who was hastily evicted for a hotel expansion died while moving out
    https://www.cltampa.com/news-views/local-news/article/21157547/a-st-pete-renter-being-hastily-evicted-for-a-hotel-expansion-died-while-moving-out
Kelvin Washington was rushing to pack up his belongings and move to his girlfriend’s house when he collapsed on the floor of his St. Petersburg apartment. The 64-year-old was stressed and in a rush to move out of his place at the Stanton Hotel and Apartments—located at 211 3rd St N next to the Cordova Inn—where owners had given renters there a 15-30 day notice to move out. Washington fell yesterday, Oct. 23, just three weeks after his landlord gave all Stanton residents notice to vacate the building. According to the St. Pete Tenants Union (SPTU) which has been organizing to protect the renters, Washington’s neighbors heard a loud thud from upstairs when his body hit the ground. They found him sweating profusely. They called 911 and watched his body get carried out on a stretcher and taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Creative Loafing Tampa Bay reached out to the Pinellas County Medical Examiner to find the exact cause of death, but has not yet received a response. This post will be updated if a response comes in. Washington passed away just 12 days before his 65th birthday. Residents at the Stanton Hotel and Apartments, who are low income, mostly elderly and disabled, find themselves in a rough position with the last minute evictions, and Washington had taken a stand with his fellow tenants.

Men shot by Kyle Rittenhouse can be called ‘rioters’ and ‘looters’ but not ‘victims,’ judge rules
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/10/26/kyle-rittenhouse-trial-judge-victims/
A Wisconsin judge ruled Monday that attorneys in the Kyle Rittenhouse murder trial could refer to the men the teen shot in Kenosha, Wis., last year as “rioters,” “looters” and “arsonists.” They could not, however, describe Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, who were killed, and Gaige Grosskreutz, who was wounded, as “victims” because the term was “loaded,” the judge said.
