Dave Chappelle Receives Mixed Reception While Visiting His Former High School
    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/dave-chappelle-takes-jabs-students-former-high-school-1235053265/
In response to a different antagonizing question, Chappelle reportedly responded to the packed student body of artists with, “I’m better than every instrumentalist, artist, no matter what art you do in this school, right now, I’m better than all of you. I’m sure that will change. I’m sure you’ll be household names soon.”

A new Covid variant is no surprise when rich countries are hoarding vaccines
    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/nov/26/new-covid-variant-rich-countries-hoarding-vaccines
The result is that even now only 3% of people in low-income countries are fully vaccinated, while the figure exceeds 60% in both high-income countries and upper-middle-income countries. Every day, for every vaccine delivered as first vaccines in the poorest countries, six times as many doses are being administered as third and booster vaccines in the richest parts of the world.

Indian Tribe Accuses Feds Of Discriminatory Double Standard After Medical Marijuana Garden Is Raided In New Mexico - Marijuana Moment
    https://www.marijuanamoment.net/indian-tribe-accuses-feds-of-discriminatory-double-standard-after-medical-marijuana-garden-is-raided-in-new-mexico/
The federal government has generally taken a hands-off approach to marijuana enforcement in states that have chosen to legalize the plant. So why did a federal agency recently raid a small, home cannabis garden of a medical cannabis patient living on Indian territory in New Mexico? That’s a question that officials with the Pueblo of Picuris are asking following the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) raid in September. And the response from the agency, which falls under the Department of the Interior, has done little to clear things up. “Why is Picuris being discriminated against or picked on?” the governor of the tribe, Craig Quanchello, said in a phone interview with Marijuana Moment on Tuesday. “Why are we having to suffer the consequences of a rogue officer? That’s what we’re trying to get to.” “That’s the story we’re trying to tell, is for them to have some equality across the Indian country for tribes,” he said, adding that the tribe wants to know “what is that secret criteria that is needed by the feds to not bother us that everybody else seems to have except us?” While the 54-year-old patient who had cultivated the nine seized marijuana plants isn’t Native American, he’s married to a tribal member and lives on the territory, which itself is located within a state where medical and recreational cannabis is legal and people can grow plants for personal use.

'An Unacceptable Threat': Hawaii Groups Want US to Shut Down Military Fuel Tanks Atop Water Supply
    https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/national-international/hawaii-groups-want-us-to-shut-down-military-fuel-tanks-water-supply/2740895/
Citing threats to Honolulu's drinking water, the Sierra Club of Hawaii and other groups on Wednesday called on President Joe Biden and military leaders to shut down tanks that provide an important fuel reserve for U.S. forces in the Pacific. “Enough is enough. We've lost all faith in the local Navy command,” said Wayne Tanaka, the director of the Sierra Club of Hawaii, at a rally and news conference. The military built 20 fuel tanks, each the equivalent of 25 stories tall, during World War II near Pearl Harbor on top of an aquifer that supplies drinking water to one-quarter of Honolulu. The call to shut them down comes after a series of recent revelations about fuel leaks associated with the Red Hill fuel tanks or Pearl Harbor.

Low Fidelity: Adele, Record Store Day and Why You’ll Take CDs and Like It! - Decibel Magazine
    https://www.decibelmagazine.com/2021/11/25/low-fidelity-adele-record-store-day-and-why-youll-take-cds-and-like-it/
Plenty has been said over the last decade about how the independent music scene’s long-standing love of vinyl had kept the format alive when the mainstream all but abandoned it, only to have that get thrown back in their faces once the major labels caught wind of it thanks to the proliferation of social media and wieners in Red Hook with ironic mustaches and organic window herb gardens — and probably a fucking unicycle — splattering themselves with the records they more than likely only took out as show pieces during wine tastings. The majors then slowly returned, like an abusive boyfriend trying to weasel his way back into to your life once you’ve finally gotten to a good place, so that he can fuck it all up again. And the breaking point was the bricks used to pave the road to hell: Record Store Day.

Bulgarian holiday bus tragedy hits young nation
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59395495
Flags are flying at half-mast around North Macedonia, as the country reacts with shock, confusion and grief to the bus accident in neighbouring Bulgaria which caused the deaths of 46 people. Almost all of those who died were citizens of North Macedonia, a country of little over two million people. The government has declared three days of national mourning as people take in the scale of the tragedy - and wait to hear why a long-weekend coach excursion to Istanbul turned into one of this young country's worst ever tragedies.

    The Mess Age
    https://theap.substack.com/p/the-mess-age?r=1fwc7
Matt Yglesias, a newsletter author, spent time this past weekend sending around, for some reason, a list of campaign proposals the Democratic Party ran on in the 2006 midterm elections. This seemed to be part of a broader argument that Democrats now are worse at crafting winning messages than Democrats then. As you may recall, Democrats did quite well in the 2006 midterms and then won the presidency in 2008. The general idea is that these are the sorts of things Democrats used to say, and then they’d win elections, but now they only say things college-educated activists like to hear, so they lose elections. Thus, they should go back to saying the things they said in 2006. One issue with this argument is that, if you do recall the 2006 midterms, you will understand that it’s deeply silly to attribute the results to this Democratic messaging and even sillier to claim that a return to this messaging would lead to similarly sized victories. For one thing, as David Dayen pointed out, it is probably not very politically effective to promise to lower drug prices in every election but then not actually do it every time you win power.

Mammoth Tusk Found at the Bottom of Pacific Ocean Stuns Scientists
    https://gizmodo.com/mammoth-tusk-found-at-the-bottom-of-pacific-ocean-stuns-1848111748
Haddock and Prickett returned to the scene in July 2021, as they had only been able to retrieve a small portion of the tusk during their initial visit. Using ROV Doc Ricketts and working at a depth of over 10,000 feet (3,070 meters), they managed to collect the entire 3-foot-long (1-meter) tusk, according to an MBARI press release. Back on shore, the team was able to confirm the tusk as belonging to an extinct Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi).

A new republic is born: Barbados celebrates ditching Britain's queen
    https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/new-republic-is-born-barbados-celebrates-ditching-britains-queen-2021-11-24/
Barbados, a former British colony, will next week ditch Queen Elizabeth as head of state, breaking its last remaining imperial bonds with Britain nearly 400 years since the first English ship arrived at the Caribbean island. Barbados casts the removal of Elizabeth II, who is queen of Barbados and 15 other realms including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Jamaica, as a sign of confidence and a way to finally break with the demons of its colonial history.
