Tomlinson: Biden moves forward with Trump Medicare privatization plan
    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/columnists/tomlinson/article/Tomlinson-Biden-moves-forward-with-Trump-16583638.php
No one should be surprised the Trump administration hatched a plan to put private insurance companies in charge of Medicare. What’s shocking is how President Joe Biden is moving forward with it. The 50-year-old, government-operated health program for the elderly will slowly and irrevocably end up managed by for-profit insurers under the Global and Professional Direct Contracting Model. The Center for Medicare Services says the program will increase “access to innovative, affordable care while maintaining all original Medicare benefits.” Wall Street expects it will generate billions in new dividends for health care companies. Critics warn seniors will find it harder to obtain care, and taxpayers will end up paying more than ever.

Utah Makes Welfare So Hard to Get, Some Feel They Must Join the LDS Church to Get Aid

Utah’s safety net for the poor is so intertwined with the LDS Church that individual bishops often decide who receives assistance. Some deny help unless a person goes to services or gets baptized.

World’s vast networks of underground fungi to be mapped for first time
    https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/nov/30/worlds-vast-networks-of-underground-fungi-to-be-mapped-for-first-time
Vast networks of underground fungi – the “circulatory system of the planet” – are to be mapped for the first time, in an attempt to protect them from damage and improve their ability to absorb and store carbon dioxide. Fungi use carbon to build networks in the soil, which connect to plant roots and act as nutrient “highways”, exchanging carbon from plant roots for nutrients. For instance, some fungi are known to supply 80% of phosphorus to their host plants. Underground fungal networks can extend for many miles but are rarely noticed, though trillions of miles of them are thought to exist around the world. These fungi are vital to the biodiversity of soils and soil fertility, but little is known about them.

Polite, Legal, and Unacknowledged: The Devastating Biases of Well-Heeled Suburbia
    https://prospect.org/api/content/45b23e22-52d0-11ec-b004-12f1225286c6/
For decades, the typical narrative of racial exclusion and discrimination has painted working-class whites as particularly “deplorable.” It’s working-class whites who show up at Donald Trump rallies, filled with racial invective, just as they violently resisted school desegregation mandated by Brown v. Board of Education half a century earlier. But this story line has always ignored the ways in which upper-middle-income whites wield their own tools to discriminate—tools that are less vivid and less visible but no less effective. Exhibit A is exclusionary zoning, which outlaws the construction of duplexes, triplexes, and apartment buildings—housing that is more affordable for working-class families, many of them families of color—in affluent areas.

The Democratic Dilemma on Dark Money
    https://prospect.org/api/content/82682014-52e1-11ec-b2ee-12f1225286c6/
The suggestion that wealthy donors on the left never advocate for their economic self-interest doesn’t hold much water, either. The rapid demise of the ambitious and extremely popular redistributive tax proposals in the Democrats’ Build Back Better Act suggests who still has the ear of those in power. “This stuff is so opaque and no one is holding anyone accountable,” said one staffer whose employer works with the venture philanthropy funds. “The organizational landscape of civic and political organizations is just totally being transformed as inequality grows and rich people get uber rich and we are finding more creative ways to distribute their money.” The staffer, who works in progressive movement building, says the landscape is becoming “extremely donor-centric” in a way that no longer even resembles the industrial-titan philanthropic milieu they once knew. “We’re entering this new era of capitalism dominated by finance, tech, and insurance. The money is different,” they said. “We’ve linked our fates here to new powers within capitalism, and [how] that money is moved, aggregated, pooled, and filters down is really different than even several years ago, and it scares me a little bit.”

Magic dirt': How the internet fueled, and defeated, the pandemic's weirdest MLM
    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/magic-dirt-internet-fueled-defeated-pandemics-weirdest-mlm-rcna6950
The social media posts started in May: photos and videos of smiling people, mostly women, drinking Mason jars of black liquid, slathering black paste on their faces and feet, or dipping babies and dogs in tubs of the black water. They tagged the posts #BOO and linked to a website that sold a product called Black Oxygen Organics.

How a Centrist Is Completely Rethinking How to Get Independents to Vote for Democrats (stupidly or mendaciosly)
    rhttps://slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/12/liam-kerr-centrist-democrats-big-tent-welcome-party.html
Man with some kind of brain disease thinks The Dems need to add more centrism to the mix because AOC and Indivisible are the radical left. The moment that convinced Liam Kerr that he needed to get more involved in politics came in the lead-up to the 2020 election: Making sure Democrats beat Donald Trump seemed existentially important, but Kerr was worried that the party wouldn’t pull it off. To help, Kerr co-founded the Welcome Party, a nonprofit deliberately aimed at a big-tent vision for the Democratic Party. The group has no qualms about welcoming anyone in: “In the 2020 primaries, we welcomed the independent voters who stayed with us to beat Trump,” its website states. “To keep winning, we need to keep welcoming independents and ‘future former Republicans

"Moms For Liberty" says book about MLK violates new law banning CRT in Tennessee
    https://popular.info/p/moms-for-liberty-says-book-about
In May, Tennessee passed a law banning Critical Race Theory in K-12 schools. The state is already seeing the ugly consequences of the law. And things are likely to get worse.  While Critical Race Theory is not taught in K-12 schools in Tennessee, the law bans instruction or material that "include" any of one of 11 poorly defined concepts. A sampling: - "Privilege" based on race or sex - "Discomfort" or "guilt" based on race or sex  - "[D]ivision between, or resentment of, a race, sex, religion, creed, nonviolent political affiliation, social class, or class of people." Armed with this vague law, a Williamson County, Tennessee chapter of Moms For Liberty, a right-wing dark money group, filed a complaint with the Tennessee Department of Education. The complaint alleges that the language arts curriculum for second graders in Williamson County school violates the law banning Critical Race Theory.  Specifically, Moms For Liberty objected to the inclusion several books, including "Martin Luther King, Jr. and the March on Washington," and "Ruby Bridges Goes to School," an autobiography of the first Black child to integrate a New Orleans school, adapted for young readers.
