We have a powerful weapon to fight inflation: price controls. It’s time we consider it
    https://www.theguardian.com/business/commentisfree/2021/dec/29/inflation-price-controls-time-we-use-it
Today economists are divided into two camps on the inflation question: team Transitory argues we ought not to worry about inflation since it will soon go away. Team Stagflation urges for fiscal restraint and a raise in interest rates. But there is a third option: the government could target the specific prices that drive inflation instead of moving to austerity which risks a recession.

    https://www.newyorker.com/culture/annals-of-inquiry/ketamine-therapy-is-going-mainstream-are-we-ready
Lilly became addicted to ketamine: a researcher who crossed paths with him at the Esalen Institute, a retreat in Northern California, recalled Lilly spending most of his time in his Volkswagen minibus, where he was evidently injecting himself multiple times a day.

Studies Suggest Why Omicron Is Less Severe: It Spares the Lungs
    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/31/health/covid-omicron-lung-cells.html
A spate of new studies on lab animals and human tissues are providing the first indication of why the Omicron variant causes milder disease than previous versions of the coronavirus. In studies on mice and hamsters, Omicron produced less damaging infections, often limited largely to the upper airway: the nose, throat and windpipe. The variant did much less harm to the lungs, where previous variants would often cause scarring and serious breathing difficulty. “It’s fair to say that the idea of a disease that manifests itself primarily in the upper respiratory system is emerging,” said Roland Eils, a computational biologist at the Berlin Institute of Health, who has studied how coronaviruses infect the airway.

Scientists Find Ancient Hominin and Animal DNA in Cave Sediments
    http://www.sci-news.com/archaeology/cave-sediment-dna-10411.html
“With this approach it will become possible in the future to analyze the DNA of many different ancient human individuals from just a small cube of solidified sediment.” “It is amusing to think that this is presumably so because they used the cave as a toilet tens of thousands of years ago.”

“Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.”

Tesla Model 3 Owner Can't Get His Car To Stop Farting
    https://carbuzz.com/news/tesla-model-3-owner-cant-get-his-car-to-stop-farting
Tesla isn't a conventional car company, so when we learned that it was adding a feature that caused the car to emit a farting sound, we can't say we were totally surprised. Tesla calls this its "emissions testing" feature as a lighthearted jab at gas-powered vehicles, and although infantile, the feature has been a hit with owners.

DOJ: Police Shooting Family Dogs has Become ‘Epidemic’ (2018)
    https://www.criminallegalnews.org/news/2018/jun/16/doj-police-shooting-family-dogs-has-become-epidemic/
Cops in this country kill so many dogs each year that a specialist at the Department of Justice’s (“DOJ”) community-oriented program services office says it has become an “epidemic.” The DOJ estimates that around 25 to 30 dogs are killed by cops every day, with some numbers as high as 10,000 per year. The totals could, in fact, be higher, since most police agencies do not formally track officer-involved shootings involving animals. In Detroit, cops killed at least 25 dogs in 2015 and 21 before the first half of 2016. According to police records, two detectives had killed at least 100 dogs between them over the course of their careers. Meanwhile Metro Atlanta cops kill on average 50 dogs per year, and a Buffalo, New York, news channel investigation found that police there killed 92 dogs over three years, with one officer having killed 26 himself.
