Then I heard the distinct high-pitched fire control sound, followed by an awful screech resembling a modern-day fax or modem, that signaled lock-on. The last thing I heard was the Taiwanese pilot say, “I’m sorry. Goodbye.” That was the last sound on the tape. No bang. No boom. No sounds of explosion. Just silence.

    https://people.com/royals/prince-andrew-teddy-bear-collection-routine/
Prince Andrew's former maid is revealing one of the oddest parts of her job: spending an hour every day arranging his collection of 72 teddy bears. Charlotte Briggs, who worked at Buckingham Palace in the 1990s, told The Sun that she was tasked with the process of meticulously putting the stuffed animals in their place on the royal's bed and around his room.

Can you get long COVID if you’re vaccinated? Early studies offer clues
    https://www.sfchronicle.com/health/article/Do-vaccinations-protect-against-debilitating-long-16794986.php
Yet the study’s lead author, Dr. Claire Steves of King’s College London, noted that the vaccine doesn’t reduce long COVID to zero. So “when large numbers of people are affected, there will still be large numbers who unfortunately have long COVID effects,” she told The Chronicle.

The super-rich live on a different planet. Their thoughts on US salaries prove it
    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jan/22/the-super-rich-live-on-a-different-planet-their-thoughts-on-us-salaries-prove-it
Want another example of this lifestyle-induced myopia? Last year, the New York Times asked the eight New York mayoral candidates how much they thought the median sales price for a home in Brooklyn was. Raymond J McGuire, an investment banker, reckoned “it’s got to be somewhere in the $80,000 to $90,000 range, if not higher”. Shaun Donovan, housing secretary under Barack Obama and housing commissioner under the former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, guessed it “at around $100,000”. The real answer? $900,000.

Representation matters. We know this to be true. The past few years have seen an unprecedented push to ensure that everything — from movies to books to TV shows to dolls — does a better job representing the diversity of the human race. And now, let us turn our attention to candy.

Before Recent Wave of Train Cargo Thefts, Union Pacific Laid Off Unspecified Number of Its Railroad Police Force
    https://www.lataco.com/union-pacific-theft-police-laid-off/
News organizations both locally and nationally have been covering the rise of cargo theft in L.A.’s northeast train tracks in the past few days. Anchors on morning news have been quick to point out that there have been over 100 arrests, and even Forbes have been quick to point out the staggering $5 million worth of merchandise lifted. L.A. TACO first reported on this last November. Union Pacific, the train company, has gone so far as blasting L.A. District Attorney George Gascon for his policy that has enabled this rampant rise in theft. However, one major development that may be directly correlated with the rise in theft has continuously been left out: In September of 2020, due to pandemic-related budget cuts, Union Pacific laid off an unspecified number of employees across the railroad system. Including members of its railroad-only police force. Despite record profits in the billions in the last quarter of 2021. An anonymous employee came forward to L.A. TACO and says Union Pacific ‘should shoulder some of the responsibility instead of just pointing fingers.’

London’s Boris Buses reach the end of the road
    https://www.timeout.com/london/news/londons-boris-buses-may-have-reached-the-end-of-the-road-012122
The capital’s ‘Boris Buses’ may be permanently withdrawn from service because TfL is so short of cash. The ‘New Routemasters’ first ran in 2012 and were intended to have a working life of 14 years. But now the fleet of 1,000 buses needs a refurbishment and poor old TfL simply doesn’t have the money. The famous buses were introduced by the then-mayor of London – now our prime minister – and immediately became known as ‘Boris Buses’, in the same vein as Boris Bikes (clearly Londoners are obsessed with alliteration). They were meant to replace and honour London’s famous Routemasters, which were introduced in the 1950s and were still running well into the twenty-first century. However, the design, by Thomas Heathwerwick (Olympic Cauldron etc), almost immediately ran into problems. The new buses were huge and complex. Their eco-efficiency was questioned after it transpired that they were running their diesel engines far more than their hybrid design originally intended. Passengers complained of their stifling heat and lack of openable windows. They also ran a two-man crew of driver and conductor (since abandoned), so were more labour-intensive than other buses on London’s streets. Finally, there was the price. Each New Routemaster cost an eyewatering £355,000 – roughly twice the amount of a regular double-decker.

Monkeys Escape After Truck Crashes on Pennsylvania Highway
    https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/21/us/monkeys-truck-crash-pennsylvania.html
Jamie Labar was working at the front desk at a Super 8 hotel in Montour County, Pa., on Friday when she heard that there had been a crash on the highway nearby. “I thought it was just another car accident because there’s always accidents there,” she said. But it was not just another accident. The Pennsylvania State Police said that a pickup truck with an enclosed trailer full of 100 monkeys had collided with a dump truck and that four of the monkeys had escaped.
