City to help pay for home security cameras, which CPD hopes to add to its network
    https://chicago.suntimes.com/city-hall/2022/4/4/23010293/security-cameras-rebates-new-city-program-video-footage-chicago-police-lightfoot-brown
Rebates to cover their cost were announced Monday by Mayor Lori Lightfoot. They also can be used for outdoor motion sensor lighting and GPS trackers for cars. Homeowners will be eligible to receive “up to $225 per camera for a total of $450” in residential security expenses. “That means that, if you would like to purchase a $50 camera, you can purchase multiple. We know of a lot of associations and other places that have multiple entrances,” said Tamara Mahal, chief coordination officer for the city’s Community Safety Coordination Center. “You’ll also be eligible for certain subscription costs for the first year of cloud-based subscription. ... For lighting, you’ll be eligible for up to $100 per light. And for vehicular tracking devices, you’ll be eligible for up to $50 per device and up to one year’s subscription costs.” The city has budgeted around $5.3 million through 2024 for the rebate program, said Mahal, who did not reveal where the money is coming from. All subsidized camera systems will be registered with the Chicago Police Department as a way to increase coverage in crime-plagued neighborhoods and help provide inundated CPD officers with the video evidence they need to solve violent crime.

‘The Worst and Most Egregious Attendance Policy’ Is Pushing Railroad Workers to the Brink
    https://www.vice.com/en/article/5dgezn/the-worst-and-most-egregious-attendance-policy-is-pushing-railroad-workers-to-the-brink
Workers for BNSF, the nation’s largest freight railroad, say the company’s new attendance policy requires them to be “on call” 90 percent of the time. On January 10, BNSF announced a new attendance policy called the “Hi Viz” program that was supposed to improve upon the old system. Hi Viz is intended to “provide more predictability for our train crews while also providing more reliable crew availability,” according to a BNSF statement, “while ensuring that we have sufficient employees available to work.” In court filings, BNSF said the new policy would make it easier for workers to plan their lives and avoid discipline for excessive time off while also helping the railroad deal with the supply chain crisis by running more service. But workers, their families, and the unions that represent them not only disagree but speak of Hi Viz in apocalyptic terms. They regard it as a draconian measure that makes no sense except as an effort to get every BNSF employee to quit out of rage, depression, or ill health. It glues workers to their phones waiting for a call to go into work, provides little leeway for emergencies, and virtually assures workers will see their families for just a few hours a week. Dennis Pierce, the national president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), called Hi Viz “the worst and most egregious attendance policy ever adopted by any rail carrier.”

The Secret History of the Arcade Trackball
    https://arcadeblogger.com/2016/07/29/the-secret-history-of-the-arcade-trackball/
The trackball as a method of user interface control has been around for some time. In terms of public consciousness, I would argue that arcade games pioneered their widespread use by getting them literally in the hands of a mainstream consumer audience. The best way to get someone using a new device, is to put one in their hands – as daft as that sounds, it’s perfectly true. Up until the late 70s, trackballs had mainly military or industrial uses. A desktop mouse is essentially an upturned trackball, using what is fundamentally the same hardware – but although we take the humble PC mouse for granted now, we didn’t really see mass implementation and use of even those devices until what, the late to mid 90s? Trackballs go way back to the very early days of arcade machines and beyond.

Putin Had No Clue How Many of Us Would Be Watching
    https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/03/opinion/ukraine-russia-wired.html
In this war, which I think of as World War Wired... This has quickly turned into “the big battle” between the two most dominant political systems in the world today: free-market, “rule-of-law democracy versus authoritarian kleptocracy,” It is worth recalling that World War II put an end to fascism technologists Anyone with a smartphone and a credit card can aid strangers in Ukraine, through Airbnb, by just reserving a night at their home and not using it. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s government has been able to tap a whole new source of funding — raising more than $70 million worth of cryptocurrency from individuals around the world after appealing on social media for donations. god fucking shut up Friedman

No criminal charges for officers who killed Erik Salgado in 2020
    https://oaklandside.org/2022/04/04/no-criminal-charges-for-officers-who-killed-erik-salgado-in-2020/
The three California Highway Patrol officers who killed 23-year-old Oakland resident Erik Salgado and wounded his girlfriend Brianna Colombo almost two years ago were found to be justified in using deadly force, in a report released today by Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley. The DA’s findings mean that none of the officers will face criminal charges for the shooting, which happened against the backdrop of nationwide protests against police brutality. An administrative investigation by CHP might still result in discipline for the officers. And a civil lawsuit brought by Salgado’s 5-year-old daughter, Colombo, and Salgado’s mother Felina Ramirez is pending against the three officers and CHP.

Worker shortage thwarts Biden’s “millions” of jobs pledge
    https://www.axios.com/biden-pledge-workers-jobs-03b25795-7a4a-404a-8026-f0e616563f03.html
President Biden's campaign pledge to create "millions" of jobs has hit a challenge: finding workers. Why it matters: Job potential from building out clean energy and "onshoring" — bringing home — overseas manufacturing hasn't panned out or has been overstated. His words have been more political statement than governing result. Driving the news: Ten states recently hit the lowest unemployment rates they've seen since the Bureau of Labor and Statistics began keeping track of individual state data in 1976.

In one of the more bizarre wildlife encounters to occur in the Hawaiian Islands this year, Seiple was surfing off Oahu’s Kaena point on Dec. 19 when she spotted a dark-colored animal in the water. At first, she thought it was a Hawaiian monk seal, but as the animal swam closer and lifted its head, she realized it was something else entirely.

Rainbow flags may be confiscated at World Cup, says Qatar security chief
    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/ad408074-b1af-11ec-8570-b43daaf58ea1?shareToken=ada219a2f9f9770314ccee0a04758898
Qatar’s senior security leader has caused uproar among equality groups after warning that rainbow flags could be taken off fans at the World Cup “for their own protection”. Major General Abdulaziz Abdullah al-Ansari said that LGBTQ fans and couples would be welcomed and accepted in Qatar during the tournament in November and December, despite same-sex relationships remaining a criminal offence in the conservative Gulf nation. Fifa has previously said that rainbow flags would be permitted in stadiums but Ansari, the chairman of the National Counterterrorism Committee at the Ministry of Interior, said that there should be no promotion of gay rights.

In a stunning victory, Amazon workers on Staten Island vote for a union
    https://www.npr.org/2022/04/01/1089318684/amazon-labor-union-staten-island-election-bessemer-alabama-warehouse-workers
Amazon workers at a warehouse in Staten Island, New York, have voted to unionize, a first for Amazon, and a stunning win for a grassroots campaign led by former and current Amazon employees. The historic vote was 2,654 for the union to 2,131 against. Ballots were cast in person over five days starting last Friday. Roughly 8,000 workers were eligible to vote. The workers, who pick and package items for customer orders at the facility will be represented by the Amazon Labor Union, an upstart group formed by Christian Smalls after he was fired from Amazon in March 2020. At the time a supervisor at the fulfillment center, he staged a walkout over the lack of worker protections against the coronavirus. Amazon says Smalls violated safety protocols by showing up after he'd been told to quarantine due to a COVID exposure.
