US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) has built a vast digital surveillance system that gives it access to the personal details of almost every person in America, a two-year investigation by Georgetown University law center has found.
Researchers from the Center on Privacy & Technology on Tuesday released one of the most comprehensive reviews of Ice activities, concluding that the federal organisation has strayed well beyond its duties as an immigration body to become what is in effect a domestic surveillance agency.
Operating largely in secret and with minimal public oversight, Ice has amassed a formidable armory of digital capabilities that allows its agents to “pull detailed dossiers on nearly anyone, seemingly at any time”.
The vast mountain of data to which Ice now has access includes:
Driver’s license data for three of every four adults living in the US.
Data drawn from the utility records of 75% of adults, covering more than 218 million unique utility consumers in all 50 states.
Information on the movements of drivers in cities that contain 75% of the US population.
Facial recognition technology drawn from the driver’s license photos of at least a third of all adults.
The Georgetown researchers base their report, American Dragnet: Data-Driven Deportation in the 21st Century, on hundreds of freedom of information requests and a review of more than 100,000 previously unseen Ice spending transactions.

WASHINGTON (TND) — A Seattle couple has lived aboard cruise ships for the past year after determining it's cheaper than a mortgage — and they have no plans to return to living on land. Angelyn and Richard Burk — both in their 50s — have always dreamed of retiring to a life of travel, according to 7 News in Australia. The couple had been going on a cruise around the world at least once, sometimes twice each year.

Four companies sell almost all baby formula in the U.S., magnifying supply shocks that cause families to scramble.
Families are desperately hunting around drugstores and groceries for baby formula amid a nationwide shortage. Analyst Datasembly indicates that 40 percent of leading baby formula products were out of stock in late April. Yes, that refers to all sizes of the same product (it’s 40 percent of the SKU numbers, not 40 percent of all formula), but the problem shouldn’t really be minimized: Businesses are rationing and parents are scrambling, even if switching brands doesn’t typically carry any health consequences (though that isn’t always the case).
Why is this happening, exactly? Well, there was a large recall of Similac, one of the major brands, in February. But I am having a hard time with the alibi of another large brand, Enfamil, which has claimed an “18 percent surge in demand for baby formula nationwide.”
Was there a large influx of babies that I’m not aware of? Have they all gotten hungrier? Contrary to myth, the pandemic and the forced lockdowns did not lead to a baby boom; in fact, they led to a baby bust. U.S. births declined in the first half of 2021, the last point for which we have data. Even if there was an uptick later, it’s extremely unlikely to see an 18 percent surge.

I awoke this morning to the extremely sad news that our friend Howie Pyro had passed. The rocker, cultural historian, DJ, founding member of D-Generation, bass player in Danzig, and frequent Dangerous Minds contributor, had a liver transplant last year, but then sadly caught COVID just when everything seemed like it was on a (TBH very unexpected) upswing in his health. I was just thinking about him yesterday and made a mental note to write and wish him well. Then this. Although I don’t think anyone would have mistaken Howie for an angel—he wouldn’t have needed a liver transplant if he had been—everyone who knew him loved him, because he was just such a sweet man. Not that many people can be said to have been universally loved in their time, but I think it’s true of Howie. The first word that comes to mind to describe him is sweet....
