McDonald's fights suit over rape of 14-year-old girl at Bethel Park location by her manager
    https://www.wtae.com/article/mcdonalds-fights-suit-over-rape-of-14-year-old-girl-at-bethel-park-location-by-her-manager/40233569#
The man already convicted of raping the 14-year-old girl was her 42-year-old McDonald's manager, Walter Garner, who at the time of the assault was already a convicted child sex offender and on Megan's List. The lawsuit says the victim and other workers had complained about sexual harassment for which there was video evidence. "They saw him groping and fondling my young girl and they did nothing," Perer said. "So that is why we're saying, this is beyond negligence. This is punitive damages. This is outrageous, this is extreme."

    https://www.ksla.com/2022/06/27/5-people-shot-smith-county-trail-ride-concert/
Witnesses at the scene said a fight occurred near the concert stage, and one or more trail ride groups started shooting into the crowd, the press release stated. Private security personnel had been on hand and were collecting guns from attendees before they were allowed into the concert, witnesses told law enforcement officers. “Witnesses related that after the initial shooting that some of the groups ran to security and took their firearms back,” the press release stated. “Subsequently, a second shooting took place in that area.” After law enforcement arrived, a third shooting incident occurred near the rear of the property, the press release stated. “At this time, it is believed that all injuries took place during the original shooting incident as no new victims were located at the scene by law enforcement subsequent to the third shooting,” the press release stated.

BP Paid Rural Mexicans a “Pittance” for Wall Street’s Top Climate Solution
    https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2022-carbon-offset-credits-mexico-forest-bp/
In the coldest months of the year, thick fog blankets the mountain village of Coatitila in eastern Mexico, hiding the bulging, pine-covered hills that cradle it. At midday, the sun pulls back the fog to expose patches of blight where trees have been axed for logging or farm work. In 2019, Coatitila’s leaders thought they’d found a way to protect the dwindling forests and bring a serious change to a local economy where the average person earns only $6.40 a day when they can find work. One of the world’s most prestigious climate nonprofits, the World Resources Institute, was helping run a program that pays villages to reforest their communally owned woods and improve forestry management. Participation would bring in cash from oil giant BP Plc, which would ultimately purchase carbon credits that the villagers generated, along with further funding from a US government agency. After two years of work, the village got its first annual payment in late 2021. The pay, split among 133 members of the community, amounted to about $40 each, a fraction of what the village’s then-leader, Álvaro Tepetla, expected. He’d hoped they could earn as much as $44,000 in total per year, or at least match the $8,100 paid by a recently canceled government conservation program. The final sum was 30% lower and worth little more than a week’s work per person. The program is funded using carbon offsets, a financial tool that aims to fight climate change by turning carbon dioxide captured by protecting trees into a valuable commodity. Each offset should equal a ton of carbon absorbed thanks to changes driven by the promise of payment. BP, as the buyer of the credits, would be rewarding the community for its care for forests while acquiring an asset that could be held as an investment or sold to third parties and used to write off corporate carbon emissions. BP has found a carbon bargain in some of Mexico’s poorest areas. In more than a dozen places identified by Bloomberg Green, the oil company has bought offsets at an enormous discount, according to interviews with 18 people across three states and Mexico City who have been involved in the program or approached to join it. By paying $4 per offset to subsistence farmers in remote areas with less access to education and internet, BP has handed over around 15% of what others are now offering for offsets from Mexican projects. Facilitating the program has been WRI, one of the most trusted names in climate work.

Moroccan authorities accused of trying to cover up Melilla deaths
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/27/moroccan-authorities-accused-of-trying-to-cover-up-melilla-deaths
There are growing calls for an investigation into the deaths of up to 37 people who died trying to scale a fence to enter Melilla, Spain’s enclave in north Africa. About 2,000 people stormed the heavily fortified border between the Moroccan region of Nador and the Spanish enclave on Friday. The Moroccan authorities say 23 people died and 140 police were injured during the attempt, while several NGOs say the number of dead is 37. “I call for an immediate investigation into the matter and remind all countries of their obligations under international law to treat all migrants with dignity and to prioritise their safety and human rights, while refraining from the use of excessive force,” said Moussa Faki Mahamat, the head of the African Union Commission. “I express my deep shock and concern at the violent and degrading treatment of African migrants attempting to cross an international border from Morocco into Spain.”

LAPD cop was beaten to death by officers in ‘mob’ training, mom claims
    https://nypost.com/2022/06/26/lapd-cop-houston-tipping-was-beaten-to-death-by-officers-in-mob-training-mom-claims/
An LAPD officer was beaten to death by fellow officers during a training that simulated a mob attack, a new wrongful death claim filed by his mother claims. Houston Tipping, 32, died three days after an on-duty accident at the department’s Elysian Park Academy on May 26. Tipping was acting as a bike instructor in a scenario that involved grappling with another officer, LAPD said in a statement after his death. At some point, “Officer Tipping fell to the floor and suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury,” police said.  Tipping’s mother, Shirley Huffman, filed a notice of claim against the city on Friday, alleging wrongful death and civil rights violations, the Los Angeles Times reported. Such claims are often precede lawsuits.
