Bank of America Memo, Revealed: “We Hope” Conditions for American Workers Will Get Worse
    https://theintercept.com/2022/07/29/bank-of-america-worker-conditions-worse/
A Bank of America executive stated that “we hope” working Americans will lose leverage in the labor market in a recent private memo obtained by The Intercept. Making predictions for clients about the U.S. economy over the next several years, the memo also noted that changes in the percentage of Americans seeking jobs “should help push up the unemployment rate.” The memo, a “Mid-year review” from June 17, was written by Ethan Harris, the head of global economics research for the corporation’s investment banking arm, Bank of America Securities. Its specific aspiration: “By the end of next year, we hope the ratio of job openings to unemployed is down to the more normal highs of the last business cycle.”

    The Fall of Facebook
    https://ez.substack.com/p/the-fall-of-facebook
Yesterday, Mark Zuckerberg was flayed by the media for his grim fears around the current financial climate, including but not limited to telling employees that special “meta days” they got through the pandemic were done, and that some of them would be “self-selected” for firing. Meanwhile, Instagram is suffering from a problem where you see seemingly random videos from their algorithm instead of the people you’re friends with. Instagram head Adam Mosseri rushed to try and explain why this was happening - to be clear, the actual reason is “we want TiKTok’s money” - claiming that the platform will be “more video-focused over time,” as that’s what people are liking and sharing. To translate from Corpo-speak, Facebook/Meta/MakeMyNudesFight.Com is in a bind. After making billions of dollars making people so angry at each other that we now have entire political parties driven by conspiracy theories, it has become obvious that Mark Zuckerberg is neither an innovator nor an operator. I’ve said before that he was outright lying about what his company could do in the metaverse. Now, not only is Meta’s growth declining for the first time in history, but their metaverse/VR department Reality Labs lost $2.8 billion in one quarter.

As Lollapalooza Opens, Activists Threaten Federal Lawsuit Over Chicago's Youth Curfew
    https://blockclubchicago.org/2022/07/28/as-lollapalooza-opens-activists-threaten-federal-lawsuit-over-chicagos-youth-curfew/
Youth activists say they are prepared to sue the city to roll back its 10 p.m. youth curfew, calling it unconstitutional. The curfew unfairly targets Black and Brown youth and keeps them from Downtown while white residents and visitors get a pass, lawyers and organizers with GoodKids MadCity and the Brighton Park Neighborhood Council said at a Thursday news conference outside Lollapalooza. The curfew has been controversial for months — but Lollapalooza highlights its unfairness, organizers said. The festival started Thursday and runs through the weekend. Organizers and lawyers with the groups said the city curfew’s “Lollapalooza loophole” allows young people to bypass the 10 p.m. daily curfew if they are coming from a ticketed event. That provision benefits the wealthy, white suburban teens and tourists who flock to events like Lolla, while Black and Brown youth don’t get a similar pass, organizers have said. The curfew for youth was moved from 11 to 10 p.m. in May and expanded to include 17-year-olds. Separately, Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued an executive order in May banning unaccompanied minors younger than 16 from Millennium Park after 6 p.m. on weekends.

In a 3rd test, Facebook still fails to block hate speech
    https://apnews.com/article/technology-africa-kenya-7aaee9459ae58e1278b6075f9ed1392b
Facebook is letting violent hate speech slip through its controls in Kenya as it has in other countries, according to a new report from the nonprofit groups Global Witness and Foxglove. It is the third such test of Facebook's ability to detect hateful language — either via artificial intelligence or human moderators — that the groups have run, and that the company has failed.

Governor confirms 8 deaths in devastating Kentucky flooding
    https://www.nbc29.com/2022/07/28/least-4-dead-kentucky-flooding-hits-appalachia-officials-say/?fbclid=IwAR3M42zLkAiUO9eqAJAvuP-rQcYx-vF9TKIQuGeLtcVicRHnmz0QQAd3pNc
The death toll continues to rise in connection with the devastating flooding in eastern Kentucky. Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed to WKYT that there are eight deaths. WKYT reports two deaths were in Perry County, one in Knott County, and one in Clay County. WKYT hasn’t yet confirmed the locations of the other four deaths. Beshear said there are a number of people who are also unaccounted for. He expects the death toll to reach double digits. Beshear has declared a state of emergency for the communities impacted and activated the National Guard. The governor said 30 people have been airlifted out of flooded areas so far, and that number is growing. Beshear called it one of the “worst and most devastating flooding events” in the state’s history, saying hundreds of homes had been damaged or destroyed so far, per WKYT. “The situation is dynamic and ongoing,” Beshear said. “In most places, we are not seeing receding water. In fact, in most places, it is not crested yet.” In Knott County, the coroner confirmed two deaths in the region with multiple people still missing, WSAZ reported. “Hundreds will lose their homes, and this is going to be yet another event that it’s going to take not months but likely years for many families to rebuild and recover from,” the governor said.

Hidden Menace: Massive methane leaks speed up climate change
    https://apnews.com/article/science-texas-trending-news-climate-and-environment-0eb6880f7c4532a845155a3bd44c2e4b
To the naked eye, the Mako Compressor Station outside the dusty West Texas crossroads of Lenorah appears unremarkable, similar to tens of thousands of oil and gas operations scattered throughout the oil-rich Permian Basin. What’s not visible through the chain-link fence is the plume of invisible gas, primarily methane, billowing from the gleaming white storage tanks up into the cloudless blue sky. The Mako station, owned by a subsidiary of West Texas Gas Inc., was observed releasing an estimated 870 kilograms of methane – an extraordinarily potent greenhouse gas — into the atmosphere each hour. That’s the equivalent impact on the climate of burning seven tanker trucks full of gasoline every day. But Mako’s outsized emissions aren’t illegal, or even regulated. And it was only one of 533 methane “super emitters” detected during a 2021 aerial survey of the Permian conducted by Carbon Mapper, a partnership of university researchers and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Exclusive-Former Republicans and Democrats form new third U.S. political party
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/exclusive-former-republicans-democrats-form-223654665.html
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Dozens of former Republican and Democratic officials announced on Wednesday a new national political third party to appeal to millions of voters they say are dismayed with what they see as America's dysfunctional two-party system. The new party, called Forward and whose creation was first reported by Reuters, will initially be co-chaired by former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and Christine Todd Whitman, the former Republican governor of New Jersey. The new party is being formed by a merger of three political groups that have emerged in recent years as a reaction to America's increasingly polarized and gridlocked political system.
