The Washington Post’s lead “Fact Checker” columnist did not accurately recount public officials' statement when he tried to discredit reporting about a 10-year-old rape victim, according to emails obtained by The Lever. Last month, the Post’s Glenn Kessler, who has led the paper’s Fact Checker column since 2011, wrote a widely-shared column questioning the sourcing behind a viral news story about an Ohio child who traveled to Indiana for an abortion after being raped. The column was amplified by conservative media outlets as alleged proof that progressives were exaggerating the effects of the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Days later, a man was arrested for committing the crime — further substantiating the original reporting and debunking Kessler’s column. The arrest was made after Franklin County Children Services in Columbus, Ohio, referred the matter to the police. Kessler’s Fact Checker column originally claimed that none of the county officials he contacted “were aware of such a case in their areas.” He hastily updated his column to say, “Unlike similar Ohio county agencies we contacted, Franklin County officials did not offer a response." Neither of these statements were accurate: Emails obtained by The Lever through an open records request indicate that Franklin County Children Services responded to Kessler’s outreach promptly, and informed Kessler that their agency could not comment on specific cases, because this information is treated as confidential under Ohio law.

Even before the flood, parts of Eastern Kentucky looked like what they call natural disaster, all the time, every day. Last week I gave a ride to a guy named Chris who’d been helping out with flood relief in the town of Neon. Chris lived about two miles down the road from Neon, next to an abandoned carburetor shop that was now wrecked by floodwaters. His house had miraculously escaped destruction. But the trailer homes at the bottom of the hill were all gone. In their place sat a solitary shed, mostly intact and settled comfortably into the mud like it now owned the place. Two miles, and the thing was still intact? After all, there was a large bridge between where it once sat and where it now sat—so how did it clear that bridge without taking any damage? We had all kinds of ridiculous theories. Maybe it had gotten sucked under the bridge and popped back out the other side? Maybe the owner had moved it the week before the flood? Eventually we landed on the most obvious explanation, the one we’d been trying to avoid: the floodwaters had simply drowned the bridge itself, briefly transforming it from an active piece of infrastructure to a deep-sea relic. Once we got to that point, we sort of had to stop and sit in silence. Before, the truth had been too grim to accept; now, it seemed perfectly logical.

DeSantis based the suspension on Warren’s statements that his office would not prosecute abortion-related cases and cases involving anti-transgender laws. DeSantis also mentioned Warren’s policies establishing a presumption against prosecuting certain behaviors. DeSantis claimed that with those statements and policies Warren “neglected” his duties and “display[ed] a lack of competence” to carry out his duties. DeSantis replaced Warren with Susan Lopez, a local judge who is a member of the conservative legal organization the Federalist Society. His decision effectively kicked the Democratic Party out of an office it won in both 2016 and 2020, in a county that DeSantis himself lost by nine percentage points in 2018.

All the VFX workers in this story are referred to by pseudonyms due to the relatively small size of the industry, and because they’re afraid of being blacklisted. io9 also made numerous requests to Marvel for comment, but as of publication time, they had not responded. According to the police report, Vermont State Police were notified of a burglary complaint from a residence in Stamford at 5:55 p.m. on May 1. Police found that several bottles of alcohol were taken from the residence while the homeowners were not present. After collecting statements and looking at surveillance videos, police found probable cause to charge Miller with felony burglary into an unoccupied dwelling.

Anne Heche has remained in critical condition since crashing her vehicle into a Los Angeles residence on Friday, according to a new representative for the actress. "Over the weekend a representative stated that Anne was in stable condition but that information was inaccurate. She has always remained in critical condition, slipping into a coma following the accident," a spokesperson for Heche told CNN in a statement Monday. "She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention. She is currently being treated at the Grossman Burn Center." Earlier Monday, CNN reported that Heche is under investigation for misdemeanor DUI and hit and run, according to LAPD Officer Annie Hernandez.

It is a converted mill, and the garden is long, narrow and exuberant, with water on both sides. To the south is the millrace that once drove the stones that ground the corn; to the north is the River Windrush, which runs through Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire on its way to join the Thames. Hammond, a retired professor specialising in machine learning, arrived here two decades ago, and delighted in the variety of wildlife he could see in his garden: voles, otters, deer, foxes, badgers, grass snakes, lizards, swans and ducks, as well as chub, barbel and grayling swimming among the long fronds of the water-crowfoot as it swayed over the gravel beds. Kingfishers perched in the willows. It was only in 2013, when he gained a new neighbour – a keen angler and retired detective superintendent called Ashley Smith – that he realised something was wrong with his Cotswolds paradise. “It took a fisherman’s eye to see it was so bad,” said Hammond, who has steel-grey hair and a determined jaw, as we walked through his garden recently. Every year the river had got worse, but so gradually that he hadn’t noticed it. “It’s like how you don’t notice yourself getting older, then a friend sees you and says: ‘My God, you’ve got old.’” Smith remembers the two of them leaning on the bridge rail and looking for fish swimming up to spawn in the gravel. That first year, he saw five barbel and two chub. By 2014, the chub had gone, and he saw just three barbel. And that was that. “I haven’t seen a fish since,” he told me. By now, anyone leaning on that rail wouldn’t see a fish even if it existed: the River Windrush is opaque, its once-clear water running khaki-grey. Where the gravel beds were golden, they are now mired in scum. It’s not just the fish that have vanished, so have the crowfoot plants. “We used to get swans breeding on the little island near our bridge, but they’re gone,” said Hammond. “There’s nothing for them to eat any more.”
