Man Tasked With Preserving Japan’s Heritage Drives Into the Country’s Oldest Toilet
    https://www.vice.com/en/article/93agb8/japan-kyoto-temple-oldest-toilet
Whether it’s forgetting to flush the toilet or to wash your hands after a particularly pungent one, we’ve all had bathroom accidents of some kind. But one Japanese man’s mishap has done far more damage than merely violating hygiene standards. The 30-year-old, whose job is to conserve Japan’s cultural heritage, accidentally rammed his car into the country’s oldest toilet on Monday and broke down its wooden door in the process.

Trump Accuses George H.W. Bush of Hiding Papers in a Bowling Alley
    https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/10/trump-thinks-bush-hid-documents-bowling-alley.html
During rallies in Nevada on Saturday and then in Arizona on Sunday, Trump said, per FactCheck.org, “George H.W. Bush took millions and millions of documents to a former bowling alley pieced together with what was then an old and broken Chinese restaurant, they put them together. And it had a broken front door and broken windows. Other than that it was quite secure. And there was no security.”

Trump Was Betrayed by His Diet Coke Valet
    https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/10/trump-betrayed-by-his-diet-coke-valet-walt-nauta.html
The Washington Post reports that his former White House valet — the man who had to respond every time the president pressed his famous Oval Office Diet Coke button — provided key evidence that led to the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago in August. Nauta followed Trump to Mar-a-Lago at the end of his term, and campaign-finance records show he was on the payroll of Trump’s Save America PAC, making about $135,000 a year. It seems Trump’s trust wasn’t entirely misplaced; the Post reports that Nauta resisted betraying his boss at first but eventually changed his story: When FBI agents first interviewed Nauta, he denied any role in moving boxes or sensitive documents, the people familiar with the situation said in interviews before Nauta’s name became public. But as investigators gathered more evidence, they questioned him a second time and he told a starkly different story — that Trump instructed him to move the boxes, these people said.

An accident at SpaceX | Semafor
    https://www.semafor.com/article/10/18/2022/space-x-technician-accident
The technicians in the private space industry, responsible for building and repairing rockets, receive little recognition — even when they sacrifice their lives for the mission. Francisco Cabada was conducting a routine pressure valve test on SpaceX’s raptor engine in the afternoon of January 18 when something went wrong. Cabada, a ten-year veteran at the company, shouldn’t have been near the valve when it hit maximum pressure, according to people with knowledge of the accident, but it ramped up faster than expected, blowing a shield off the valve and knocking him unconscious. The injuries were extensive, affecting his head, upper and lower extremities and his respiratory system, according to California’s Department of Industrial Relations. Cabada, a father of three from South Central Los Angeles, was taken to a hospital to be treated for a skull fracture and head trauma, according to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. He remained in a coma for months. SpaceX was fined $18,475 by OSHA for two safety violations, one of which was rated the highest penalty level of “serious” and a maximum gravity of 10. The OSHA case is still open.

‘I was ready to throw the tape away’: how we made What a Fool Believes by the Doobie Brothers
    https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2022/oct/17/how-we-made-what-a-fool-believes-doobie-brothers
Kenny Loggins and I had been chatting about getting together to write some songs. He came over to my house in LA just as I was playing what I had for What a Fool Believes. He said: “You were just playing something at the piano. Is that new? That’s what I want to work on first.” He had already come up with the song’s hook line – “She had a place in his life” – before he’d got through the door.

‘Watchmen’ Creator Alan Moore Disowned HBO’s ‘Watchmen,’ Told Showrunner Never to Contact Him: ‘This Is Embarrassing to Me’
    https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/alan-moore-disowned-hbo-watchmen-told-showrunner-dont-contact-me-1235407266/
“Watchmen” creator Alan Moore revealed to GQ magazine that he disowned HBO’s Emmy-winning adaptation of his graphic novel and told the showrunner never to contact him. Moore did not cite the showrunner by name, although Damon Lindelof served in the role. According to Moore, the showrunner sent him a letter during the HBO show’s development and wrote, “Dear Mr. Moore, I am one of the bastards currently destroying ‘Watchmen.’” “That wasn’t the best opener,” Moore said of the showrunner letter. “It went on through a lot of, what seemed to me to be, neurotic rambling. ‘Can you at least tell us how to pronounce “Ozymandias”? I got back with a very abrupt and probably hostile reply telling him that I’d thought that Warner Bros. were aware that they, nor any of their employees, shouldn’t contact me again for any reason.” Moore continued, “I explained that I had disowned the work in question, and partly that was because the film industry and the comics industry seemed to have created things that had nothing to do with my work, but which would be associated with it in the public mind. I said, ‘Look, this is embarrassing to me. I don’t want anything to do with you or your show. Please don’t bother me again.'”

The Smash and Grab of Kroger-Albertsons
    https://mattstoller.substack.com/p/the-smash-and-grab-of-kroger-albertsons
The Kroger-Albertsons supermarket deal is uglier than you might expect. The "special cash division" of $4 billion may be intended to get around antitrust enforcers. Today I’m writing about a the merger of two supermarket giants, Kroger-Albertsons, with a focus on a weird wrinkle wrought by the private equity investors who are pushing for the deal. Last week, supermarket chain Kroger announced it would be buying Albertsons for $24 billion, in the largest grocery acquisition in U.S. history. Kroger and Albertsons are both monsters, and the two of them combining would create the second largest chain in the country, after Walmart, with 15% of the national grocery business. Kroger/Albertsons would employ over 700,000 people, have over $200 billion in revenue and more than 40,000 private label brands, and own and operate brands such as Safeway, Ralphs, Smith’s, Harris Teeter, Dillons, Fred Meyer, Vons, Kings, Haggen, Tom Thumb, Star Market, Jewel-Osco, and Shaw’s. There’s been a lot of good analysis of this deal already, so I want to focus on something a little unusual. The merging parties and their investors know that enforcers will challenge the deal. I mean, Albertsons will get $600 million from Kroger if the government blocks the deal, which is a reasonably sized break-up fee. This merger is no slam dunk, to put it mildly. What I find weird is that, in just a few weeks, and long before any merger trial, Albertsons will hand up to $4 billion to its private equity investors Apollo Capital and Cerberus Capital Management, in a special dividend. That’s the cash and working capital necessary to keep a supermarket chain functional, gone, to the private equity investors, even if the merger falls through. And that’s worrisome.
