Sacheen Littlefeather was a Native icon. Her sisters say she was an ethnic fraud
    https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/Sacheen-Littlefeather-oscar-Native-pretendian-17520648.php
In one of her final interviews, Littlefeather told The Chronicle that she took the stage at the Oscars because “I spoke my heart, not for me, myself, as an Indian woman but for we and us, for all Indian people … I had to speak the truth. Whether or not it was accepted, it had to be spoken on behalf of Native people.” But Littlefeather didn’t tell the truth that night. That’s because, according to her biological sisters, Rosalind Cruz and Trudy Orlandi, Littlefeather isn’t Native at all. “It’s a lie,” Orlandi told me in an exclusive interview. “My father was who he was. His family came from Mexico. And my dad was born in Oxnard.” “It is a fraud,” Cruz agreed. “It’s disgusting to the heritage of the tribal people. And it’s just … insulting to my parents.” Littlefeather’s sisters both said in separate interviews that they have no known Native American/American Indian ancestry. They identified as “Spanish” on their father’s side and insisted their family had no claims to a tribal identity.

New documentary about Wilmington's 1898 massacre points to involvement by U.S. military
    https://www.starnewsonline.com/story/news/history/2022/10/09/mckinleys-guns-doc-film-points-to-u-s-military-involvement-in-1898/69528378007/
Kent Chatfield is nothing if not determined. For 19 years, the longtime local resident has researched Wilmington's 1898 coup and massacre, digging through archives and chasing down documents. Now, "McKinley's Guns," the first in a series of four planned film documentaries about the coup, its planning and its long-term effect on Wilmington, is ready for a public screening. The hour-long film actually premiered at Thalian Hall on Sept. 29, but Hurricane Ian washed out two planned screenings for Sept. 30. The final public screening of "McKinley's Guns" is 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Thalian Hall. In the film, Chatfield argues that the white supremacist coup, which left dozens of Blacks dead and is the only instance in U.S. history of the violent overthrow of a local government, had involvement from military officers and U.S. government officials at a higher level than has previously been revealed. "This wasn't just a mob," said Jared Smith, one of the film's researchers, at a private screening of the film on Oct. 2. That's not to say that "the bar owners and shop owners weren't involved," he added, but they weren't the ones driving the violence.

American Zoetrope Gothic: Roman Coppola on the Practical Effects of Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Roman Coppola: I am very proud of the movie; it's fun to see that it's endured. And I do think that the way we approached the effects, with more classic techniques, gave it a certain longevity.

Life Moves Pretty Fast: Why Gen-X “Got it” Before the Rest of You
    https://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/life-moves-pretty-fast-why-gen-x-got-it-before-the-rest-of-you-kpkn/
Look, we have heard all the jokes. We know how you talk about us. And now you are saying there might never be a Gen-X President (as if Donald Trump did some sort of credit to his generation in that role). The thing is, WE DON’T CARE. You know this about us. Because we get it, and you likely don’t.

Migrant survivors of West Texas shooting detained by ICE
    https://apnews.com/article/us-immigration-and-customs-enforcement-united-states-texas-government-politics-crime-c0de588f93c1cdd073ad51a12f22bd01
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — One migrant is dead, another is wounded and at least seven others are languishing in detention three weeks after twin brothers allegedly opened fire on them in the Texas desert, claiming they mistook them for wild hogs during a hunting trip. Yet, the accused shooters, 60-year-old brothers Michael and Mark Sheppard, who both worked in local law enforcement, were initially released on half a million dollars bail after being jailed briefly on manslaughter charges. The case has caused outrage among advocates for the victims and survivors, who say their detention violates a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement directive that calls for giving strong consideration to the fact that they were crime victims who cooperated with authorities in determining whether they should be released. “This is a hate crime that occurred immediately after they were crossing into the United States,” said Zoe Bowman, the supervising attorney at Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, who is representing the seven detained survivors. Michael Sheppard, who was a warden at the troubled West Texas Detention Facility where he was accused of abuse, and his brother, Mark, who worked for the Hudspeth County sheriff’s office, were recently again taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the Sept. 27 shooting. The sheriff’s office did not say where they were being held or why they were initially released on bond. The case is being investigated by the Texas Rangers, an arm of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

    Why G4 failed
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2022/10/21/g4-shutdown-froskurinn-comcast-twitch/
G4, the video game television and online network backed by Comcast abruptly closed on Oct. 16. In a memo to staff published by Deadline, Comcast Spectacor CEO Dave Scott wrote of lower viewership and that G4 had “not achieved sustainable financial results” before relaying the decision to discontinue G4’s operations. As sudden as the end game was, it didn’t surprise a number of now-former G4 employees, who believed the venture’s end had been nigh for months. In interviews with The Washington Post, 11 former G4 staffers described their experiences at the network leading up to its recent closure. Speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the signing of nondisclosure agreements, they described a work environment with ever-shifting priorities from leadership that never settled on a strategy to develop their audience. That same leadership was sometimes absent from day-to-day operations, according to the workers interviewed, who felt they often leaned on the G4 name and other nostalgic show brands and struggled to reconcile the differences between broadcasting on linear television compared to online platforms like YouTube and Twitch. [The president, Tucker Roberts, son of billionaire Comcast CEO Brian Roberts,] rarely appeared at G4′s Los Angeles studio, according to employees who worked at the office from the time of G4′s launch (barring an interruption during the omicron outbreak). In the Los Angeles studio, Roberts had a conference room-sized office based on Emperor Palpatine’s throne room from “Star Wars,” complete with Imperial iconography that meant camera crews were unable to film near it for fear of incurring rights violations, according to multiple former employees. “He had the largest office space, and he never even moved in,” said a former employee.

Newsmax Bans Lara Logan for Going Full QAnon on Network
    https://www.thedailybeast.com/lara-logan-goes-full-qanon-spews-blood-libel-on-newsmax
Nearly a year after she was kicked to the curb by Fox News for essentially calling Dr. Anthony Fauci a Nazi, Lara Logan was on Newsmax’s primetime airwaves pushing QAnon tropes, invoking blood libel, and fear-mongering about a “global cabal” planning to “dilute the pool of patriots” in the United States with “100 million illegal immigrants.” Following the publication of this article, Newsmax told The Daily Beast that it will not be bringing her back on the air going forward. “Newsmax condemns in the strongest terms the reprehensible statements made by Lara Logan and her views do not reflect our network,” the network said in a statement. “We have no plans to interview her again.” Logan, a one-time award-winning reporter for CBS News, has embraced baseless conspiracy theories in an apparent effort to remake herself as a far-right pundit. Her increasingly unhinged rhetoric, though, eventually resulted in Fox News distancing itself from her and the loss of her series on the network’s streaming service.

TikTok Parent ByteDance Planned To Use TikTok To Monitor The Physical Location Of Specific American Citizens
    https://www.forbes.com/sites/emilybaker-white/2022/10/20/tiktok-bytedance-surveillance-american-user-data/
A China-based team at TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, planned to use the TikTok app to monitor the personal location of some specific American citizens, according to materials reviewed by Forbes. The team behind the monitoring project — ByteDance’s Internal Audit and Risk Control department — is led by Beijing-based executive Song Ye, who reports to ByteDance cofounder and CEO Rubo Liang. The team primarily conducts investigations into potential misconduct by current and former ByteDance employees. But in at least two cases, the Internal Audit team also planned to collect TikTok data about the location of a U.S. citizen who had never had an employment relationship with the company, the materials show. It is unclear from the materials whether data about these Americans was actually collected; however, the plan was for a Beijing-based ByteDance team to obtain location data from U.S. users’ devices. TikTok spokesperson Maureen Shanahan said that TikTok collects approximate location information based on users’ IP addresses to “among other things, help show relevant content and ads to users, comply with applicable laws, and detect and prevent fraud and inauthentic behavior." But the material reviewed by Forbes indicates that ByteDance's Internal Audit team was planning to use this location information to surveil individual American citizens, not to target ads or any of these other purposes. Forbes is not disclosing the nature and purpose of the planned surveillance referenced in the materials in order to protect sources. TikTok and ByteDance did not answer questions about whether Internal Audit has specifically targeted any members of the U.S. government, activists, public figures or journalists.
