Videos show Turkey's Erdogan boasted letting builders avoid earthquake codes
    https://www.npr.org/2023/02/13/1156512284/turkey-earthquake-erdogan-building-safety
As Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan struggles to defend his response to last Monday's devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake, videos from a few years back have emerged showing him hailing some of the housing projects that crumbled, killing thousands of people. Critics say contractors were allowed to skip crucial safety regulations, increasing their profits but putting residents at risk. The videos have fueled public outrage over slow efforts to help residents in the aftermath of the massive earthquake — the world's deadliest in over a decade — that killed more than 35,000 people in Turkey and neighboring Syria, and left many injured and without a home, food or heating in the middle of winter. In one video, taken during a campaign stop ahead of Turkey's March 2019 local elections, Erdogan listed some of his government's top achievements — including new housing for the city of Kahramanmaras, also known as Maras, near the epicenter of last week's quake. "We solved the problem of 144,156 citizens of Maras with zoning amnesty," Erdogan said, using his term for the construction amnesties handed out to allow contractors to ignore the safety codes that had been put on the books specifically to make apartment blocks, houses and office buildings more resistant to earthquakes. Engineers and architects say the lack of safety features designed to absorb the shock of earthquakes likely contributed to the soaring death toll.

Mars Wrigley factory fined after two workers fall into chocolate vat
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64620418
The Mars Wrigley factory in the city of Elizabethtown was fined more than $14,500 (£12,000) by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The workers were contractors who did not work full-time for the factory. The incident happened in June 2022. A hole had to be cut into the bottom of the partly-full tank to get them out. More than two dozen rescuers responded, and one worker was transported to hospital by helicopter, according to local reports. The regulator's report labelled the incident "serious". It says the workers were hired to clean tanks, and were not provided with proper safety training. It noted that the workers fell into a batching tank - a tank used to mix ingredients - for Dove chocolate, a brand sold in the US. In the UK and elsewhere, Dove is sold as Galaxy.

From 25 miles away, an inky plume of smoke and its purple tail diffused over the eastern horizon. Closer to the blaze, smoke roiled and towered behind the tree line and a shopping center. It painted the sky over a subdivision. Its reflection floated on the Neuse River. Within a few hundred yards, flames licked ...

Investigation reveals high overhead costs for fertilizer plant fire relief project, raising questions about city oversight
    https://www.wfdd.org/story/investigation-reveals-high-overhead-costs-fertilizer-plant-fire-relief-project-raising
When the smoke finally cleared from the Weaver Fertilizer Plant fire last winter, Winston-Salem officials turned their attention to helping those who were forced to pack their bags and head to safer ground. More than 6,500 people were under evacuation orders, many of whom lived in low-income neighborhoods. So a relief fund was established to reimburse residents for expenses related to the crisis: food, shelter, lost wages – whatever was needed to get their lives back on track. The city tapped nonprofit Experiment in Self-Reliance (ESR), without a bid process, to manage the fund and hoped that the million dollars earmarked would be enough. But one year later, a WFDD investigation has revealed that only $241,000 was distributed to just 656 residents. And ESR was paid $100,000 to do it.

On Tuesday, Andreessen Horowitz, which is one of Neumann’s backers, released a video from a November conference panel where the WeWork founder shared a few details about Flow, which he said would create “an elevated experience for the resident.” Neumann explained that his new startup would make renters “feel ownership” over their apartments, though he admitted that “the word ‘ownership’ is a very complicated word.”

Why some men in the trades are dying of opioid overdoses
    https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6734856
Workers say isolation, lifestyle and physicality of the job pushes some to drug use. Three out of four people who die of overdoses in Alberta are men, according to provincial statistics. In 2017, the province reviewed all opioid-related deaths and found that of those with occupations listed, 53 per cent had employment in trades, transport or equipment operation. A Health Canada campaign, which drew data from provincial reports in Alberta, B.C. and Ontario also indicates that about 30 to 50 per cent of those employed at the time of their death, were employed in trades.
