The Paja Formation: An ecosystem of monsters
    https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/03/the-paja-formation-an-ecosystem-of-monsters/
Roughly 130 million years ago, in an area within what is now central Colombia, the ocean was filled with a diversity of species unseen today. Within that water swam several massive apex predators that are the stuff of nightmares. These marine reptiles could reach lengths of 2 to 10 meters (about 6 to 32 feet), some with enormous mouths filled with teeth, others with relatively small heads (also filled with teeth) attached to long, snake-like necks.

An Interview With the School Board Chair Who Forced Out a Principal After Michelangelo’s David Was Shown in Class
    https://slate.com/human-interest/2023/03/florida-principal-fired-michelangelo-david-statue.html
On Thursday, the Tallahassee Democrat reported that the principal of a local charter school, the Tallahassee Classical School, was forced to resign after three parents complained about an art teacher showing a picture of Michelangelo’s 16th-century sculpture of David. “Parental rights are supreme, and that means protecting the interests of all parents, whether it’s one, 10, 20 or 50,” the chair of the school’s board, Barney Bishop III, told the paper. To figure out exactly how this happened, I called Bishop, who is also, according to his biography, a consultant, a lobbyist, an “outspoken advocate for the free enterprise system,” and an Eagle Scout. Our conversation has been edited for clarity.

Iconic drag queen Darcelle dies at 92
    https://www.koin.com/news/portland/drag-performer-darcelle-walter-cole-dies-at-92/
Walter Cole, the man behind the iconic drag queen Darcelle, has passed away from natural causes at age 92, his family confirms. Life rarely turns out the way it was planned. When the 1960s rolled around, Walter Cole was living a fairly ordinary American life. He had served his country through the Korean War. He was married with two children. He had a modest home in Southeast Portland. He worked at Fred Meyer. But, for the man who would go from fairly ordinary to extraordinary and a world-famous performer, something was missing. Something was different.

U.S. and Canada Reach an Agreement on Diverting Asylum Seekers
    https://nyti.ms/3nijJPW
WASHINGTON — The United States and Canada have reached an agreement that will allow both countries to divert asylum seekers from their borders at a time when migration has surged across the hemisphere, a U.S. official familiar with the agreement said Thursday. The deal, which is set to be announced Friday by President Biden and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after the two leaders meet in Ottawa, will allow Canada to turn back immigrants at Roxham Road, a popular unofficial crossing point from New York for migrants seeking asylum in Canada. In exchange, Canada has agreed to provide a new, legal refugee program for 15,000 migrants who are fleeing violence, persecution and economic devastation in South and Central America, the official said, lessening the pressure of illegal crossings into the United States from Mexico. Mr. Biden was due to arrive in Ottawa on Thursday evening for a 24-hour visit meant to underscore the unity of purpose between the United States and Canada after four years of frosty and even openly hostile exchanges between Mr. Trudeau and former President Donald J. Trump.

Nigerian politician, wife, and a doctor guilty of organ trafficking to UK
    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/mar/23/nigerian-politician-wife-doctor-guilty-organ-trafficking-uk-ike-ekweremadu
A senior Nigerian politician, his wife, and a doctor have been convicted of organ trafficking, in the first verdict of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act. Ike Ekweremadu, 60, a former deputy president of the Nigerian senate, his wife, Beatrice, 56, and Dr Obinna Obeta, 51, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey. They criminally conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney, the jury found. The prosecutor Hugh Davies KC told the court the Ekweremadus and Obeta had treated the man and other potential donors as “disposable assets – spare parts for reward”. He said they entered an “emotionally cold commercial transaction” with the man. The behaviour of Ekweremadu, a successful lawyer and founder of an anti-poverty charity who helped draw up Nigeria’s laws against organ trafficking, showed “entitlement, dishonesty and hypocrisy”, Davies told the jury.

Biden And Becerra Let Big Pharma Profiteer Off Cancer Drug
    https://www.levernews.com/biden-and-becerra-let-big-pharma-profiteer-off-cancer-drug/
In the summer of 2020, then-California Attorney General Xavier Becerra demanded the Trump administration use existing law to lower the price of medicines that were originally developed at taxpayer expense. “We cannot afford to leave the supply of this critical medication to chance and the whims of the marketplace when it was funded in part by taxpayer dollars,” Becerra wrote in a letter to the Trump administration in response to the high price of Remdesivir, which treats COVID-19. Less than three years later, the agency run by Becerra — now Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary in the Biden administration — just rejected the same demand from two cancer patients unable to afford the $180,000-a-year price of a medicine whose development was originally funded by the public..

Accusations of racial bias dog prosecutor in Ronald Greene case
    https://apnews.com/article/police-brutality-racial-injustice-louisiana-ronald-greene-0c6ae256b39ce49fe4ec14a85939808c
FARMERVILLE, La. (AP) — In this conservative corner of northern Louisiana, where reverence for law enforcement runs deep and Blue Lives Matter flags often fly alongside the Stars and Stripes, the case of five white officers charged in the deadly 2019 arrest of Black motorist Ronald Greene is seen as anything but a slam dunk. So even with explosive body-camera video showing officers stunning, beating and dragging Greene, the Black district attorney in mostly white Union Parish has decided to bring in a hired gun: an experienced white special prosecutor with a folksy law-and-order bravado and a three-decades-long reputation for winning complicated cases across the state. But Hugo Holland’s background is also marked by accusations of racial bias, including new claims uncovered by The Associated Press, that make him an unlikely advocate for racial justice. In fact, he says the concept has no place in the Greene case or anywhere in the justice system. Holland drew criticism as a local prosecutor for displaying a portrait in his office of Confederate general and early KKK leader Nathan Bedford Forrest. He once sent a fellow lawyer an email joking about chasing down “a Black guy or a Mex-can.” And he wrote the judge in the 2021 Kyle Rittenhouse murder trial to say he would never have charged the teen acquitted of killing two people during unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, calling it a “good shoot.”

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/mar/05/daniel-duggan-says-he-faces-gross-injustice-if-extradited-to-us-in-speech-from-sydney-prison
Duggan, a former US marine pilot now naturalised Australian, was arrested last October at the request of the US government, which is seeking his extradition on charges of arms trafficking and money laundering, arising from his alleged training of Chinese fighter pilots, more than a decade ago. The allegations have not been tested in court.

Nebraska hasn't passed a single bill this year because one lawmaker keeps filibustering in protest of an anti-trans bill: 'I will burn this session to the ground'
    https://www.businessinsider.com/nebraska-hasnt-passed-a-bill-this-year-mega-filibuster-2023-3
A Nebraska state lawmaker has embarked on a series of filibusters in protest of an anti-transgender law conservative lawmakers are aiming to pass, stalling all bills in the current legislative session. Democratic state Senator Machaela Cavanaugh has filibustered every bill since the start of 2023, signaling her opposition to a bill that would ban gender-affirming surgery for transgender youth under the age of 19 that is on the legislative agenda, according to The Washington Post. The Nebraska state legislature is on track to debate just 30 of the 820 bills that were introduced this session, and Cavanaugh — the first Nebraska state senator to adopt the blanket filibuster strategy — is showing no sign of folding, per the Post. "This bill legislates hate and targets trans youth," Cavanaugh told The Post. The bill, LB574, would bar puberty blockers, gender-affirming surgeries, and hormone therapy for young people. In Nebraska's 49-member Unicameral legislature, 33 votes are necessary to end a filibuster. So far, there have not been enough supporters. "I will burn this session to the ground over this bill," Cavanaugh told her colleagues in a February session, according to the Post. "I have nothing but time, and I am going to use all of it." Cavanaugh's protest filibuster is also blocking five other anti-trans bills, as well as a bill that would ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, but she said that her priority is LB574.
