Norwegian company says TikTok data centre is limiting energy for manufacturing Ukraine ammunition
    https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/mar/28/energy-hungry-tiktok-data-centre-ukraine-ammunition-production-nammo-norway
One of Europe’s largest ammunition manufacturers has said efforts to meet surging demand from the war in Ukraine have been stymied by a new TikTok data centre that is monopolising electricity in the region close to its biggest factory. The chief executive of Nammo, which is co-owned by the Norwegian government, said a planned expansion of its largest factory in central Norway hit a roadblock due to a lack of surplus energy, with the construction of TikTok’s new data centre using up electricity in the local area. “We are concerned because we see our future growth is challenged by the storage of cat videos,” Morten Brandtzæg told the Financial Times.

I live near the East Palestine chemical spill. Officials who say we’re safe are lying
    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/mar/27/ohio-train-derailment-chemicals-health
On the evening of 3 February I was at home in East Palestine, Ohio, watching a movie with my granddaughters, when my daughter Adyson called and asked, “Dad, what’s going on downtown?” I looked out the window and there was an orange glow in the sky. I turned the movie down to talk to my daughter but she’d hung up. Ten minutes later she called back and said, “We’re coming to get you.” On 8 February, authorities lifted the evacuation order. The EPA said its testing showed that the air and water were safe. We didn’t trust that assessment. Part of my family went to a relative’s house in West Virginia. Each time I’ve gone to East Palestine to check on my house my headaches start again. It’s now been six weeks since the wreck. I dread night-time because when I lie down to sleep the constant coughing starts. My wife of 35 years woke me up recently because my breathing was so bad; she said I sounded like I had fluid in my lungs. Other people are having similar experiences. The ER doctors say it is chemical bronchitis. I’ve lost 15 pounds due to stress and anxiety. In addition to all the unexpected expenses, I’m paying for a home that I don’t live in and I don’t know yet whether insurance will help. They’ve been saying that they don’t cover “chemical spills”. Other people are even less lucky – they can’t afford to leave. Our friend’s son keeps having nosebleeds.

Elon Musk Says Twitter's "For You" Page Will Only Recommend Verified Accounts
    https://hypebeast.com/2023/3/elon-musk-twitter-for-you-page-only-recommend-verified-accounts-begins-april-launch
Elon Musk is announcing yet another update with Twitter, this time, continuing to double down on catering the social platform towards verified accounts. In a Tweet to his followers, Musk confirms that users will now need a “verified account” in order to appear on Twitter’s “For You” page. The update will begin on April 15, coming after Twitter announced it would start dismantling its “legacy” verification system. More than ever, it appears that only companies, government entities or Twitter Blue subscribers can be recommended to those that do not follow the account. He says in this Tweet that this “is the only realistic way to address advanced AI bot swarms taking over.” Musk also confirms that verified accounts will only be able to vote in polls for the “same reason.” While Musk did announce the change on Twitter, users can take his news with a grain of salt, seeing that it is not often that his statements turn into enforced policies of features. For instance, back in February, he promised that the company will begin sharing its ad revenues with Blue subscribers, however, nothing has come out of it just yet. He also made a similar promise to open-source the company’s algorithm by March 5, but has now said it has pushed back to March 31.

Troubled U.S. organ transplant system targeted for overhaul
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2023/03/22/transplant-system-overhaul-unos/
The government announced plans Wednesday to overhaul the troubled U.S. organ transplant system, including breaking up the monopoly power of the nonprofit organization that has run it for the past 37 years. If successful, the proposal would leave little unaffected in the sprawling, multibillion-dollar network that sends kidneys, livers and other organs from deceased donors to severely ill recipients. That system has long been criticized as inadequate: Nearly 104,000 people are on waiting lists for organs, most of them kidneys; 22 people die each day awaiting transplants, with poor and minority patients generally faring worse than affluent and White people. Carole Johnson, administrator of the federal Health Resources and Services Administration, the agency responsible for the network, is proposing to break up responsibility for some of the functions performed by its nonprofit manager, the United Network for Organ Sharing. UNOS is the only entity ever to operate the U.S. transplant system. She said in an interview that she would invite other organizations to take over those areas. They would bid for separate contracts, creating the first competitive environment in the history of the transplant system.

    Miami's brutal crypto comedown
    https://www.businessinsider.com/miami-florida-stock-market-crash-crypto-bubble-parties-real-estate-2023-3
Gone are the nearly daily happy hours at beachfront bars where crypto guys in Crocs enthused about the newest coin. Traffic on Miami Beach's sexiest thoroughfare, Collins Avenue, is lighter. The home of the NBA's Miami Heat — which was hastily christened "FTX Arena" after the city signed a $135 million deal with the now collapsed cryptocurrency exchange — has already been renamed the "Miami-Dade Arena." And the gossip around town is that the repo man is coming for recently purchased Mercedes G Wagons — the unofficial status symbol of Miami's newly monied.
