Tennessee can build a new landfill or expand Middle Point. A better option is to repurpose trash.
    https://wpln.org/post/tennessee-can-build-a-new-landfill-or-expand-middle-point-a-better-option-is-to-repurpose-trash/
Humans have been digging holes to dump their trash for thousands of years. While the process became slightly more sophisticated in the 1970s, society hasn’t really transitioned to new ways to deal with trash. Tennessee is now running out of landfills, and communities are confronted with a choice: build more landfills or repurpose their trash. Grubhub and Lyft workers win separate court cases on employee status
    https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/grubhub-lyft-workers-win-separate-court-cases-17871624.php
A federal judge in San Francisco says a former driver for Grubhub was an employee — and not an independent contractor, as the company claimed — because he delivered food to Grubhub’s customers and did not operate his own business. His lawyer says it may be the first such ruling in the nation. Raef Lawson’s “work delivering food was within the usual course of Grubhub’s business of connecting restaurants with diners to facilitate food ordering,” U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley said in her ruling Thursday. She said Lawson “did not run his own business, communicate with customers through independent channels, or advertise in any way.” The ruling entitles Lawson, who worked for Grubhub in Los Angeles for four months in 2015 and 2016, to minimum wages for the hours he drove or was required to be available to pick up customers.

Homeowner says 'Find My iPhone' app mistake causing angry residents to come to his house: Ring video
    https://abc7chicago.com/find-my-iphone-ring-camera-surveillance-richmond-tx/13087117/
A homeowner in Texas said almost a dozen people keep knocking on his door at all hours of the day and night, claiming he stole their lost items because of what he said is a mistake on the "Find My iPhone" app. Scott Schuster, who has lived in his Richmond home since 2018, said this has been going on every few months over the last few years. He sent our sister station, ABC13, doorbell footage of the incidents. Schuster is not sure why the 'Find My iPhone' app is pinging his address either. He is a software engineer with his own theories, but he has no way of knowing for sure. He is adamant that this is a huge mistake and worries it could turn dangerous. He said he is just upset about the people showing up at his door because he has two young children, 7 and 9 years old, and worries for their safety. "There are plenty of irrational people if they are angry, drunk, had a rough night and lost their phone and thought it was stolen," Schuster said. "That's my biggest concern. Someone coming to the house potentially with a weapon." Schuster shared proof of him reaching out to Apple Support many times, as early as 2022. He called them, messaged them, and filed a formal report which is listed as closed. He said it has never been resolved, and another person came knocking just a few days ago.

“Money Is Not Speech”: Jayapal Files Constitutional Amendment to Reverse “Citizens United”
    https://truthout.org/articles/corporations-are-not-people-jayapal-files-bill-to-reverse-citizens-united/
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington) has introduced a bill that would end corporate personhood with the goal of reversing Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the infamous Supreme Court decision that has unleashed a flood of corporate “dark money” into the U.S. election system, threatening to undermine democracy altogether. The We the People Amendment, introduced in the House with 26 cosponsors, proposes a Constitutional Amendment that would establish that only people — not “artificial entities” like lobbying groups and corporations — have rights given by the Constitution. This would undercut the root of the Citizens United decision, in which Supreme Court justices ruled that limiting political spending from corporations constitutes a violation of the First Amendment right to free speech.

Want to Revitalize Downtown? Here’s Eight Ways How
    https://www.theurbanist.org/2023/04/04/want-to-revitalize-downtown-heres-eight-ways-how/
Cities like Seattle redesigned themselves with office commuters in mind. No longer designed around residents, downtowns became a central business district from nine to five, Monday through Friday. Downtown populations declined and cities relied on offices as the sole responsibility to support commerce, tax revenues, and transit ridership.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/liberal-judge-janet-protasiewicz-wins-decisive-wisconsin-supreme-court-seat/ar-AA19tF4T
Liberal Milwaukee Judge Janet Protasiewicz defeated former Justice Daniel Kelly on Tuesday night in a record-shattering election for a coveted seat on Wisconsin's Supreme Court. Her win wrangles control from conservatives who have been in power for 15 years and makes her the deciding vote on abortion rights, political maps, and perhaps even the 2024 presidential race.

Rep. Tricia Cotham is expected to announce her decision Wednesday. Roy McGrath is believed to have shot himself during traffic stop, document says
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/04/04/roy-mcgrath-manhunt-shooting/
Fugitive Roy C. McGrath, a former top aide to Maryland’s then governor, is believed to have shot himself following a traffic stop in Tennessee amid a 21-day manhunt that kicked off when he did not show up for court in his federal fraud trial, according to a law enforcement document. Fast, informative and written just for locals. Get The 7 DMV newsletter in your inbox every weekday morning. The FBI also fired during the stop, the document said, and it is unclear whether the self-inflicted wound or shots from law enforcement killed McGrath. McGrath, 53, had been a top aide to Larry Hogan when he was Maryland’s governor and became one of his top advisers. The Baltimore Sun broke the news that McGrath got a roughly quarter-million-dollar severance in 2020 when he left a quasi-public agency that he ran to become Hogan’s top aide. McGrath faced wire fraud and embezzlement charges related to alleged financial wrongdoings from when he was serving as the executive director of the Maryland Environmental Service (MES).

Immigration fraud case brings tough First Amendment questions to the Supreme Court
    https://www.npr.org/2023/03/27/1166343615/supreme-court-immigration-free-speech
Look at the the Supreme Court's history, and you will see a lot of cases in which odious defendants bring tough First Amendment questions. Monday's case was one of those. The issue was whether a federal law that makes it a crime to encourage or induce illegal immigration transforms some speech protected by the Constitution into a crime. The defendant in this case is Helaman Hansen, who conned 471 noncitizens into believing that they could obtain U.S. citizenship through adult adoption. By enrolling these noncitizens in this nonexistent program, Hansen defrauded these people of more than $1.8 million. In 2017, a jury convicted him on 15 counts of mail and wire fraud, for which he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. But it also found him guilty of two counts of encouraging or inducing these noncitizens to remain in the United States, and it is those two counts that were the focus of Monday's argument.
