Florida couple delivering Instacart groceries shot at after driving to wrong address
    https://www.wfla.com/news/florida/florida-couple-delivering-instacart-groceries-shot-at-after-driving-to-wrong-address/
A couple in Broward County said someone shot at them after they ended up at the wrong address while delivering groceries for Instacart. Waldes Thomas told NBC affiliate WTVJ that he was delivering for Instacart Saturday, and his girlfriend Diamond D’arville was with him. The couple said they were on the phone with the customer trying to find her house but ended up at a home on Southwest 178th Avenue. The couple said they saw a flashlight as they were about to drive off the property. “He’s like, ‘Who are you?’ and we’re saying we’re with Instacart,” D’arville told the news station. Things quickly took a terrible turn after the man got into his truck and pulled up behind the couple. “I had seen him pull out a gun and that’s when I said, ‘We got to go, we got to go,'” D’arville told WTVJ. “I was scared, I’m not going to lie.” D’arville said her car was hit several times. The couple said they decided to pull over about a block away from the home and called Davie police. “(A detective) asked if we wanted to prosecute and we agreed to do that, but he said since they didn’t break any laws or do anything unlawful, they couldn’t do anything because we were on their property,” D’arville told WTVJ.

Barry Humphries, Australian comedian and creator of Dame Edna Everage, dies aged 89
    https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2023/apr/22/barry-humphries-dies-australian-comedian-death-dead-dame-edna-everage-sir-les-patterson
Barry Humphries, the Australian comedian and actor best known for his creations Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, has died aged 89. In a seven-decade career spanning theatre, television, books and film, Humphries was famed for his absurdist, discomfiting and transgressive humour, poking fun at Australian culture with his cast of personas, some of which would rank among the best-loved comedic creations of all time: Dame Edna Everage, the gaudy, waspish housewife from Moonee Ponds; Sir Les Patterson, the vulgar and boozy Australian cultural attaché; the fundamentally decent and senile Sandy Stone; and archetypal Aussie bloke Barry McKenzie.

Why Does the Right-Wing Scion of a Failed European Dynasty Want to Tell Us How to Live?
    https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2023/04/eduard-habsburg-advice-book-twitter.html
In 2023 even Habsburgs are influencers. From the defeat of the Spanish Armada to the disastrous Battle of Rocroi, Hapsburgs absorbed loss after loss, while Protestant northern Europe extended itself across the world. (Check out our podcast, Hell on Earth, for more details!) By World War I, the European conflagration that brought down many of the continent’s remaining monarchies, the Habsburgs were just along for the ride. That brings us—somehow!—to Eduard Karl Joseph Michael Marcus Koloman Volkhold Maria Habsburg-Lothringen, aka Archduke Eduard of Austria. He’s a 56-year-old social media influencer who also has a make-work job as Hungary’s ambassador to the Holy See. His Twitter feed is filled with historical anecdotes about his family, the details of his day-to-day life as a diplomat, and lots of approachable, Gen X pop culture references. All of it is designed to make himself and his family appear relevant to a 21st-century audience. As part of his one-man Habsburg family charm offensive, he has now published a book: The Habsburg Way: Seven Rules for Turbulent Times.

Missouri trans ‘snitch form’ down after people spammed it with the ‘Bee Movie’ script
    https://techcrunch.com/2023/04/21/missouri-trans-snitch-form-down-after-people-spammed-it-with-the-bee-movie-script/
A Missouri government tip site for submitting complaints and concerns about gender-affirming care is down after people flooded it with fanfiction, rambling anecdotes and the “Bee Movie” script. The Missouri Attorney General’s office launched an online form for “Transgender Center Concerns” in late March, inviting those who’ve witnessed “troubling practices” at clinics that provide gender-affirming care to submit tips. The site didn’t ask users to name patients or healthcare providers, but encouraged users to complete the form “in as much detail as possible.” But after days of TikTok and Twitter users spamming the site with gibberish, the tip line has been removed from the Missouri government site entirely. Instead of the online form, the link to the tip line now says that the page no longer exists. Madeline Sieren, press secretary for Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, blamed “far left activists” for breaking the site. She said the tip line is down temporarily. “Rather than standing on their supposed science to back up their facts, they’re resorting to trying to hack our system to silence victims of the exact network we’re attempting to expose,” Sieren told TechCrunch in an email. “In order to ensure the integrity of a government website, the page is temporarily down while we investigate these matters.” Sieren did not clarify what the “hack” entailed.

Springfield man charged with demanding meat at gunpoint
    https://www.ozarksfirst.com/crime/springfield-man-charged-with-demanding-meat-at-gunpoint/
REPUBLIC, Mo. — On April 18, Republic Police Department officers were called to a Price Cutter to respond to a call about a robbery in which a man held an employee at gunpoint so that he would be served meat. Larry Gene Gay, 70, of Springfield, is charged with one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon and a felony count of armed criminal action. Court documents show that officers responded to the scene and ordered Gay to get out of his truck so they could arrest him. After he was taken into custody, an officer removed a loaded semi-automatic pistol with a bullet in the chamber from Gay’s hip holster. In an interview, Gay said he went to Price Cutter to buy steaks. He told the “good man” who was helping him that they needed to weigh the steaks. However, the meat department was closed. Gay said at that point, he showed his gun “Just to say I’m not stealing. I need you here to help me to get a couple of these steaks. I’m not going to hurt you.”

Brewery tapped to make Ultra Right beer backed out when they found out what it was
    https://www.dailydot.com/debug/bent-river-brewing-denies-making-ultra-right-beer/
A right-wing influencer appears to be having trouble finding a brewery willing to craft his anti-woke beer. The brew was launched in response to Bud Light offering a commemorative can to a transgender influencer. Conservatives practically foamed at the mouth over Bud Light giving trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney a can with her face on it. To express their outage, they’ve shot at the popular light lager, smashed it, and called for a boycott of the entire company. They quickly learned that boycotting Anheuser Busch is easier said than done, as the company brews many of the most popular beers in the country. Seth Weathers decided to solve their woke beer woes by selling a brew that doesn’t stand for LGBTQ equality in the slightest: Ultra Right 100% woke-free American beer. Weathers, who previously sold “Let’s Go Brandon” wrapping paper at Christmas, just needed a company to brew it. Given his asking price of $19.99 plus shipping for a six-pack, this should’ve been an easy task. (A six-pack of Bud Light costs roughly $8-$10 at most retail locations in the United States.) According to his viral YouTube ad for Ultra Right beer, Weathers wanted to sell a beer that didn’t “use our money to indoctrinate our children with their woke garbage.” It’s illegal for children to drink beer, though it is of course legal for them to see ads for alcoholic beverages. Weathers’ website said of his anti-trans rights beer, “If you know which restroom to use, you know what beer you should be drinking.” It bears mention that transgender people do know which restroom to use, conservatives just want to prohibit them from doing so. Weathers seems to have hit a snag finding a brewery. The company he was so convinced would sell his anti-woke beer that he put its name on his website reportedly backed out after it saw how he was marketing it. Mike Zoller, beer editor of PorchDrinking.com, first reported that Weathers attempted to tap Illinois-based Bent River Brewing Company to brew his anti-woke beer. Zoller also said that Bent River Brewing told him that Weathers used its name without permission. “We were initially approached to possibly contract a beer for a customer,” the company reportedly said. “Without our knowledge our name was listed on a website for a brief period of time. When we were made aware of the marketing for the product, we chose to pass on producing it.”

Russia's air force accidentally bombs own city of Belgorod
    https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-belgorod-bomb-4c806ca6765e018ffccef16c233013a7
Russia’s military has acknowledged that a bomb accidentally dropped by one of its warplanes caused a powerful blast in a Russian city about 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of the Russia-Ukraine border. Belgorod has faced regular drone attacks during Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. But the explosion late Thursday was far more powerful than anything Belgorod residents had experienced before. Russian commentators immediately floated theories about what weapon Ukraine had used for the attack. Many called for retribution. About an hour later, the Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged that a weapon accidentally released by one of its own Su-34 bombers caused the blast. Military experts said it likely was a powerful 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) bomb.

Botanist Stefano Mancuso: ‘You can anaesthetise all plants. This is extremely fascinating’
    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/apr/15/scientist-stefano-mancuso-you-can-anaesthetise-all-plants-this-is-extremely-fascinating-tree-stories
My approach to studying consciousness in plants was similar. I started by seeing if they were sensitive to anaesthetics and found that you can anaesthetise all plants by using the same anaesthetics that work in humans. This is extremely fascinating. We were thinking that consciousness was something related to the brain, but I think that both consciousness and intelligence are more embodied, relating to the entire body.

Peel police say $20M worth of gold, other goods stolen from Toronto Pearson Airport
    https://toronto.citynews.ca/2023/04/20/toronto-pearson-airport-gold-heist-robbery-security-incident-rcmp/
Peel Regional Police are investigating after $20 million worth of gold and other high-value items were stolen from a holding cargo facility at Toronto Pearson International Airport. Peel Regional Police Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn says a cargo container holding gold and other goods were stolen from Pearson Airport on Monday. “Once this cargo was offloaded at a holding facility, subsequent to its arrival, this high-value container was removed by illegal means,” said Duivesteyn. The Peel police airport division has been leading the investigation. “Our goal is to solve this theft,” said Duivesteyn. “We want to solve it. I cannot provide exact details… what I can say is we feel this to be an isolated incident. For the public worried about flying out, there should be no concern. We do not consider this a threat to public safety.”

Bed Bath & Beyond stiffed thousands of workers on severance pay | CNN Business
    https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/20/business/bed-bath-beyond-severance-pay-workers/index.html
Laid-off workers at previously shuttered stores received severance packages, and so Zaccagna assumed it would be the same for her store. The severance plan for full-time workers laid off in earlier rounds of Bed Bath & Beyond closures was one week of regular pay for each year of service, with a maximum of 10 weeks severance. For supervisors, the maximum was 12 weeks of severance pay. But Bed Bath & Beyond never paid severance to Zaccagna and her co-workers. The company also told employees it would not match annual contributions to their 401(k) retirement savings plans they paid into for all of 2022. “In the end, I’m heartbroken. I’m very disappointed in how they handled it,” she told CNN. “It was a punch in the gut.” She feels the company abandoned her and co-workers and that their years of loyalty meant nothing at the end.
